Welcome to today's webinar. My name is Jamie Bergstein. I'm the associate director of graduate admissions and marketing at Penn nursing. Here, just a few housekeeping tips for our webinar today. Please use a desktop or laptop computer with Chrome or Firefox to fully participate in the session. Some event features and audio will be available on mobile devices or other browsers.
We can't troubleshoot during the presentation, so if you all of a sudden can't hear, just try refreshing. It usually works after a refresh.
Please save your questions for the end of the presentation. There will be a Q&A.
A recording of this presentation will be available in a few days, so if you do have to leave or want to come back and listen, you will get that link in a few days.
And to enable closed captioning, click the CC button on the top right so it is highlighted in green and you'll be able to see the closed captioning.
Here's what we're going to go over today. We are focusing on our graduate programs, so if you are interested in our accelerated BSN program, we won't be talking about that today. There is a webinar on that program later this week.
Will be talking about our MSN Indian P programs.
We will have a webinar on our PhD program later this year.
Application requirements and tips. Some financial aid information.
First, we have our MSN programs which are are nurse practitioner programs. We have eight clinically focused nurse practitioner programs that after graduation, you'll be prepared to sit for the national certification exam in that population area.
Charmaine Lock
12:06:30 PM
Yes
Our advanced specialist program in nurse midwifery is a dual major, so upon completion you'll be able to sit for.
The certification exam for the certified nurse midwives, an Women's Health nurse practitioner certification program.
All of our nurse practitioner programs start off with the core curriculum. We like to call the three peas pathophysiology, pharmacology, and physical assessment will also take theory courses specific to your population. An complete clinical rotations, clinical rotations are organized by the school, so that's one less thing you have to worry about. You will do your clinicals in Pennsylvania as well as potentially New Jersey and Delaware.
So you will need to be licensed in Pennsylvania by the time you start your clinical rotations and maybe New Jersey and Delaware.
All of the individual classes and curriculum plans are available on our website, so if you want to see the specific courses you are required to take, you can go to the academics portion of our website and click on your program of interest.
Lastly, we have two non clinical administration programs, one health leadership and when nursing and Healthcare administration that focus on areas such as project management, healthcare consulting and nursing education.
Many people ask which program is right for me.
Some of you might know the exact population acuity level you want to work with. Some of you are just starting to look into that, so the graphic we're looking at is the APR end consensus model, which states the focus of care is based on the patient needs, not the clinical setting. So, for example, if you become a pediatric primary care nurse practitioner, you can only work in the pediatric population in the primary care setting.
If you become an adult, gerontology acute care nurse practitioner, he could only work with the adult population and an acute care setting.
It doesn't restrict you to specific areas such as inpatient versus outpatient, and you can specialize in certain areas such as oncology or palliative care, but your scope of practice is based on the population and a cutie level.
We also have a variety of minors. Most are only three classes, but keep in mind that some MSN programs only have one elective space or do not offer any electives. So if you're interested in a minor, it might add extra time to your program.
Some offer preparation for a certification exam, for example, are adult oncology minor or transformative nursing education, minor and others are just designed to increase your knowledge.
Anne, I've linked to our website where you can see the curriculum information for our miners.
Are MSN programs can be completed on a full time or part time basis? About 2/3 of our students are doing the MSN program part time, so it is a doable option to work part time and go to school part time. If you plan on rolling part time, you can start in any semester, which is the spring mid January summer which is late May.
Or fall which is late August or early September if you're interested in enrolling full-time. Certain programs start during certain semesters, so either the summer or fall. So again, keep that in mind when you are applying. If you wanted to go full time, you can only start in a specific term.
Our acute care programs require at least one year of work experience in that population area. Are neonatal program requires at least two years of work experience in a Level 3 Nikki or higher?
All work experience should be calculated after orientation or any probationary period.
Um, for primary care programs. While work experience is not required, it is strongly preferred.
The strongest applicants typically have at least one to two years of work experience.
For all applicants at least one to two years of work experience is beneficial to you when we are reviewing applications, we can certainly tell that the stronger and more well rounded applicants do have work experience.
Are nurse anesthesia program is at the DNP level? It is full time only an it is 3 years. You can enter with your BSN. You don't need an additional Masters degree and we're currently admitting about a year and a half in advance so fall 2020 applicants so people who are applying this year will apply for summer 2022.
The 2021 cohort is already full. There is a work experience requirement. You need to have a minimum of two years at the time of enrollment in ICU or critical care, working with the most critically ill patients. There are some areas that we don't accept, which are the neonatal ICU, emergency room, recovery room, step down units, and Interventional radiology. All other areas we do accept.
Even though we require a minimum of two years, again, the strongest applicants typically have more work experience. I'd say very strong applicants have at least three or four years of work experience.
The curriculum is fully integrated between your didactic horses, your clinical rotations, annuar simulation classes. There's the anesthesia component, which is your didactic in clinical classes as well as the DMP component so you do have to complete a DMP project at the end of your program as well. These are all woven together, so instead of doing a year and a half of classroom and then in a year and a half of clinical.
It is all woven throughout your three years.
In the anesthesia program, they operate on a primary site model, so.
You choose a home base where you return to after you go through your specialty rotations and your other rotations. So this allows you to build a relationship with a specific clinical site and showcase the skills that you've learned throughout your other rotations similar to our MSN programs. You'll do clinicals in New Jersey, Pennsylvania. Of course, we even have a clinical site at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
These are the application requirements for MSN and anesthesia programs. I will go over this in another few slides. Just wanted to show you what the requirements are right now.
We also offer a postmasters DNP.
This is offered on a part time basis only. A man it's two years long. It's postmasters, as the name implies. So you do need to have a Masters in nursing. It can be a clinical so you can be an advanced practice nurse, but it can also be a Masters in education or administration, but it needs to be a Masters in nursing.
The Post Masters DNP is focused on innovation Amman the an developing skills in translating research into practice and implementing innovation to change practice and improve care delivery in your organization or within the population area that you're interested in.
The curriculum is 100% online. There is an on campus intensive in late August that coincides with orientation.
Lisa Mundy
12:15:55 PM
Good morning.
And there is a strong emphasis on faculty, mentor ship and cohort building because of the online component.
This is the curriculum, so there is a core curriculum designed to give you a well rounded view of innovation and implementation. And then of course your project courses to help you complete a DMP project.
And these are the application requirements for the postmasters DNP program. Fairly similar to our MSN program.
I want to highlight a few, a few few advantages. Up a few pluses of coming to Penn. As I said earlier, one of the advantages is we guarantee you a clinical spa upon admission for our clinical programs. So instead of you having to worry about where to complete your clinicals, we have done that for you.
Again, as I've mentioned, In addition to Pennsylvania, you may also be doing clinicals in New Jersey and Delaware.
We have a strong community focus. Uhm, we are located in West Philadelphia, so we have many clinicals and programs in that area. Many of our other clinicals focus on the medically underserved. Studying the social determinants of Health is woven throughout the curriculum, not just in the Clinicals. And there's a lot of collaboration between Penn Nursing in Philadelphia. We understand the unique position that we're in and where we're located.
And our faculty and students and staff do a lot of organizing and programs to reach out to the Greater Philadelphia community. There are many national and international opportunities from our students for our students. Some programs have partnerships with clinical sites around the country, and even the world TBD on this due to the current state of affairs. But in the past, for example, students in the midwifery program.
Have completed clinical rotations in New Zealand, Somalia, and Trinidad and Tobago. There are also short term programs as well for students. For example, during their spring break or winter breaks. There's a strong focus on leadership and scholarship among our programs.
And there's also a strong emphasis on research. Our students have the opportunity to develop manuscripts for publication. An attendant, even present at conferences. We are not just training you to be advanced practice nurses or DMP prepared nurses or training you to be scholarly leaders in your community are programs also encourage students to be involved in policy and legislation. So, for example, every year our students had to the state capital to advocate.
On behalf of fellow nurses and patients, I will say during this time where there's been an increase of need on our medical professionals are students and alumni have absolutely stepped up to the plate. Really, anytime in the news that they spoke about Philadelphia, it was from a pet nursing alumni, which is just really wonderful to hear about the impact our students and alumni are making.
Now I want to get into some application tips and tricks.
The first one is start your application early so the application for 2021 isn't open yet. It will be available in early July. I recommend you starting it even if you don't plan on applying to later this year. Starting the application early allows you the most time to submit a competitive application. It's a lot easier to fix any errors you might have. We always get people trying to submit at the last minute, and they realized that they missed something.
It's much easier to fix all of that if you start early, even if you don't plan on submitting right away.
All programs require a resume. We don't have a preference for format or length requirement. Most applicants submit a want two page resume. The application process is holistic and your resume is one case to showcase. Excuse me, your resume is one way to showcase all aspects of you.
Kalkidan Kidane
12:20:54 PM
iis this the direct entry for bsn to msn
These are just some examples of what to list on your resume. This is not an exhaustive list, so you certainly should list all professional experience even if nursing is your second career.
And you did. You had another career before that? But there are relevant jobs that you held. You can certainly list that volunteer experience, extracurricular activities, honors, and awards highlighting any leadership experience. Research. If you were clinical Instructor Preceptor, any significant hobbies. And again, this is not an exhaustive list of what to include on your resume.
Each program requires a few essays, so just some basics.
As a plead to myself, who reads almost every graduate application, make sure it's easy to read that it's double space that it's a 12 point readable font. I certainly appreciate it. It it goes along way, otherwise there's no real formatting preference, no font preference or anything like that. Proofread, proofread, proofread, proofread, one or two spelling or grammatical errors won't drastically affect your application, believe me.
A lot of people right? How excited they are to be applying to Penn State.
It's a different school, but a well written essay can go a long way in the application process, so make sure to give it a once or twice over.
You may have friends or family look at your essay and that's fine they might put in some edits and track changes but once they're done with suggestions make sure you remove those track changes these will upload into the application annual be unable to change your essay once submitted and then to emphasize just preview your essay once uploaded in case there are tracked changes or other errors what you see in the application up once uploaded is what I see as well.
In terms of content, we really want to know the why. Why are you applying to this program out of all other programs? And why are you applying to pen out of all other schools, the strongest essays often are not the most heart wrenching stories or come from the most seasoned nurses there. The ones I can clearly articulate their passions, goals and reasons for applying to this program for wanting to become an advanced practice nurse.
For wine to get there DNP.
I'll make sure to do your research. Make sure the program you're applying to is relevant to your interests and goals.
And if you're applying to the postmasters DMP program, we do ask to discuss your project proposal. You don't need to know your project from start to finish. That's the whole point of doing this program. But we do want to see that you have knowledge in potentially implementing a project and the area that you're interested in working in.
We require 3 letters of recommendation, although you can submit up to five.
We do like to see at least one academic reference. We understand applicants have been out of school for a significant amount of time. May not have access to an academic reference, and that's OK. It doesn't have to be a professor, or it could be an advisor or research assistant, and older references, or certainly acceptable. We want one recommendation from your current supervisor, and then professional is someone who knows you in a different professional capacity.
So overall, for recommendations were looking for quality, not name recognition or Penn Alumni, it's great. If you know the Dean or CEO or seeno or someone high up, but if they can only write a paragraph or something very general, that doesn't really do anything for us. We'd much rather see someone whose name we don't recognize who can write a really strong applicated strong recommendation for you. It should build upon other aspects of your application and shouldn't just be a recap of your resume.
Your recommendation can also emphasize strengths and weaker parts of your application. So for example, if you struggle during your academic program but you did really well in one class, you could have a professor right about how well you did. If you have a lack of work experience, you could write from your supervisor about how fantastic you are in your job.
And even though we do allow up to five recommendations, as long as you have three, that's OK. It doesn't make a difference if you submit 4 or 5. Three strong recommendations are much better than five mediocre recommendations. And Lastly, we only accept academic or professional recommendations. Do not submit personal recommendations every year we get a sister in law who went.
To pen or the parents friends who works at Penn Medison but doesn't know you it it really makes a difference, so make sure to submit an academic or professional recommendation only.
We do require jirari scores, but in many instances the Jerry scores can be waived. If your BSN GPA is a cumulative GPA 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or you have a Masters degree with a cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale an these must be from institutions in the United States or Canada.
We do not recalculate GPS. We don't round up, we don't consider additional coursework outside of your bachelors degree. So whatever it says on your transcript is what we're going by. A 3.1999 is not a 3.2.
The waiver will be applied after you submit your application and it's processed by our office. There is nothing you need to do unless you're missing any application information.
If you need to take the jirari, competitive applicants typically score in the.
50th percentile on both the verbal and quantitative sections and a four on the analytical writing section and the GRE is not required for the postmasters DNP program.
We do require the tofel or I'll see if you are a non native English speaker or if your undergraduate degree was not conducted in English.
Uh, we just need one and we don't have a preference for which one and their requirements are on the screen.
We require transcripts from your BSN program and all additional degrees or coursework completed so if your BSN program is your second degree, if you have a Masters degree. If you took course work over the summer one year, we need transcripts from all of that. Unofficial transcripts are accepted and strongly encouraged during the application. Official transcripts are.
Only required if you are admitted, so save your time, save your money and if you're able to just upload an unofficial transcript during the application process.
If you attended school outside of the United States, your transcripts must be evaluated through Wes or CGFNS.
Other miscellaneous application items.
Uh, we need your RN or a PRN license if you have one. Upload whatever you're issued a skin of your physical copy. A screenshot of the online certificate. Whatever you have is fine. Again, you will need a Pennsylvania license by the time you start the clinical sequence.
International applicants, if you don't have a Pennsylvania license, but you are licensed to practice in another country, you must complete the CGFNS certification program. There's more information about that on our website.
We do require a statistics class for all of our programs that just needs to show up on your transcript. There's nothing additional you need to do for that. An interview is by invitation only. We will contact you.
I just want to check in is everyone still able to hear me?

OK I am just going to briefly touch on tuition and financial aid. I am not a financial aid counselor. We have wonderful financial aid counselors available to you. There are available at financial aid at nursing.upenn.edu. I'd just want to give you some general information since it really does vary by program, by enrollment status and of course your own.
So in very generally, your program costs depend on how many course units you take per semester. The average course at Penn is worth one course unit an it's equal to four semester hours.
These are the 2020 to 2021 tuition and fees up so there is a separate summer rate from this fall and spring and an estimated budget is available on our website.
We do offer some scholarships for our students. We have need and merit based awards for our full time students. We do participate in the post 911 yellow ribbon program so if you are a veteran or active duty military you are able to use those benefits. We have a fellowship for return peace core volunteers.
If anyone here is an employment.
Employee of Penn Medison that's any Penn Medison Hospital in Princeton. Lancaster Health. We have a program that In addition to any benefits you receive from Penn Medison, if you take three classes in the calendar year, the next, the 4th class in that same year will be free. So that's In addition to any benefits you are see through Penn Nursing.
And that's for MSN Andean P students as well.
There are a variety of loan options an we've linked some popular ones that our students take out. There are public public loans or private loans, federal loans. It really just depends what's best for your situation. Some take out federal loans, some students find that private loans offer a better interest rate for them, so it is really up to you. And again, are financially. Counselors are happy to walk you through that and help you understand the.
The different options for loans.
For federal loans, there are several repayment options. There is the public service loan forgiveness program an. There's also specific repayment programs for nursing education loans where they will pay for your education and you work in a certain area or certain kind of Organization for a few years and they repair loans. So again something to keep in mind.
That there are options out there for a loan repayment.
And Lastly, our application deadlines.
So far MSN programs there are a few different deadlines. If you are interested in applying full time, the deadline is November 1st, 2020. That's no matter what semester your program will start in the full time deadline is 20 November 1st, 2020 for part time. If you want to start in the spring.
Uh, which is January. Don't forget that deadline is October 15th, 2020.
If you're interested in enrolling part time, summer fall, that deadline isn't until March 15th, 2021.
Are nurse anesthesia program the deadline is November 1st, 2020 and remember we are admitting for 2022.
An our deadline for the postmasters DNP program is November 1st, 2020. We have one decision or excuse me. One deadline for your specific program or enrollment term, but decisions are offered on a rolling basis. So once the deadline hits we will start reviewing applications.
You might hear back in two weeks. You may have a colleague who applied and they might not hear back for two months. Uhm, so we review applications on a rolling basis. When you hear has no bearing on the strength or any part of your application, the nurse anesthesia program does. Following more traditional application review where they release pretty much all of their decisions at the same time.
And on our website is estimates of one of the latest you can hear back regarding your application is.
OK, um I am going to take a sip of water and allow you to please type your questions into the chat box. Try and answer as many as we can. We do ask that you stick to more general questions and happy to answer specific questions offline.

12:36:53 PM
my program was pass no pass but my GPA is 4.0 how will that be calculated?
How do you calculate pass no pass GPA? I assume this is for a BSN program or academic program. I'm in that case you wouldn't have a GPA. Uhm, I would.
Include, uhm, usually there's a transcript guide that comes with your transcript that explains the grading system, so I would make sure to include that in your transcript upload.

When would you suggest to obtain other state licenses after admission or before? Uhm, I you don't really need to start until after admission. Uhm, you usually don't have clinicals right away, so you do have some time. So after admission is fine.

Nurse practitioners a more advanced practice nurses who are in that area. I know shadowing might be hard right now, but you could still have a conversation with them. Ask them what they like, what they don't like, perhaps how they chose that role in that population. You're also welcome to reach out to our program faculty. All of the contact information is available on the individual pages, and they can also help talk about.
The different aspects in population acuity level within that program.
For the nurse anesthesia program is the requirement for at least two years experience. By the time you apply or the admission date, that would be the admission date.

What is the process for applying for a minor? There isn't a process we do ask. If you're interested on the application, but it's not binding. That's just to gauge interest. That's just something you declare. Once you're a student here.

Do you know the general average GPA for acceptance within the pediatric primary or acute masters program?
How is kovid impacted the clinical rotations? That's a great question. Unfortunately, it has severely impacted clinical rotations. Uh, more hospitals for the most part, we're not allowing students, which is understandable since they were trying to keep the rate of infection down. We've done some on line simulations to try and keep skills and whatnot up, and then we will be.
Front loading up in person clinicals. Once the hospitals start to re open to students.

12:42:09 PM
How long does the part time and full time MSN programs generally take to complete?
How long is the NP and mental health program and what is the competition? The mental, the psychiatric mental health program is 14 months full-time. The lengths of all our programs are available on our website and for all of our programs. We have around a 30 to 40% in mission rate.
Can students work part time to fulfill the work experience requirement while enrolled in an MSN program? You do need to have the work experience by the time.
You apply, um, if maybe you know you're a few months short, that's OK, but you do need to have that work experience.
You're applying for the psych NP. You currently live in New York? Do you need to have a Pennsylvania nursing license? Yes, because you will be doing clinicals in Pennsylvania and is completion of this program. Grab me the ability to practice in New York as a psych NP. Yep, so you'll be eligible to for all of our programs to take the national certification exam for that specific area. There might be state specific requirements, which is something you.
Need to look into as a resident of New York, but you'd be eligible to practice based on completion or the pass of that national exam.
If you are an entrepreneur, are there alternatives recommendations?

Randy Malsky
12:44:03 PM
Can I submit my application prior to having a Penn RN license due to already having a RN license?
For MSN programs, I understand the GPA requirements is between a 3.2 or 4.0. I'm currently in accelerated BSN program. Will my undergraduate GPA be considered or my accelerated or just my accelerated BSN GPA so we have a holistic application process. We look at your entire application. Certainly we're going to be focusing on nursing and science courses 'cause those directly impact your.
Potential ability in the MSN program. But we are looking at all aspects of your application and your entire application history.
What's the process for the MSN PhD program? So you would need to apply to both programs separately.
From the neonatal program, if I don't have experience, the Nick you, but I have experienced in the ICU. Can I apply? No, you need to have at least two years experience in a Level 3 Nikki or higher.
If you've been out of school for a long period of time with suggestion, suggestion can be used for the academic reference. One example is perhaps you've done in quality improvement project or a research project. Any organization, someone who supervise you in that area would be a great person to write that recommendation. If there is anyone who could potentially comment on your academic ability, your intellectual ability, that would.
That would also be great.

For FNP, how is Neonatal ICU experience going to affect my application?
The general someone's asking about the average GPA within the pediatric primary or acute care programs. The average GPA across all of our programs is around a 3.5.
How long does the part time and full time MSN programs generally take to complete on full time? Are most of our programs are 12 to 14 months on the SMP programme is 16 months full time and the Midwest free programs about a year and a half part time you have up to five years to complete. Most students will do it.
Um, there's a few questions asking for our primary care programs. What kind of work experience should you have? They prefer any work experience. Certainly come in that specific population area can help, but any kind of work experience is helpful. So for example, person asking for the psych NP program is ICU experience. OK, absolutely.

Can I submit my application prior to having a Pennsylvania RN license due to already having an RN license? Yes, you only need your Pennsylvania license if you enroll in the program. You don't need it to apply.
Graduated from a Canadian accredited school, so you'll need to have your transcripts. I'm evaluated by one of the transcript evaluation program, so either Wes or CGF&S.

For the Family NP program, there was no requirement for the RN work experience although work experience is strongly recommended. As a current senior BSN student who is finishing her last semester, I would only have a few months of work experience by the time of Fall start. Is it possible to be admitted and work as a RN while attending school part time to fulfill recommended work experience?

Uhm, an uh, a lot of diversity in terms of background and thought at Penn Nursing. what is the GPA average for the Health administration program
For the family and P program on, there's no.
Requirement for RN work am, although it's strongly recommended as a current senior BSN student who is finishing her last semester, I'd only have a few months of work experience by the time of false start. Is it possible to be admitted and work as an RN while attending school part time to fulfill the recommended work experience? Ohm, yes, that is possible. Uhm.
Again, we do have applicants for a primary programs that enroll right after their undergraduate program, but if you but we strongly recommend work experience and if you feel that working part time and going to school part time will help benefit you, then absolutely.
Does the si RNA program, except applicants that already have an MSN? Yes, we have had applicants who have a Masters degree. I if it's an advanced practice degree, I would certainly explain why you are going from one advanced practice to the other.
To confirm, you said unofficial transcripts are OK. Yes, they are OK. We strongly recommend submitting unofficial transcripts during the application process.
I've been a nurse for a long time, but will be completing my BSN degree this fall. What GPA would I be reporting when applying? I'm you should report your BSN degree.
Um Aaron, thanks for confirming. I'm so for the post Masters programs.
It depends on your prior coursework. It usually is a mix of didactic or clinical and clinical courses.
If you there is a specific email for the pizza, cute care and the you needle program on their website so you can email them and they can kind of go over more, what a potential plan of study would be. If you can find that, just shoot us an email and I'm happy to direct you.
And again, the average GPA for MSN programs is around a 3.5.
