03:02:26 PM
Ok it’s working now
All right, so we're going to go ahead and get started. His I talk a lot and I want to keep his eyes here, too long. So we today. We're going to talk about are accelerated nursing program, which is designed for students who had a bachelors degree in another field and we're going to talk about the emissions timeline prerequisite courses. The requirement or also when addressed how to make your application a little bit more competitive will talk about the graduate specialties that we offer as well as the clinical the curriculum.
All of the resources on campus in the opportunities and then at the end. We are going to have an opportunity they have Q&A so you'll just.
Oh, it's alright I'm looking for Oh, you're just you want to um send in your message to chat once the presentations over and will open it up and connect questions by the weekend.
Trelsie Trotman
03:03:24 PM
If it cuts off accidentally will I be able to reconnect?
OK, so the accelerated program so I know many of you out there are interested in nursing. You know you definitely want to go into the field of nursing.
You know what which option is best for me, so for the accelerated program here at Penn. There's 3 options that you can choose from the first one, is that the S and 2nd degree and it's really for the student who knows? They want to go into nursing, but they might not be short. One specialty they want to go into they might not be sure what area of nursing their interested in maybe they like all areas. They like inpatient outpatient public health interesting research adult Pediatrics. This secondary is perfect for you 'cause it allows you the opportunity to explore all the different populations all the different settings.
And then you can decide at that point if you want to continue onto a graduate level.
The next option that we have is our BSN MSN and that's for students who know what graduate specialty. They're interested in so if you know, I want to be introspective sinaran family. I want to be a pediatric acute care nurse practitioner with oncologix concentration. I would be a nurse midwife, you would want to apply toward the S and MSN program and my recommendation is if you're 80% short of population and or 7. I know I want kids I know I want to be in a hospital environment.
Feel free to apply to that specialty now you know if you're really not sure you can do. The second degree and we'll talk a little bit about how you can submit regulate into a graduate program. Now there's a little error on their Tuesday. TMP on there. You can only do the BSN MSN program option. But for those of you interested in nurse anesthesia DNP. We do have the opportunity for students to some matriculate into a graduate program for nurse anesthesia so while you're in the BSN portion you can apply to the N seizure program here as a second degree student.
And then we have our home, India send a PhD which is for the student definitely knows. I want to go to nursing their interested in research. Academia kind of wanna get involved in answering questions and creating policies and really kind of going into that side of Healthcare. It's a perfect option for you and allows you to finish your PSN start. pH D coursework start your PhD research and you would finish your pH D within 2, 1/2 to 3 years after the BSN and there is funding available for the moment program.
Tarikwa Leveille
03:05:52 PM
My screen is stuck on slide 1 :(
Now it doesn't matter which option you choose. Everyone is together for the BSN portion your one homework for the BSN and the BSN program is currently 18 months.
So whether you come India, some MSN second degree, Hillman, the BSN portion is exactly 18 months.
Alright so hopefully everyone is still able to see it.
So it's 18 months or program starts in June of every year. June 8th is the start date for next year to 18 months for the bachelors degree and the length of the Masters really depends on the specialty that you've chosen so all of our nurse practitioner specialties or 12 to 16 months full time nurse midwifery administration are 18 months full time and are nursing a Sesia is a 3 year full-time DNP. The nurse practitioner tracks midwifery admin currently are MSN tracks so you get a Masters of Science in nursing.
Within a year to year and a half and then you can apply to uh. We do have an executive style. I'm sorry a post Masters. DNP so students can apply at some point after their MSN to do our exact RDP, which is a postmasters. It's one year full time, 2 years part time and it will be exclusively online.
Starting in the fall of 2020.
Now our goal is to matriculate a class of about 85 to 90 accelerated students wear on national programs which seems to come to us from all over the country. They also have a variety of different backgrounds. We have everything from chemistry science majors can filed neuroscience. We have our psychology majors human development public health are art majors history. English you name it.
They're going into the field of nursing, they're coming from a variety of different backgrounds in deciding that nursing is a good fit for that. We also seem to have a pH degrees. Masters degrees in education and counseling as well as sometimes. We also have lawyers that have left their field in coming to nursing or high pH. DS in the coming to nursing so it's a really diverse wonderful group of students that come to nursing for very different reasons. But they all have the same goal of kind of working with patients an entry in the healthcare field.
Our goal we hope to but we usually admit between Sept 2730% of our applicant pool. We have a little bit over 600 applications that come in and of the 600 about 30% will be admitted into the program and then we matriculate about 85 to 90 and under represented minorities is slightly over 20% definitely number that we continue to work at and hope to continue to work at as we go through the admissions process.
Tessa Leshkiw
03:08:37 PM
Working fine for me! Thank you
The accelerated nursing program so this is just the timeline just to kind of give you guys an idea October 15th is our application deadline.
We do not have early decision. We don't have rolling admissions. We really do not look. The applications will after the 15th so feel free to start the application now. Get your recommenders in the system look at the personal statement start working on the video interview. But just now other than committing it around before the 15th. You don't have to send that prior to that we go to committee at the end of January and we hope to notify all of our applicants in early February and.
Students usually have about 5:00 to 6:00 weeks to let us know so coming within that time frame. We figure playing the study your financial aid package all that good stuff.
And then in mid June. We have our start date so that just the timeline just to kind of give you a sense, so you're going to spend the next few months, preparing for the application and then hopefully by early February will now admissions decision.
So these are the prerequisite courses, so something just to keep in mind. You can apply to the program, while you're completing your prereqs as long as all of your prerequisite courses are completed by May 31st 2020 gives you plenty of time to get us through final craze and you could start the program on June 8th now. Keep this simple I know there's a lot of programs out there. They all asked for different requirements. Different courses for Penn. Keep it simple, introductory courses specifically for anatomy, Physiology, human anatomy and Physiology. We don't want comparative.
And we needed to be human based so you can do anatomy, Physiology, part one and Part 2. You can do 2 separate courses. One anatomy want Physiology. Make sure there's an anatomy lab and that only the requirement introduction into the bio in biology are the other classes as well as nutrition. In fact, for statistics. We accept any statistics course, so biostatic social facts business tax.
Jen Sun
03:11:02 PM
For BSN/MSN, would any of my Biology courses count for the prerequisites?
Complete a statistics course will transferred in it does not have to be a health care related or bio stats class and then the other classes that health care ethics course. Bioethics medical ethics. It has to be in ethics course that covers medical issues research within research. Clinical practice privacy and so on, so that's optional. You can take it up and without any problems so those are the prerequisite courses.
Application requirements, so a little bit about the application. The good news is that at Penn. Our application is online. Everything is pretty much submitted online for pen so if URIT University to to our nursing program. It's your typical application personal statement, which is really why, why nursing? What are your goals? How do you see yourself practicing it's really important with the personal statement that you really talk about nursing and you talk about why it's a good fit for you.
And you know there's a lot of health care careers out there where you can have clinical practice where you can interact with potential patients. But what is it about nursing that it is a fit for you, you know? How did you come to find that as a career you know everyone applying had different plans at different times and they kind of come to the decision that they won't do nursing so while I do here definitely spend time on the nursing piece. The other thing and I might talk a little bit more about this in depth is, if you had exposure to health care if you have a personal health care experience.
That led you to nursing you definitely wanna make sure you highlight that either in your personal statement on your resume.
2 recommendations so definitely a minimum of one academic recommendation would be strongly strongly recommended. I notice required here. If you've been out of college for over 10 years. Maybe your prereqs are over 5 years old and you don't have an academic bracket. That's fine. You could submit to supervisor X if you're a new graduate and you've graduated within the last year or 2. I would do to academic Rex. We allow up to 3 recommendations so students could submit an academic.
Supervisor wreck those are the 2:00 that I would strongly recommend you stick with for your required to recommendations either someone who has supervised you kind of full time position or an academic recommendation from a professor faculty, possibly TA PhD student something along those lines.
The 3rd documentation can be someone else, it can be maybe you volunteer at the hospital and it's the supervisor of the Volunteers. Maybe you're doing research part time and they're going to be that third recommendation, so really think about who can be, but make sure those 2 recommendations are academic or supervisor wrecked for the required recommendations because they do hold more weight than someone who just knows you as a volunteer.
It came just it can be stronger for your application. It can help the other thing is all of your college transcript. So even if you took art history in a Community College over the summer while your undergrad. We need that transcript. If you studied abroad in your grades are posted on your undergraduate transcript with the final grade. You do not need the official transcript from your study abroad program if it just says transfer give us something from your official trip study abroad program so all college transcripts, even from your prerequisite courses your undergraduate degree.
Any other forces have taken the rather than May.
One thing about the resume that I think is really important. You know this isn't a work resume. It doesn't have to be one page. It doesn't have to be concise. This can really be tool that you use to highlight all aspects of your life, you know you'll hear admissions office is always talk about how they want well, rounded students students that are only academically strong, but involved in a community or school in their cities. This is a great place to highlight all those things so make sure you have.
James Grant
03:15:13 PM
For any of the prerequisites or application requirements (GRE) is there a time limit (ex: within 5 years) that would need for them to be retaken?
Ossific comedies if you're an avid runner biker to play sports. If you play a musical instrument. If you're if you travel speak a second language. All of those things make sure you include that on your resume somewhere 'cause. We want to see that we want to get to know the applicant as much as we possibly can and definitely also highlight your exposure to health care. So we're going to talk a little bit about more about this in the next slide. But if you want ear if you shadow nurses or nurse practitioners if you.
Our caregiver for a family member if you do research clinical research healthcare related whatever it is if your CNA. EMT you want to make sure it's highlighted on your resume and I always recommend having a healthcare exposure or experiences related to health care where you can kind of highlight that on your rest of them and also any clubs organizations in anything that you're involved in Bogra. Undergrad currently highlight that put that on your resume you know if you volunteer at the Food Bank, it should be on your resume.
Were president of your marketing club put that on a resume if you were part of the Greek system in college and you held a novel, Sir positions are there any restaurant we want to see those things if you were involved in bench science research highlight that even if it was a part time job in college so really think about all the things you've done and make sure you highlight that on the application if at all possible.
The jury so this is really important. This is brand new to our admissions process. So we used to require the GRE for RV S and MSN applicants. We are no longer requiring the jury for RV SNMSN. The jury is still required Ferguson to PhD. I strongly recommend that you're in the 60th percentile with your G resource for math and verbal and that if you're playing toward home in program. But you're playing tour. BSN MSN flow program. You could be eligible for Jerry Waiver. So basically if your bachelors degree is a 3.2 or higher.
Or if you completed a graduate degree your weight from taking the juries so you could submit your application for the SMSF without the jury scores their waived if your current GPA for your undergraduate degree is a 3 two if you're currently in college, finishing your bachelors degree as long as your current GPA on the transcript. You submit to us as a 3.2 GPA or higher. Your weight from the journey as well. If you do not have every .2.
You do have to take the juries, but the jury who recommend the 50th percentile with your plan torpedoes. In addition option.
Another new aspect of the application is that we have incorporated a video interview for our application. So the video interview asks 3:00 to 4:00 questions and there's a little bit of overlap with the personal statement. But this is a great opportunity to get to know the African a little bit more, but also learn a little bit more about your interest in nursing and specifically pen so there's 3 or 4 question prompts and you have a 10 minute window to report your interview. You have one session where you can practice in and make sure all the.
Technology is working and then you have an additional recording time and you have a second chance, reporting as well, OK, so you know the deadline is October 15th. Obviously, try not to start the video interview on the 15th. You may want to do it a couple of weeks at least a week beforehand so that if you have to record a second interview. If you're not happy with the first recording you can do that as well.
A financial aid forms deadline is December 15, 2019 and we'll talk a little bit about financially.
The next slide is what is the emissions committing looking for so this is really where the evaluation of your application comes in and you know it's really up to the student up to the applicant to incorporate your interest in nursing. And why your exposure to health care what you ultimately want to do? How do you see yourself practicing do you know about relation you want to work with? How do you see yourself in the future and what activities things you want to take advantage of your iPad. You want to make sure that all part of your app overall video interview.
Maybe your personal statement recommendations but when we are reviewing the application, there's kind of two things that we look at it really strongly 1st is kind of the quantitative side of everything so we look at your undergraduate GPA we recommend a 3.0 or higher.
Average of the admitted classes at three five, but I will and I promise you we miss students under 30 every single year and we deny are very, very high GPA so that's one aspect of your application the closer you are to underground.
The the more important your GPA is the further away. You are from your undergraduate degree graduation. The less important GPA becomes and the more important your exposure to health care becomes so really understand that it's very holistic approach to the admissions process. We review every single applicant application holistically so one thing that we look at is your undergraduate GPA and then we specifically look at your science grades and anything. You've recently completed so recent courses are really important right 'cause you're coming straight into this nursing program within a year.
How are you doing in the classes are currently enrolled at but more importantly? How are you doing? In the science courses specifically anatomy and Physiology so.
If you haven't taken amp and you are taking anatomy, Physiology, and the fall. Make sure you take it where you've got time to do really well on that 'cause we do put a lot of emphasis on those grades so anatomy, Physiology, your undergraduate GPA is kind of the quantitative side of everything then the other side is really the why.
You know why nursing what exposure do you have? What are you involved in as well as you know?
The leadership side of things we want students that are going to come to Penn and get involved. Whether it's working with the faculty on research whether it's volunteering at a clinic in Philadelphia weather. It's becoming a part time. CNA at the hospital. You know working maybe 1 day a month, whatever it is being part of campus, joining clubs organizations.
Joining one of our research centers, we really want students that are going to be get involved, and really kind of contribute to the to the community here at Penn and the community turn. Philadelphia specifically exposure to health care, though I think is I would say the Top 3 things that we look at because we want to make sure that students are coming into the program prepare this nursing program. You're going to see healthy patients. You're also going to be very sick patients. You'll experience for any could experience stuff like we want to make sure students are comfortable in that environment.
But more importantly that they understand the role of an RN nurse practitioner nurse midwife, whatever it is that they ultimately want to do that. They've done their research and understand it. So definitely make sure you expose you talk about your exposure to health care and make sure you kind of highlight all of those aspects.
So it's just kind of an overview. But the one thing I want to make sure that you guys cat is that you know holistic approach to the application. We don't do. One thing and we have denied students with very, very high GPA's because they're missing that nursing peace out why that exposure that interest and leave denied due to have a lower undergraduate GPA because that exposure in that those goals related to health care and their leadership is so much higher and so much more robust so it's all about here.
So definitely take the time and really kind of incorporate some of those pieces to your application.
Next One is graduated specialties so at Penn. We have 14 graduate specialties here at the University all over the specialties listed on this slide are.
Masters prepared so you're going to get a Masters of Science in nursing and at the end of the MSN you'll sit for the certification exam for that specific field except for nursing a seizure, which is currently a DNP program and it's a 3 year full time only program so these are all the options. We have whatever you're thinking we have it. We've got the adult population, dot in Gerontology, both acute and primary. You can do an oncology minor if you want to work specifically in oncology with adults. They have family primary Women's Health pediatric primary.
Adult Gerald primary as well, and then we also have our pediatric acute care, we can concentrate in 3 different Herring's got to chronic critical care in oncology and we have our psychiatric mental health, which is definitely seen an increase in interest over the last 4 to 5 years old nurse practitioner tracks at the end of that. You sit for the exam. You become an MP and you also get an MSN is your degree with those post Masters and post.
This NP program once you have your Ms bag, you can then apply to any post. Masters DNP program out there and there's a lot of on Penn has one. It's 2 years. Part time or one year full time and it can be done online and I think you come to campus. Maybe 3 times over the year time frame and maybe 3 times over the two year time frame, but it's a great opportunity. You can be working as a nurse practitioner and getting that TMP on the side and all the nurse practitioner programs are 12 months.
14 or 16 months and length full time and all of them can be done part time or full time.
Then we have our nurse with the free program, which is 18 month and SN at the end of that Lady a certified nurse midwife and you can go on for postmasters. TMP if you like the DMP degree and then we also have have leadership in nursing in Healthcare Administration. Again, they can also do a postmaster CNP. But in about a year and a half or so, maybe 2 years, will hopefully have an executive style DMP for our leadership and admin students.
OK, so those lists all of the programs and then we have our these are just some things to think about as a graduate student so the nice thing about the accelerated program at Penn is at the DSM is very, very, very structured. It's 18 months full time only you start in June of 2020 graduate December of twenty twenty one. There's not a lot of movement in there, we can make it a little longer. We can't make it shorter very sex very scheduled. Clinicals everything the Masters programs give you a little bit more leeway. You can do it part time you can do it.
Rachel Nahamo
03:25:29 PM
If we apply to BSN/MSN buy do not get in, can we still be accepted to just BSN?
Full time you could start part time and switch to full time. There's a combination of different things that you can do. One thing to note is that all the programs can be completed part time except for anesthesia and midwifery certain programs require RN experience. So you have to finish the VSM go into the workforce, then come back and finish your Masters degree pediatric critical care, acute chronic oncology. Neo Natal Nurse Anesthesia and our adult acute care specialties along ecology all require work experience of one year.
Except for neonatal which requires a 2 year work experience in and it go.
And the one nice thing about our completing our Masters degree is that our BSN MSN students have up to 5 years to come back and complete their Masters degree from when they graduate with their BS at which gives them so much flexibility so even though the programs that don't require work experience. Let's say you want to be a Women's Health nurse practitioner, but you really want to work as an RN like you're excited about that piece. You want to do 3 years of RN. RN work working and maybe a Community Center may be working on a womans health floor in a college you name it.
You can do that and still keep your acceptance to the MSN for Women's Health and start the MSN 3 years after you be assigned gets the worm experience come back to full time over a year or come back into a part time over 2 years, so a lot of flexibility in terms of company in those degrees for our students. The other thing that we offer is that we allowed to take 3 graduate courses. Well, there in the BSN program so while you're finishing your grad your bachelors degree in nursing. You're going to take 3 courses that will count towards your MSN.
It does not save you time it doesn't shorten the program. But it does definitely save. You money when you get to the MSN portion of the program and a little bit of time, so it's easier to work part time too.
Amanda Cathcart
03:27:13 PM
What are you looking for specifically in letters of recommendation?
And then of course we talked about working full time and doing the MSN program parts. Now, if you are a BS and 2nd degree student and your ipad and you decide you know what I know what I want to do now. I want to be a pediatric primary nurse practitioner. You can apply 7 circulate into Pete's primary and all of these benefits are the same you can still take 3 grad courses. You still 5 years to finish your degree. You can go part time you can go full time you can work in between your VSN in your MSN and all of our B FM S in students do have the opportunity to request a change in their specialty.
Please note it is not guaranteed. But if you have if you can talk to your.
The new program director some program directors wanted interview someone should write a personal statement. Others what you do, possibly do it application. That's pretty rare. That's usually just anesthesia. But you can change your mind so if you come in BSN MSN piece primary you realize you really, really love your sleep with free you can request switch into nursing with free by being with the program director so you're never logged into your program choice but there is no guarantee in terms of switching but historically our students have been pretty fortunate.
I would say nurse anesthesia and nurse midwifery of the 2 programs that are probably the ones that will deny students of device students from switching your changing specialties and it just because of the fact there full time. There's limited number of spots a variety of different things. But being a pen, you get to talk to them except conversations with their program director. You really get a good sense of what the program entails what they're looking for an?
What you should do to prepare to switch your specialty?
Moving on to a sample plan of study so this is RBSN planet study like I said, This is pretty pretty structured. The Clinicals, which are the ones that are marked with their little abstract. They are the clinical courses and they have to be done in the sequence OK, so you can't do the math sequence.
In general unless you want to stay longer. Then you technically could do them out of sequence. But most groups. I want to stay longer. Those are the clinical course is the non clinical courses. After this summer session. Those clip the other courses can be interchangeable, meaning instead of taking scientific inquiry for evidence based practice in the fall. You might take it in the spring and take the policy for the fall. So there's a little movement in some of the courses. But in general. This is the planet study. It's an intensive 18 months.
Students start my junior here for about 9 weeks in the summer. I think this summer, is the most intensive time because you're in class for 40 hours a week. Tomorrow is the last day for our accelerated students who started this summer and.
They are the literally cannot wait to take that back wall. I'm sure that they can't wait to take the final but they can't wait to take that pathophysiology final.
On Friday at 9:00 o'clock and they're going to be out of here by 1:00 o'clock in the afternoon so you know they're going to get about a week off and get some rest before they come back and start the fall semester this summer, is the most intensive because of the time commitment 40 hours a week in the classroom lab lecture component and then use optical home and studying proud but it's manageable sushi successful with very low attrition in our program. I would say you know, I've been I've been in the position for about 15 years.
Lily Balsen
03:30:54 PM
If, at this point, your healthcare experience is limited, do you recommend holding off on applying? Even if you are sure that nursing is what you want to do?
I could probably stay in 15 years we probably only had maybe under tend to do that. If that never complete the program. We have some students you take a little longer, they might take time off like happens, but we have very, very little attrition in our program.
This is accelerated program, the beautiful thing about the BSM is in the summer. You do physical's estimate. You do are integrated pathophysiology pharmacology cores enter into nursing social diversity course in the fall. You started clinicals you'll do fine. Alexa bogey, followed by 5 weeks of sight and then 6 weeks of Pediatrics, and then we've got our Med surgeon general in the spring in terms of intensity. I think that spring semester is the most.
Intense in terms of workload and information and knowledge and things that you have to do because when you're doing Med. Surg you're literally going over everything that can go wrong. In the human body inside of weeks everything from respiratory and cardiovascular and renal and you know, Ortho Nuro's everything so it's definitely a lot of information you're also dealing with more sick patients on the floor. There's more to do in terms of preparing for those clinical experiences, but it's Great 'cause. It's really hands on you get to do a lot more and those Nets urgent.
Linh Nguyen
03:32:09 PM
To apply for advanced practice programs (anesthesia, midwife), it requires RN license, right?
Rotations then you do a Pediatrics because Pediatrics very, very controlled do the children. You know site as a combination of therapy and Med Management. So there's not a lot of it's a little bit different in terms of that hands hands on experience in the summer. You're going to do the community nursing and then the last semester of the BSN, which is a wonderful you get to request for you like to spend it. You get a list of options, so they'll say we've got ers we have oncology we have.

Is there a recommended number of hours for healthcare experience admissions is looking for?
General mad we have whatever it is all those different floors. Neural Ortho and you would request your different settings. You know adult Pediatrics, sometimes will have community sites and that last semester. You'll do 212 hour shifts. I think over 10 weeks.
And get that really hands-on clinical experience in transition into that future nurse so that's the last semester. When you have a little bit of say we find all of your clinical sites. You do not define any of them for any of our programs, including the graduate program.
These are some of our clinical uhm.
Clinical placements, so the Top three hospitals listed are actually part of the University of Pennsylvania health system so which is the first unless it is literally next door to the nursing building.
Top one of the Top 10 hospitals in the country and you will do your Med search injera rotations, either at hub or Presbyterian Medical Center, which is 6 blocks North of here.
Pennsylvania hospital is actually the 1st Hospital United States been around forever. It was independent for over 100 years and is now part of Penn Health Systems, been part of the health system. For many decades and we do our OB rotations and sometimes our site. Clinicals are there and then of course, the last for Messenger you can do some additional rotations as well. Children's Hospital. Philadelphia is not affiliated with pen, but it is the number to Children's Hospital in the country were extremely fortunate. It's literally right next door to the nursing building.
A lot of our pediatric faculty who teach at the Masters level at the batch list level who do research in the nursing building. All of clinical assignments at shop so they are clinically active. They understand what's happening there at the forefront of? What's changing in the in the field of the children, Medison and bring it to the classroom immediately. So lots of opportunities, you'll definitely do your pediatric rotations there. Now we have 2 suburban hospitals that we use. This is all for your BSN 2 suburban hospitals, we use one is like an old.
And the other ones Paoli. It's in the suburbs of Philadelphia and that's where we tend to do her OB clinicals as well. It's another one of our sites. The feet in Philadelphia, VA Medical Center is 3 blocks N. We do some of our psych rotations are last semester rotation, sometimes community. We have some outpatient work that they do, and then of course, our community locations are literally throughout the Philadelphia Metropolitan area.
Nursing homes Hospice holds clinics behavior health centers rehab centers. That's where our community location is and then there's a 200 other locations for RBSN that we use occasionally and then when you hit the Masters level. We're talking about. Hundreds and hundreds of locations. And we find that all of those clinical sites for you. But something to note is that you do not need a car for the BSN portion of the program as long as you live with in the Philadelphia area, or you live where you can take a quick.
Kira Poncelet
03:36:07 PM
Does your curriculum for nurse-midwifery include information and training on medication and surgical abortion in the first-trimester?
Training or bust into the city. You don't need a car for the program if for any reason you need a car so like when we do our we do a home health community clinical location. Obviously you can't take public transit to 3 different houses. Every time you have your community clinical so we do have some accounts with Philly car share where students can rent a car under pen and get to the clinical types that they need otherwise you can get there via public transit walking.
Have a pretty easy so no car fire.
And moving on a little bit so opportunities available, so this to me is probably one of the obviously the faculty that are here are amazing.
Like I said many of them politically practice. Many of them are involved in research and teach they do a combination of all of that. They bring a lot to the table into the classroom. But the other thing that I think really help spent stand out is that?
Your first and foremost the University of Pennsylvania's do you have access to all of the University resources on the learning Resource Center the counseling center you name? It you have access to all of them.
But then the nursing schools really small we're only about 1300 students from the VSN to the PhD.
I'm just gonna see it like him.
I'm sorry I was just seeing if I can make this light bigger. We're only about 1300 students from again to the PhD. It's really the best of both worlds. A small community with them in Nursing School. You'll get through the faculty. The staff Norco work very well. But you have the resources of a large University of the resources of a major teaching hospital and healthcare system resources on Campus Learning Resource Center Counseling Center. All of the libraries. We bring in speakers from all over the world that all over the country variety of different areas.
It's a really wonderful place to eat where you can really hone in on whatever you ultimately want to do with nursing and take that experience? Why are also in the nursing program so some of the opportunities available have a state of the art simulation lab? I think we have some information online. Where can see some pictures of our lab and some fun things that they do in simulation simulation learning is that big aspect of your education at Penn. If you are in the Arctic selling to a certain program you will do combination.
Every clinical has electric component a clinical component and a lab component. UMass must pass each one of one of those sections independently to pass the course, so it's really hands-on going there every week. Learning different techniques. How to put a Catherine? How to just saloon how to do ivs how to work with chest choose how to work with patients who are integrated all of those things while you're in the lab.
University of Pennsylvania is a huge research institution as a fiscal nursing before major research centers on campus in nursing that you can get involved in I would say our accelerated. Students can have a part time job again. Nothing crazy 5 to 8 hours a week very minimal after the summer is over. You can work and research tends to be that perfect job little bit of exposure to the healthcare field learning about research working to faculty member that you really admire in terms of their work or area of research.
You know, we have everything from policy took women's house global studies. We do, we're doing a lot of work with the old blue eyed addiction and Philadelphia and around the country looking at health. Authorities HealthEquity there's so much going on that you're going to find it and if you don't find it in nursing. the University of Pennsylvania. There's somebody on campus doing it. There's big focus on interdisciplinary study a lot of our faculty have dual assignments there in engineering and in nursing their Norton any nursing.
So that's exciting for students as well. But in the research. You'll see it a lot more than it specifically in chance of classes wonderful steam organizations. We also have some combined programs and send MPH Masters with a Masters in public health Masters in business Business Administration, or Masters of bioethics. You can combine it with your MSN and then we have our sub matriculation options for our second degrees, which I talked about a second degree student. Once you're here, you can apply to anyone ever graduate specialties in spring.
The BSN program as long as you maintain A32 GPA. We wait, the cherries for him and then we also have some study abroad programs.
So these this just list the ones that most of the accelerated students will take advantage of. We don't have a full semester abroad for our accelerated soups because of the time frame. The Botswana trip, which might turn into the Trinidad trip still up in the air has a clinical component where students can actually go brought into the community. Health clinicals abroad. He didn't do it this summer, but we've been doing it for the last 10 years. So I don't know if next year. It'll be Botswana and possibly try that want to see.
And then there's short-term study abroad programs, Thailand, Hong Kong, Latin America, India, Spain. We also have a program in China and.
Trelsie Trotman
03:41:13 PM
Can you put your email in the chat box ?
That goes to the last two I mentioned are part of the University experience. These are specific to nursing students only from nursing students. But there are observationally based trip so you go abroad for just a few weeks, maybe 2:00 to 3:00 weeks during your break time the nice thing about our accelerated program currently is that it allows students to take a break at the end of the BSN. I'm sorry. I think end of the spring semester. You have like 2 to 3 weeks off before you come back for the summer session, so you could go abroad and go to Spain for those 2 to 3 weeks.
And we're always looking for new program so there could be new program. Some programs go on hiatus for a year based on faculty, but we definitely have a group of students. I go abroad every year.
These are some of the resources I mentioned some of them already. It's that perfect blend of X small school nursing students. All have an office student services. We could access and talk to them about your.
Play the study, the resources you need maybe need to go to the Learning Resource Center. Maybe you need a 2 dirt. We would work with them. Everyone is assignment faculty impaired visor and then of course, we have access to the entire University resources as well.
I think that's it. Uhm not too bad. I usually go a little over so that's the presentation. Again, like, I said, We're going to share this with everybody, but now we're going to go ahead and open it up to Q&A and see what questions you have for us.
Christy Park
03:42:30 PM
Do you accept AP credit for Statistics?
Ashley Morgan
03:42:32 PM
Could you tell me what the financial break down is for the program?
So the 1st question, I'm going to read the question because. Unfortunately, I don't think on the web and are you can see the chat so I don't have to repeat the question even though you guys probably see the questions so for the BSN MSN with any of my biology courses count for the prereqs so if you were a biology major. It definitely counts for bio into bio. If you took 'em Microbiology Bacteriology course accounts for microbiology. It just depends which ones you want to use for your credits.
Michelle George
03:42:48 PM
How many credits per semester? What is the pass grade for each class?
Um for any of the prerequisites or application requirements. Is there a time limit 5 years old. Yes.
Yeqi Chen
03:42:55 PM
Hi, I am curious about the average GPA of accepted student for BSN/MSN program?
Corinne Condie
03:43:13 PM
How big are the lecture classes? Is it all 85-90 students?
Jessica Barnett
03:43:24 PM
Will you look at GRE scores even if they are waived? (especially when deciding between competitive candidates)
So the jury has to be submitted within 5 years and that's not our time limit. It's the ETS college for the People that run the exam. They actually erase and delete your scores after 5 years. So you can't even get them. So we can get that so G razor within 5 years. The prerequisite courses. Anatomy and Physiology needs to be within 5 to 6 years very rarely do. We make an exception. We want that class those classes to be really fresh in your mind you're jumping into Patho Phys Farm, it's really intense.
Ban Muneeb
03:43:30 PM
I have a bachelor degree from overseas, is it ok to apply?
Brian Eagan
03:43:32 PM
What types of financial aid opportunities are available? Is it similar to undergraduate aid or are the options different because its a second degree?
So anatomy, Physiology, 5 to 6 years microbiology. We really like within 5 to 6 years, amazingly enough. There's been new viruses and.
Danielle Maizes
03:43:51 PM
I am considering neonatal Nurse Practitioner but have a high GPA at my current university. Can you please explain why high GPA students are denied if I do have some experience?
Michelle George
03:43:57 PM
Is there an opportunity for an on campus visit/open day?
Diseases and things that have come up over the last 5 to 6 years that have been around but not talked about so you know, we'd like to see that and then statistics nutrition Cam bio. We will go up to 10 years chemistry biology. We sometimes go to 15 depends on your application. But I would take 10 years pretty safe. No problems and then for anatomy, Physiology, micro that 5:00 to 6:00 year mark.
Remy Klugman
03:44:05 PM
When applying to the BSN/MSN program, are certain specialties more competitive than others? Are some specialties more limited in terms of spots?
OK, so if you planted the BSN MSN, but you don't get in. Can you still be accepted to just the SN? Yes, so Rachel? Asked Yes, but you come in you apply BSN MSN? Let's say for nurse midwifery. The midwifery faculty are not accepting you into the midwifery program. But we think you're really good fit for the BSN. We will admit you into the BS and 2nd degree program and then once you're here, you could always apply to the Masters at a later date. And you don't have to do anything specific. We kind of internally do it for students.
Ban Muneeb
03:44:47 PM
Im living in VA, can I take the prerequisit courses in my State?
Trelsie Trotman
03:44:53 PM
The GRE is now required? I had lost connection at a certain point
Next question to Amanda asked what are you looking for specifically in letters of recommendation great questions so we specifically want to hear about a couple of things academic correct. We want to hear about your academic abilities that your inquisitive that you're fast learner that you're the leader in the class that should come to you for help that you did, extremely well in your exam that you understand the material that you put the time into it that you ask for help like all of those things.
Yeqi Chen
03:45:15 PM
If I am a current undergraduate, can I only provide academic recommendation letters?
Jen Sun
03:45:18 PM
Would it be more beneficial to graduate a year early or finish on time and continue to work on grades and health care experience?
And on and then the non academic one. We want to see leadership your characteristics. You know that you that they can see you in the field of nursing that you'd make a great future nurse or nurse practitioner midwife or whatever it is, and that's for both of those that you can kind of see you in the field. But they want you want. You want them to highlight your characteristics talk about your successes and if and if you're a leader in the classroom or not, but you take initiative, especially in your job that you kind of.
Take things and go with it and run with it and get it done. Those are kind of some of the things that we look for you know every recommendation is slightly different depending on the relationship that African past with them. But we want to see kind of that, really strong support for this student who will do well. Academically, who will contribute to the to the curriculum. I'm sorry to the community. Those are kinda big pieces that were looking for.
Andrew Bullotta
03:46:17 PM
If you are not accepted to the BSN program the first time you apply, does that hurt your chances if you apply again?
So at this point your health care experience is limited do you recommend holding off on applying even if you're sure nurses want to do I wouldn't necessarily pulled up on applying I mean? It's really up to the applicant to highlight it so for example, I had a student who worked at the feedback for like 2 years. So when you would look at her before you render us say you just kind of look at our record. Your estimate would be like well. There's not much here and there's no mention of shadowing hospital or anything along those lines.
But then her personal statement really talked about you know who the food bank was servicing. The lack of access to Healthcare? How can they control their diabetes and hypertension all of those things without access to healthy foods and her seeing the community struggling really kind of letter to healthcare letter wanting to do things and her kind of exploring the field so she explained it and more in her personal statement versus listing it on her resume so it's completely up to you as long as you can really express the interest you have in that you.
At least you know met a nurse shadowed a nurse. You know you have goals related to the field of nursing and why it's a good fit for you, I don't think you have to wait till apply.
Um to apply for advanced practice programs and see German growth rate requires RN license right, yeah, so for any nurse practitioner mid with three anesthesia. You must be an RN with a minimum of a bachelors degree to apply to those graduate level programs.
Jessica Barnett
03:47:50 PM
Does Penn help students find job placements if they are taking a break between the accelerated and masters programs?
Correct and you have to have an RN license to actually start the programming start clinicals you have to be cool. You have to be a licensed registered nurse in order to prepare to become an advanced practice nurse in Clinicals.
Sophia Schott
03:48:05 PM
How do you apply for a combined program? (MSN/MBE)
Is there recommended number of hours for health care experience that we're looking for it? No we do not require any sort of minimum hours everyone doesn't different some students.
Sharnell Brown
03:48:20 PM
For the the BSN program GRE waiver...if my undergraduate degree GPA doesn't include most of my nursing pre-reqs, is my GPA overall weighted? Would I still qualify for the GRE waiver with the additional classes I took outside my first degree?
Our clinical their clinical research coordinators, so they will a lot of clinical experience. Others are EMTs in CNN's they have a lot, but then other students. It's volunteering once a week. It's a personal health care experience. So it doesn't look like a lot, but it's enough for for the missions office for the student to really figure out that nursing for that, so no minimum required hours at all.
Jessica Barnett
03:48:32 PM
How specific should the career goals be in the personal statement?
So that the curriculum finish midwifery include information and training on medication and surgical abortions in the 1st trimester.
So here uh Kira Kira asked that I will say I don't know I do know that we definitely talk about abortion care.
Jessica Barnett
03:48:51 PM
Can the resume be structured like a CV?
We definitely talk about.
Christy Park
03:49:16 PM
What is the process for getting licensure in California and taking the NCLEX?
The medication because in some states you can prescribe you're prescribing Madison. It depends on the state offense. They need midwife, scored very limited, but not not or not I want to say yes for sure. But why don't you send me an email? I'll forward it to the program director just to confirm but I know that you definitely work on suturing you work on AMD's all of those aspects and I believe abortion cares.
Samantha Huymaier
03:49:30 PM
Who do I speak to about applying so I complete my prerequisites? I have a BA in Psychology and will need to update myself on all classes but statistics.
Yeah, so my emails right here on the slide. You can get from there, so do you expect AP credits that we actually do if you have a 5 at 8:00 P stacks of 5 in AP bio. We accept it for our biology and statistics requirement, but it has to be a 5 it can't be a 4 or 3.
Lee Damsky
03:49:47 PM
If we enter the ABSN program and then decide mid-program which specialty we want to pursue, how would application/ submatriculation work?
Could you tell me what the financial breakdown is for the program Oh yes, I'm sorry. I bet financially so the accelerated. BSN program is roughly 122 thousand dollars for the DSM program that's the tuition and fees for the program.
We definitely offer financial aid we offer grant based age scholarship, which is not based on financial need, and of course, the loads alternative loans, which are bag sponsored loans and then of course, some federal loans as well. I'm not going to sugarcoat it. The accelerated BSN second degree portion of the program is definitely loan happy for a majority of our students so even with the best financially package are still taking out loans when you hit the Masters level.
There's a little bit more flexibility because you pay per class at the Masters level and you could do the program part time. So you can be working, bringing in money and we have tuition benefits discounts for some students who work in different healthcare settings. In the in the city so if you're a University of Pennsylvania health system employee. The health system gives you $8000 a calendar year towards your education, which pays for about a class in a half a pen and pen offers.
Corinne Condie
03:51:06 PM
You mentioned you can apply to DNP (anesthesia) from the ABSN program, can you briefly expand on that? Do you need work experience before starting the program? Could you apply for the DNP (anesthesia) after a BSN/MSN program?
One course for free if you complete 3 classes if you take 4 classes within a calendar year. The 4th class is free. If you use your tuition benefits for the first two you pay for the 3rd and then Ken will pay for the floor. So we have some tuition benefits out there for the Masters. There's there's more options at the Masters level because you could start part time. Even go full time it does cost a little bit glass coasters less classes, they were taking.
But on our financial aid website so if you go to our website. Which of course I forgot to W there if you go to www.nursing document W click on excellerated click on financial aid it's one of the topics to the right under admissions. You can go to the accelerated page. It'll give you much more information as well.
And the other thing is look for outside scholarships any outside scholarships. You can find will accept them. Go to the hersel website, hrsa.gov, though there's a website and ask and sign up for their newsletter. They've nursed for scholarship paper. I did different things that you can do.
So to do how many credits per semester. What is the pass grade for each class break the ship so product credits per semester, so pen is almost see you system so once EU is roughly 3 credit hours or four credit hours in our students cannot take more than 5.5 credit 5.5 horse units, which is.
Probably close to about 18 credits give are take.
Maybe closer 19 credits so it's about 5:00 and a half the past grade. I believe is a 70 or higher for all of the classes.
Jen Sun
03:52:44 PM
Could I take the prerequisites at UPenn as a nonmatriculating major after graduation
I think it sincere higher for all the classes. You have to have a 2.0 overall to get your BSN from Penn and I think for clinicals it. It has to be a secant BAD or some of our other classes probably could pull off and if you needed to.
Trelsie Trotman
03:53:19 PM
Is there a student that I can shadow for the day to understand a day in life on UPENNs campus
Michelle George
03:53:26 PM
Will you please provide some examples of research that BSN students can be involved with, please? Particularly around global health/chronic and infectious disease/epidemiology.
OK, what's the average you can be accepted students for the BSN MSN program. So we don't bring it up by like BSN MSN second degree or helmet. The overall accelerated program. The average GPA 3.5. Again, I promise you make such students under 3.5 every single year. I'm sorry under 3.0 every single year. We deny 4.0's all the time just because they're missing a lot of other stuff, so please just notice that the only thing but the average GPA of the admitted classes are 3.5.
Trelsie Trotman
03:53:44 PM
Is housing available for ABSN students
So the lecture get your lecture classes are probably at a plane closer to 90 to 95 because we do have students that are off sequence or that are taking their time or that I'm often are coming back with transfer students that might join the class because at the finish specific class. So the lectures around 90 students for the clinical sequence for the clinical course the lecture component. The clinical themselves or 8:00 to 1:00.
Except for the last semester virbia sandwiches one arm.
And the lab is 8 to one the non clinical lectures, so like the research course like the I think it's capped at like 65 the case study courses capped at 25 to 30.
There's another one policy could be capped at 50 bioethics can be capped at 50, so bill classes are going to usually be under the 85.
Will you look at the Jerry scores even if they are waived?
Yes, definitely if you've taken the juries and you've got great scores. You first you should make sure you put the actual self reported scores on the actual application. That way we see them and then we will look for your Jerry's for it and attach them to your file. We will not load for the Jerry scores if we don't know too. So if you don't put the Jerry's on your application and you get the waiver. We're not going to look for the juries to add them to your application. If that makes sense. But we definitely will look at their Jerry's if you have them.
In this is the first year we were waving the jury. So I don't know how it's going to be used when we're looking at the competitive applicants.
So you have a bachelors degree from overseas dislocate apply. Yes, for sure, definitely so if you have a bachelors degree from outside the US or Canada definitely apply to the program just have your transcript evaluated by one of the educational services that translate transcript. So like Wes. There's another one, which I forget what it's called but yeah, for sure.
What type of financial aid opportunities are available as a similar to undergrad aid or the options different so that's a great question. They are very different so at Penn financially for undergrad is completely need based aid.
And that's not the case for accelerated so it's a combination of grants. Students will get anywhere from 0 to $40,000 in Grant, which is based completely on financial need. The Accelerated Nursing Scholarship is based on your application as well as other criteria 'cause. We have scholarships that are like very specific. Maybe has to be a Pennsylvania resident board from this year that this year. Other ones leadership skills and qualities. It depends that could be anywhere from zero to 25,000 dollars.
Those are currently the only scholarships be currently offer and then it's the federal loans, which are eligible for the direct loans and then outside loads as well.
And any scholarships wondering you can bring it.
So I'm considering neonatal but I have a high GPA at my current University. Can you explain why the Heidi suits are denied if I do have it?
But we deny sometime because.
We have high we asked him to a high GPA's but they don't have the other piece right so they're not involved. On their campus very limited exposure their personal statement might not really talk about my nursing or white pad. It's a combination of things. It's not just because they have a high GPA that we deny them. I just want to know that if you're not at that 35 mark. It doesn't mean you're not going to get it because we admit between that 28 to 4.0 range and across the board for that, so please. I don't want you to miss understanding.
We do admit it really hot GPS as well. That's why we have an average of 3.5. But we do tonight for them to have a higher GPA's because they're missing other aspects of the application. Maybe their recommendations are in a strong you know it's very competitive pool, so if they've got more limited experience or their personal statement doesn't really address nursing it's harder to.
Be competitive in the field.
OK next question is there after 2 different on campus visit open day. So yes, we are going to have an open house on a Saturday Saturday October 5th.
I think it's a 5th from 9:00 to like 1 it's on line right now, so you can register for the event. It's graduate based but we will have current students there and we also want to have.
Current students are also going to have.
Faculty that are going to talk about a different graduate specialty, so that's one day that you can come we're also going to do a joint information session with Hopkins, an Yale and various cities throughout the country so we're going to be in Philadelphia on September 20th. I'm hoping on Monday or Tuesday that I'll have all of this coaster online on our website and then I'll send a mass email out and you guys are going to get the email because you're in our system because you joined our weapons are so. Often, that out to you so if you're from New York were going to be in New York in September.
We're going to be in Baltimore, gonna be hopefully in LA and San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, North Carolina.
Nashville naming some states cities. We're still trying to figure out but we're going to be traveling a little bit this fall.
Christy Park
03:59:16 PM
If a prerequisite course was taken twice, will you use the higher grade when calculating GPA?
Trelsie Trotman
03:59:17 PM
What is the student to professor Ratio in the ABSN program
Um when I'm flying to the VS MSN program are certain specialties more competitive than others are some specialties more limited in terms of spot so great question running so they are more competitive than others. I would say FNP is the most competitive because it has the highest number of applications so if FMP gets 90 applications.
When it all, which gets like 25 the admit rate is still the same right so you're still admitting like overall, 30% of the pool and sometimes the FMP could have admit rate of 35%, where Women's Health could be 20% depending on the competitiveness of the applicants. So it's really hard to say, but I would say at MP in general is just more competitive because the number of applications that we get for F&P are extremely hot.
The second one would be nurse midwifery an I think this would would freeze competitive because the faculty are looking for a lot more exposure understanding of the role of midwifery and Women's Health reproductive rights. Paula see how it affects practice. A lot more, they want more exposure. They want more understanding of the role versus maybe applying to Pete's primary where you don't have to have that extensive exposure specifically peas right as long as you can kind of address by pizza.
Primary it's fine versus midwifery is going a little bit more. So we are doing a video interview. But some of our faculty may still also.
Take the opportunity to interview it our students via Skype in person zoom. One of those things and I could see midwifery and Women's Health, interviewing their applicants again not just using the video interview. Another program just using the video interview. But there not is not necessarily in terms of spots because the nice. Things are accelerated students. They don't start a Masters program for 2:00 to 3:00 years from when they're interviewing so we're able to map you out into their into the start date so it's usually not an issue.
Usually just really about the overall.
Clinical spots for the BSN portion that probably prevent some students from mean accepted more than the clinical spots for Masters.
I hope that makes sense. I was very roundabout, OK next question. I'm living in Virginia. Can I take the prerequisite courses in my state? Yes, you could take the prerequisite courses at any college Community College or your institution. You could also take them online as long as it is an accredited University or college so we've had student taking classes through Portage learning, which is through Geneva College in California variety of other ones so yes.
Yeah, you can take the prereqs anywhere.
If I'm currently an undergraduate student. Can I only provide academic recommendation letters? Yes, of course. Yes, you're currently in college. You can submit all academic racks actually I think it adds so much more in your application to give stronger academic rats than just you know, maybe like a part time job supervisor for sure. If you've been out of school for over 10 years and you want to submit just supervisor X that's fine as well. You know the students are in that middle range where they've been out for 2 three years, maybe have work experience.
They might want to do more. The balance of the 2:00 to address those years after college but if you're still an undergrad academic is the way to go.
Of course, if you're really involved in research. Then you should have your research supervisor write a recommendation. 'cause they tend to be really, really strong, obviously depending on what research you're doing your relationship. But in general. They seem to be very strong when they come from that aspect, especially if you've been working with them for a year or 2 years. Part time while you're in college. So just think about it if you're worried about People who choose and put a pic and you have too many options or not enough options. Feel free to send me an email and we'll see if I can give you some recommendations.
But it be better, more beneficial to graduate a year earlier or finish on time and continue to work on grades in healthcare experience. Jennifer Oh that's a great question.
I don't know, um you know, I think it really just depends on the student.

Could a rec letter come from a TA who taught a lab?
I think it depends I think it depends on you know if you need that extra time to pull up that GPA if you have no health care experience with survivor or if you haven't been involved on campus at all. That's harder to overcome that's a great questions. Feel free to email me. We can have a conversation about it, but it still personal. I don't. I definitely had to finish in 3 or 3, 1/2 years we've come into the program and they're fine.
If you finished under if you finish early and then you overloaded every semester upier. Arnez involved on campus. So it doesn't that also doesn't help, either. So it's a combination is very individual so feel free to email me.

Prerequisites - under 5 years better for all or some?

Are retaken science courses accepted?
If you're not accepted to the BSN program. The first time you apply does that hurt your chances to apply again. Andrew great question not at all every single year. We usually have a handful. Students who real plot in the program and it's for those reasons, right they didn't have as much exposure. They put enough emphasis on mine are saying they needed to treat that personal statement that they didn't get the right racked so definitely will not hurt your chances. If you re apply to Penn I strongly strongly strongly recommend either within your personal statement.
Or, a separate statement talk about what you've done since you've applied so if you played last year. Maybe you were waitlisted and you're going to reapply this year. You want to talk about what you've done over the year and you want to talk about all the new stuff that you've taken advantage of if your application is identical to last year.
It's harder to be accepted.
OK, so just something then throw out their dependable fight help students bank job placement. They're taking a break between the accelerated in the Masters program. We have a great career service center. Uh pen so we definitely have a career fair. Every December, where you can meet recruiters with the Career Center where you can go and meet maybe alumni from different areas. Truthfully, a lot of our students. Find their jobs through the network that they've created bother in the BSN program meaning.
You're on the hospital floor in Med Surg and you're on now cology floor. You get to know the nurse manager. The clinical instructor and you keep that relationship going and when you see that there's a position available email. You reach out to them and talk to them and kind of get yourself in the door.
But we definitely help we have resources we have graduate and then of course, your own connections from being in the program.
So how do you plan for combined program great question so if you're interested in the Masters with bioethics you would apply to the program, while you're finishing your BSN. So why are in the BSN program you would take you would apply to the measures of bioethics and if accepted the 2:00 departments would sit with you and create a plan of study that you want. So maybe you work, full time as an RN after your BSN and finish your masters and I think part time over 2 years and then you come back full time straight through finish Masters. Maybe you work for 2 straight years.
Then come back under both degree St and, depending on the joint degree that you're doing so like Masters of bioethics. You can take probably one class that can double count while you're just in the BSN portion even before you're accepted if you're thinking about it, possibly 2 additional classes account.
For the BSN program Jerry waiver is my undergraduate degree GPA doesn't include most of my nursing. Prereqs is my GPA overall waited but I still qualify so.
The GPA that we look at is any and all horses. You completed prior to your degree being conford. So let's say you started at Syracuse University for freshman year, but then you transfer to Ithaca.
You would combine those GPA's and we would create your overall GPA but let's say you did, 4 full years. You know at Penn State. You graduated from Penn State. You are a psych major and then you decide you want to go to nursing the courses. You complete after your degree has been completed does not get included into your overall GPA.
I thought they don't have specific should the career goals be in the personal statement just that's a great question.
I think it's up to the application. If you know exactly what you want to do. Feel free to talk about it say. I'm going to do the FNP program. I want to work in an urban environment. I work I want to work in a free clinic.
I am going into women's house. I want to do a colegi work get involved. Do research an ecology in limited Women's Health. Whatever it is if you know, and you have an idea of the specific if you're still trying to figure out you can there. You can also be less specific. You can say. I know nursing for me. I'm not really sure if I would have been advanced practice nurse, but I'm really excited about XY and Z and this is how I see myself and it can be very general or it can be. I know I want to be introspective. I'm leaning towards Pediatrics.
I'm excited to start the BSN program to see where it leads me so if you have specific say no doubt about being put it.
If you're kind of still trying to figure it out you can definitely be Jenna.
But you just want to address you know what you ultimately want to do like I definitely wear your Masters degree. I definitely see myself as an advanced practice nurse. I see myself doing global work. I see myself working in public health, whatever it is it can be kind of general and big overview are confused.
The next question is can the resume be structured like a CB yes, definitely it kind of dish TV does not have to be arresting I might change. That next year, we can put resume or CV, so students know that they can do both.
So what is the process for getting license in California taking the N Plex it's just like any other states, when you finish your BSM at Penn. You pick the state that you want to be licensed in first you get the paperwork from that state. You fill it out pending sent all of their paperwork to that state and then you take the exam. You can take the egg licensee at anywhere in the United States, where you take it doesn't matter. It's where your paperwork is it's very easy. California is a little bit cumbersome. They ask for a lot of crazy information.
All of your college transfix not just your undergraduate DSM one. They want to know you they want your undergrad GPA unity college courses. That's crazy, but we have a lot of graduates from California. I was just looking at Arco, part this year, an it's almost the two Top states of Pennsylvania, California 16 from Pennsylvania in like 15 from California to make up our classes like 85, so you won't have a problem.
Who do I speak about applying so I can speak to about applying so I can complete my pre recs. So you will be a psychology and will need to update all your classes with statistics. I mean, you can email me directly if you have specific questions. You just want if you taking chemistry and biology underground. Maybe you can get credit for it and we have to retake those it could have amp and it was over 5 six years ago, will have to retake those but you can take them anywhere, but feel free to email me as well.
If we enter the adsm program and then decided program with specialty wants pursue how would applications immatriculation work. So basically in spring of the BSN so in this cohort it would be spring of twenty twenty one. You have to submit a new application. You don't have to submit all new material, meaning you pull your old transcripts. We pull your pen transcript. We only require 1 academic recommendation from a pen faculty number. So it could be a clinical faculty. It could be a lab or it could be a lecture.
But a faculty from in the BSN program and it updated updated personal statement. We waive the application fee. And then the very easy easy streamlined process to some matriculate I think the the item. It takes the most time for students is the is the new personal statement after right where they talk about the specialty.
Uhm you mentioned you can apply to the DMP for anesthesia from the a BSN program. Can you expand on that do you need work experience before the program and can you apply for the DMP after BSN MSN program so the nurse anesthesia. DNP is a 3 year program at the end of the 3 years. You are eligible to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist and the degree receive is a DMP we allow our current.
Student if your BSN MSN if your BS and 2nd degree. If you know you want to go into seizure while you're still here. You can apply for some matriculation in the spring.
And it's the same thing, so you would have to apply in the spring semester and then some matriculate into the MST ship program doesn't matter.
If you saw matriculate or not you have to work as an RN in the ICU prior to starting the DNP anesthesia. So you will end up working 2 years. Post VSN before you can come back for the nurse synesthesia, but you've been accepted your spots been homes. You come back. There is a re interview process for anesthesia only for anesthesia. They want to make sure the right critical care experience, 'cause If you don't have the right experience you have to go back.
And work for another year before you can come back so you know, there's little criteria and requirements there.
After the BSN MSN program.
If you want to do nurse anesthesia because you decide to enhance feature you can you would apply the GOP it would probably still be 3 years really going to be a handful of classes that will transfer over if you want to complete the DMP degree the leadership. DMP degree totaly can apply postmasters DMV.
Alright can I take the prerequisites as you pen as a non matriculate ING major after graduation.
Yes, yes. Yes, the let's say you graduate from Penn or one of those you know, Syracuse or wherever you can come to Penn and go through the College of liberal and professional studies. LPF and you can take some of those classes. Those prereq classes, while you're here prior to applying to the program.
Can you please provide some examples of research that ABS sensors can be involved with particularly on global health chronic infectious disease?
Inability Ological Michelle is very question, so I don't know specifically within that range and put in that realm.
Christy Park
04:14:33 PM
You previously mentioned using only grades during undergrad for calculating gpa for admission. If all science prerequisites were taken after matriculation are those grades used too?
You know in that realm what we have going on, but I would say we have students that do research based on their interests. So we have students who are really interesting Pediatrics, they might work with doctor. Digest fats in the Nick you doing, breast milk and working with our World Bank, a world milk bank that we have here they could be working with Richard broader and there's a lot of research work looking at HealthEquity.
There's a lot of opioid addiction research going on. There's research outside of Penn. We have a global Women's Health center that does a lot of research that seems can get involved in obviously we had a whole Department in public health and there's a lot of Interdisciplinary Studies. So you might end up working maybe through school Madison and the school public health, the faculty member that spoke nursing and.
Mexico so you I would recommend like just Googling our website to see what pops which researcher it pops and that's the one you would want to reach out to talk to.
We also seem to do like also like the history of Nursing Research. It doesn't all have to be like clinical. But definitely if Penn Nursing doesn't have it pass it and hopefully you'll have access to getting involved with that.
If a prerequisite next question Christie if a prerequisite course was taken twice will you use the higher grade one calculating GPA? Yes, so it depends if you're pretty right course if you took the course twice. We're going to look at the more recent course and it doesn't necessarily get calculated into the GPA if you completed it. After your degree if you completed prior to your degree being confirmed we would include it in there.
What is the student professor ratio a BSN program?
I mean, technically the universe with school. It's like 4 to one, but you're never going to class for students so I would say the lecture component is 85 to 95 students labs and clinicals or 8:00 to 1:00 and then our non clinical lectures are anywhere from twenty five students to 65 students.

I have a specific question about whether my Introduction to Chem + Lab course meets your prerequisite. If I send you a course description with a syllabus, is that something you are able to review before submitting my application?
Brianna Williams
04:16:23 PM
If a biology or chemistry course was taken more than 5 years ago, will I have to retake it?
Tender app letter come from a TA who taught a lab. Yes, if they know you really well and they can really address your abilities. It's perfectly fine, especially if it comes across you know 'cause you don't want someone to write go rack that doesn't really know you and that's very generic recommendation it doesn't hurt you. But it doesn't add anything reading are really good rock and kind of move your app from competitive to definite admit from borderline to competitive so those Rex can definitely make a difference. So definitely someone who knows you even if it's a TA.
Prerequisites under 5 years better for all or some prerequisites. It's best anatomy, Physiology might grow within the 5:00 to 6:00 year. Mark everything else under 10.
Is that we do make exceptions for cannobio nutrition sometimes fax over 10 years just depends on the application?
Jessica Barnett
04:17:19 PM
Thank you very much for answering our questions! I have to leave the seminar now but this was very helpful!
You mentioned you previously mentioned using only grapes during undergrad or crackling GPA for admissions. All science prerequisite courses were taking after articulation. Mart regulation are those grades used to so.

Was in a previous accelerated direct entry program. Left the program in good standing - had to work due to husband's immigration status - have a letter from Dean of that school verifying good standing and would accept me if I returned. I feel a bsn is a better fit for me - will this hurt my chances on this program?
The undergrad GPA is one aspect of your application, then we literally pull out our prerequisite courses and look at them, each individually. So we will say chemistry. This is the great and you'll see it on the application. We actually ask you to fill it out. Chemistry bio anatomy, Physiology, micro stats. Nutrition need to look specifically at those grades so even if it's not incorporated. Please know we look at them extremely closely and they're probably more important, especially those recent courses that sometimes you know courses you took.

I have to leave as well. Thank you so much!
Next question Olivia I have a specific question about whether my intiqam course meets your Prereqs If I set the course description with syllabus. That's something we can review it. Sometimes we can't say for sure. Sometimes students have weird class name and we can't approve it officially via email. But we can give you a sense. If we think it might be a problem, but feel free to email us no problem.

Can you elaborate a little bit on the personal statement? I haven't worked in healthcare, but I do work as a Receptionist in a Nursing Home and interact with Memory Care patients often. I also live with and look after my grandmother. Would those things be of interest to you? I know I want to go into OR Nursing because surgery is my passion!

Thanks so much for your answers. They are very helpful.
OK, so it's bio and Chem were taken weather 5 years do I have to retake it. No.
If you're hitting like if you had 20. We have to talk about it, you probably have to redo it. If we're talking like 10 to 15. I think you might be OK. It really just depends how long about you took them, but no if it's under 10 years old do not retake chemistry and biology. Even 11 or 12 don't retake it. But you can always eat mouse double check.

Thank you for your time and all of your help!
So I was in a previous accelerated direct entry program left the programming with standing had to work do. The husbands immigration status. Oh, that's great. Yes, yes, so if you were in a previous accelerated program. Even we have students that were had started PT programs. Pharmacy Med School. Honestly, a letter from the school from a professor. The demon academic person advisor from the school, saying that you were in good standing and that it was just.
A choice that was made because you changed your mind. In terms of your specialty life hotline. Whatever those are huge exceptions and it won't hurt you within the pro.
Alessandra Anderson
04:20:24 PM
If you don't know what specialty you want to pursue, do you recommend just applying to the ABSN or can you still apply to the BSN/MSN? I know you mentioned you can come back within 5 years of completing the BSN to complete the MSN. Can you elaborate on that a little more?
Shanique Spence
04:20:26 PM
If I am missing one prerequisite class such as chemistry, can I take that course while in the program or do I have to have all prerequisites before applying ?
Uhm Kareena Hyperlite look at that see here can you elaborate a little bit on their personal statement I haven't worked in health care, but I do work as a receptionist in a nursing home and interact with memory care patients often. I also live with, and look up to my grandmother with those things be of interest to you. Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely so I mean, so here you know your job is in clinically focused but you are constantly exposed to the healthcare field So what I would do is when you're not working so if you could spend.
Are you maybe could do it while you're working entirely? Sure, it worked. You know spent the day with one of the nurses or the nurse practitioners and just kind of go around and see what their roles and responsibilities are in the nursing home. You can talk about being a caregiver to your family member. You can talk about going to the health care if they've been hospitalise you can talk about the care and the difference of care you could talk about your exposure to good quality care versus not the interaction of the different health care professionals and talk about why nursing for you, I mean that's really good experience and exposure.
So it's all about how you high like that in the actual application.
Um Alessandra asked if you don't know what specialty you want to pursue do you recommend to supply trivia center? Can you self? I mean you can mention that you completed after the BS time? Can you elaborate on that a little more So what I usually tell student if you are 80% sure of population, meaning I know. I want adult. I wanna work with the jobs. I want to work with Gerald. I want to work with Pi want to work exclusively with that when I work exclusively with pregnant women if you have an idea of population.
As well as Saddam like I see myself in a hospital environment. You see myself outpatient. I want to work with healthy patients and keep them healthy. I wanted to public health whatever it is if you have an idea of those populations and settings apply. DSN understand 'cause you can you can request a change of specialty and you could also out of the work first for a couple of years to confirm if you're still unsure of your specialty. But if you really are not sure and you like everything. I love with the elderly. I love pediatric. Oh my God. I love the hospital, but I could see myself.
You know working in a clinic uhm you know in the middle of nowhere, Montana and being the sole care provider for 20 acres. If you heard about it all over the place for 20 miles. You can be all over the place. I would stick with second degree. Once you're here applied at the Masters and it's almost as if you came in.
Next question if I'm missing 1 correct music class such as chemistry. Can I take that course well in the program or do I have to have all the prerequisites before applying?
You know you could take you can apply while completing your prerequisite courses. So chemistry has to be completed before June 2020, but you can apply this fall as long as you ensure that completed best management.
Its final pharmacy just one class.
My God, you guys had such great questions any other last minute questions for me.
