My name is Jamie Bergstein. I'm the Associate Director of graduate admissions and marketing here at Penn Nursing. Thank you all for taking the time today to learn about our programs.
It's a few housekeeping tips. We recommend using a laptop or desktop computer with Chrome or Firefox to fully participate in the session.
Some of the event features and audio won't be available on mobile devices or other browsers were unable to troubleshoot during the session, so if you have problems, usually the best thing to do is restart or try switching browsers.
I ask that you save all questions for the end of the presentation.
A recording of this presentation will be available in a few days.
So you are always welcome to come back and listen.
And to enable closed captioning.
You'll see a small button in the top right that says see see if you highlight it in green closed captioning will be enabled in the chat box.
This is what we're going over today. Will be talking about our MSN programs in RDN, pee in Nursing, Estesia
will mostly focus on the application requirements and some tips and tricks.
Will touch briefly on financial aid considerations and then Lastly and with a Q&A.
On the screen are our MSN programs.

We have several nurse practitioner programs across the lifespan and an advanced specialist program which is our nurse midwifery program.
Alison Nugent
12:06:19 PM
hello, Cleveland
All of our programs lead you to the ability to take the certification exam in that area. So at the end you'll be a certified nurse practitioner in that population in Acuity level.
All of our nurse practitioner programs start with the three peas or core curriculum, pathophysiology, pharmacology, an physical assessment.
You'll also take a research course theory courses in your population area, and of course clinical rotations. We also have two administration programs. Health leadership in one in nursing and Healthcare administration that focus on leadership administration. Management policy.
We're often asked which program is right for me. Some of you may know exactly what program you're interested in. Others are still deciding between different populations and acuity levels.
Evan Anderson

Hello, Boston, MA
The APR end consensus model came out a little over 10 years ago to standardize care across the United States and the focus of care is now based on patient needs, not the clinical setting. So if you become a pediatric primary care nurse practitioner, you can only work with patients in the pediatric population in a primary care setting. This doesn't mean you're limited to inpatient or outpatient, it just means.
You are restricted in the population and acuity level that you can take care of.
There's a lot more information on their website and this chart.
Does a good job of explaining uhm, what you're focus can be, but this is just a baseline to help you figure out possibly what population acuity level you might be interested in.
We also have a variety of minors available. Some of our programs have room for electives, others do not. So just keep this in mind that a minor could potentially be adding time to your program. Some do lead to national certification, such as the adult oncology minor. Others are just available to help you expand your knowledge. Most miners are only about three to four classes, so if you do have a program that
does have room for electives, this is a great opportunity.
All of our MSN programs can be completed on a full time or part time basis. About 2/3 of our MSN students are completing a program part time, so it is a very popular option to work and complete a MSN program part time.
If you're interested in part time enrollment, you can start in any semester, which is spring would starts in mid January, summer, which starts in late may or fall, would starts in late August or early September if you're interested in going full time, you'll need to pay attention to your specific program as some start in summer and some start in the fall.
All of our acute care programs require at least one year of work experience in that area. The neonatal program requires at least two years of work experience in a Level 3 Nikki or higher. All work experience should be calculated after orientation or any probationary period. Our primary care programs don't require work experience, however, we do like to see R and work experience.
Um, in any field that doesn't have to be in that area. Competitive applicants typically have at least one or two years of work experience at the time of application and the average applicant is entering with three years of work experience.
The next program will talk about is RDNP in nurse anesthesia. This is only offered on a full time basis. It is 3 years long. You can enter with a BSN. You don't need an advanced degree or Masters degree.
And this is important to pay attention to. We are currently emitting about 1 1/2 years in advance, so this years applicants are applying for summer 2022. The 2021 application is closed and that cohort is already filled. So if you are applying this year, you won't enter until summer 2022.
There is a work experience requirement. You do need to have at least two years after any orientation period in an ICU or critical care environment. Working with the most critically ill patients. By the time of enrollment, most competitive applicants typically have at least two to three years of work experience by time of application. There are several areas that do not count towards the work experience requirement and that.
They are the neonatal ICU emergency room recovery room. Step down units, an interventional radiology.
The nurse anesthesia curriculum is a little different from the MSN program since it is at the DNP level. You're fully integrated between your didactic clinical and simulation courses, so it's not a year and a half of didactic classes, and then a year and a half of clinical rotations and the DMP component is woven throughout the curriculum as well.
Clinicals also work a little differently. The nurse anesthesia program operates on a primary site model which allows students to be mentored an you have a home base, so you return to this primary clinical site when you're not rotating throughout your specialty rotations.
And these are the application requirements for both the MSN in nursing estesia application. We will go over this in a little bit.
But first I want to touch on the pen advantage. Why are you applying to pen and what makes it so special? So first our our clinical placements. Most importantly, we organize your clinical rotations for you, so that's one less thing you need to worry about. We guarantee you a clinical spot iponan mission so you don't have to find your own clinicals can be in Pennsylvania.
New Jersey or Delaware. So you will need at least a Pennsylvania license by the time you apply and potentially New Jersey and Delaware are clinical placements often focus on the medically underserved and we try and find a diverse and robust clinical placements for all of our programs.
There is a huge community focus.
Course between our students and faculty and staff, but also the larger Philadelphia community. We are located in West Philadelphia and we feel the need to help serve those residents by being part of the community. So, for example, the past few years, the school has organized a womans health day in West Philadelphia where faculty, students and staff volunteer for a day to help bring health care.
Two residents of West Philadelphia and also provide education for them as well.
David John Angeles

Hello everyone from NY!
There are national and international opportunities that students can be involved with. Many students are able to complete a clinical rotation around the country or even around the world. There are also short term abroad opportunities, either through spring break or over summer break, of course.
Those are certainly on pause right now and we will have to see how that works with the coming year, but hopefully we can resume those wonderful opportunities very soon. There is a strong emphasis on research throughout all of our programs. You don't need to be a doctoral student to engage in research. All of our MSN and EMP students do take a research class an we really want you to be prepared to speak about an area that you're passionate in.
Many of our students produce work that eventually gets published in journals and other publications, or they present their findings at different conferences. And Lastly, we are preparing you to be leaders, not just nurse practitioners or nurse a nest assist. We really want you to be leaders in your community. We want you to advocate for yourselves for fellow nurses for your patience and many of our students get involved in policy and advocacy.
For example, there is always a lobby day on the capital in Harris Burgh, and many of our students will take a trip every year to help lobby for fills, an issues that are important to them and their fellow nurses and patients.
Now I want to talk about some application tips and tricks.
First start your application early. The application is available. It opens July 1st, starting the application early allows you the most time to submit a competitive application and it's also easier to fix errors if you give yourself plenty of time. So I just remember I just recommend opening up the application. You don't need to submit anytime soon. The very first deadline isn't until October 15th, but look through it, get a feel for what you need to do. There's a lot of questions you'll need to write essays, request recommenders.
So giving yourself plenty of time will help you fix any errors or last minute things that you need to. People always ask when is the best time to submit.
I would submit as early as possible, but not until you've completed the strongest application you feel you can. Again, there's no rush. You have a few months, but giving yourself time to work on it and then submitting early allows you to not really worry about it in case anything should come up closer to the deadline.

Every application is required to submit a resume. There's no format preference for the resume most or one to two pages long.
On the screen is a non exhaustive list of things you can include. We have a holistic application process an your resume is one way to showcase all the wonderful aspects of yourself. So some recommended items are all professional experience and even if nursing is your second career, if you have any relevant experience prior to nursing or you just want to include that in your resume, you can certainly do so.
Volunteer experiences and extracurricular activities. Any honors and awards you've received. Highlighting, leadership experience and research experience. If your clinical instructor Preceptor and any significant hobbies you can feel free to include on your resume.
Each program requires a few essays.
So first we'll talk about the basics.
It should be easy to read. Your essay should be double spaced an in 12 point font. This really goes along way. We're often staring at many, many essays during the reading process and having a nice easy to read essay really helps with reviewing your application.
Make sure you proofread one or two. Grammatical errors won't affect your application, but again, the harder it is for us to read your essay, the harder it is for us to evaluate it, and that will go into your final evaluation.
Remove any track changes so it's fine if you have a friend or family member look over your essay and they might give you some suggestions, but make sure to remove those track changes once they're finished, because that will upload into your essay.
And then Lastly, make sure to preview your essay. Once uploaded, whatever you see in the application is what we will see as well. So if it's hard to read for you, it's going to be hard to read for us.
In terms of content, we want to know the why. There are many different nursing programs. Why are you interested in this specific programme? This population, the security level? An? Why are you interested in pen? Out of all the schools you could be applying to?
What specifically interests you about becoming an A PRN or a nurse midwife or a nurse? A nest? Assist? What is it about the skill levels, the responsibility, the duties that interest you? What are your passions and goals and reasons for applying to this program? We don't need to know your 10 year plan. You most likely don't know your 10 year plan, but we really want to know what your goals are an your passions are.
We require 3 letters of recommendation, but you can submit up to five. We leave that at your discretion. Uhm, you don't get any more points. First, submitting up to five recommendations. This is really more for maybe you are deciding between that third and 4th recommendation. Now you don't have to decide, you can just submit all four or five. We like to see one academic reference, so someone who can comment on your ability to perform.
In a rigorous academic environment, this can be a professor. This can be an advisor research advisor, again, someone who knew you in an academic environment. It can be an older reference. It doesn't need to be someone. In the past few years, so if you went to school 10 years ago, but you're still in touch with a faculty member, it's perfectly fine to use them.
We like to see one recommendation from your current employer, so your current supervisor or manager and then the professional recommendation means someone else in your professional life. So a former supervisor or manager, a coworker, again, someone who can comment in a different professional capacity than your current manager or supervisor.

OK, great working from home. I just like to double check that My Internet hasn't gone out. So thank you everyone. So overall in terms of letters of recommendation, we're looking for quality, not name recognition or Penn Alumni. It is certainly great if you work with someone who went to Penn or you know the Dean or the CNO. But not everyone does. And that doesn't mean they can write you a strong recommendation. We'd much rather see us.
A recommendation from someone we've never seen before, but can really write Equality Letter of recommendation for you.
The recommendation should build upon other aspects of your application and shouldn't just be a recap of your resume. We know your work experience in your academic history because we saw your resume. We really want to see what will make you a great advanced practice nurse and what are all the wonderful qualities and abilities that you have. If you're nervous about weaker parts of your application, such as academics or experience, this is a great way to emphasize strengths.
And we only accept academics or professional recommendations. I'm sure your best friend or your mom or your Gran father could write a really wonderful recommendation for you, but that's not what we're interested in. We only want academic or professional recommendations.
We do require the Jirari, But for many of you it will be waived. The Jerry will be way.
But if your BSN GPA from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada.
Is a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Or you have a Masters degree from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
On a 4.0 scale we do not recalculate GPS. We don't round up, we don't consider additional coursework. Whatever your GPA says on your transcript is what we take. So a 3.1999 is not a 3.2. The waiver will be applied after you submit your application and it's processed by our office. There is nothing you need to do unless something is missing. We will waive the jirari for you if you do need to take the GRE.
Competitive applicants typically score in the 50th percentile in both of our will and quantitative sections, and a four on the analytical writing section.
The toll Fuller Isles is required if you are a non native English speaker or if your undergraduate degree was not conducted in English. We accept either tests. We don't have a preference and the minimum scores are on the screen.
For transcripts, we require transcripts from your BSN program and all additional degrees or coursework completed. So if your nursing degree is your second degree will need that first transcript. If he received a Masters degree. If you took courses part time at a Community College will need to see transcripts from all those institutions. Unofficial transcripts are accepted and strongly encouraged during the application process.
Usually you can log into your application portal and just downloaded an official transcript to submit to us. You only need to submit official transcripts if you're admitted, so save that money in time and in the meantime, just submit your unofficial transcripts.
If you attended school outside of the United States, you must have your transcripts evaluated by Wes or CGFNS.
And just some other application items we do need to see your RN or a PRN license. You should upload whatever you're issued a scan of your physical copy. If you only have a screenshot of the online certificate, that is fine. We just needed to have your name and your license number. The state that you're licensed in and the expiration date so we know it is active again. You will need a Pennsylvania license before you start the clinical sequence, so just keep that in mind if you're applying from out of state.
If you are an international applicant and you don't have a Pennsylvania license or another license in the United States, but you are licensed to practice in another country, you must complete the CGFNS certification exam that can unfortunately take awhile, so we recommend starting at least a year in advance if you need to do this.
All of our programs require an introductory statistics course that just needs to show up on your transcript. There's nothing additional you need to do an competitive applicants will be invited to interview starting in the fall. That's by invitation only, so we will reach out to you.
Next, I want to briefly touch on tuition and financial aid.
I'm not a financial aid counselor. We have fantastic financial aid counselors available who can talk to you about specifics of loans and tuition and your specific situation. This is just some general information for you to start thinking about tuition and fees for all of our programs are available on our website and very basically, your program costs depend on how many course units you take per semester.
The average course unit at Penn is worth one. See you and it is equal to four semester hours.
These are the tuition and fees for the 2020 and 2021 academic year. Again, your program cost depends on how many CPUs you take per semester. The rates here are fully inclusive of all fees. There is again a breakdown on our website of what just tuition in the fees are.
An the estimate for full time enrollment if you're taking forum or see use in the fall and spring does include estimates for personal an living expenses. So this may not be accurate for you again. The estimated budget is available on our website, so you can see the breakdown.
We do have a variety of scholarships available for our students. Full-time students are eligible for need and merit based awards. If you are a Penn Medicine or a chop employee In addition to whatever tuition benefits you receive. We also have a great program where if you take 4 courses in a calendar year, that's January through December, you'll receive a scholarship for the cost of tuition for that 4th course.
4 quart four courses. Get one free so it's a great opportunity In addition to any other tuition benefits that you receive. And again, that is for all Penn Medicine employees. All hospitals, including Princeton, Chester County, Lancaster and chop as well. We do participate in better in an GI benefits. So if you are eligible for the post 911 yellow ribbon program, you can receive money for that. We have some specific programs based on interest. We also have a scholarship.
Return peace core volunteers.
Many of our students do wind up taking out loans. There are a variety of loan options an it's really what's best for you and your situation. There are federal loans. Of course. There are also private loans and that really again just depends on you your prior loans, your financial situation. There are a lot of benefits and drawbacks to each an I just encourage you to weigh all of your options and thoroughly vet all the different loans available to you.
If you do have to take out loans, there are several repayment programs available to you. There is the public service loan forgiveness program where if you make 120 consecutive payments, the remainder of your federal loans can be forgiven. There are also specific repayment programs for nursing loans, where, for example, if you agree to work in a certain area or organization after graduation, they will pay your loans back.
So there are several opportunities on the screen for you to research.
And now we'll just touch on application deadlines. So there are several different deadlines it depends on when you plan on enrolling and your enrollment status.
So if your hope this is reversed, so will start from the bottom up. So the nurse anesthesia program only has one deadline that is November 2nd, 2020 and again we're meeting for 2022, so keep that in mind. Annual be notified by late April of your admissions decision.
If you are applying to one of our MSN programs and you want to start and spring, which would be January 2021, you need to apply by October 15th and the latest you'll hear back ISM in December.
If you're interested in applying full time for either summer, fall doesn't matter, you need to apply by November 2nd, 2020. Full time will here by mid February or full time. Summer will here by mid February in full time fall will here by mid April.
And if you're interested in applying for a part time summer or fall, you have until March 15th, 2021 to apply, and you'll be notified throughout late April to mid may. So this means we have while we have one deadline for enrollment for your different enrollment status is we have a rolling decision process, so as after the deadline will start reviewing applications, you may be contacted two weeks after the deadline. You might not be contacted.
Until a month or two after the deadline. So we asked for your patience as we're viewing many different applications and you will hear by these time frames.
We are also hosting a variety of program specific webinars. We unfortunately won't be having an in person open house this year, so again we're hosting webinars on each program. I strongly encourage you to sign up for a few of these, especially if you are debating between programs you'll hear from faculty within these programs and who teach in these programs. And they are and many of them are alumni of these programs as well.
So there will be about an hour long and there are great way to learn about all of the different programs that we.
Have so all the programs are listed here. We will have a PhD webinar later in the fall that is still being scheduled. So just stay tuned if you're interested in a PhD program, but all of these are live and you can register now on our website.
OK, so now I will take your questions if you want to type your questions in the chat box.
I ask that you stay fairly general with your questions. If you have anything very specific, we can always talk about that offline, but let's stick to some general questions for now, so I'll take a moment for you to type them in the chat box.

Uh, yes and no. Uhm no one is going to come knocking on your door if you decide to work part time. However, it's a very intensive program. You really don't have alot of time outside of your class work and Clinicals an of course sleeping. So it's really about using your time wisely so we do not recommend working while in the si RNA program.

Do you recommend obtaining a Masters degree prior to entering the nurse anesthesia program and why? We don't recommend it? Or I should say it's not required it. It certainly doesn't look poorly upon you if you have one, or if you don't have one. I would say the majority of our applicants and students don't have a Masters degree, so it's really up to you.
If I already submitted my application, would like to add another letter from a manager. Can I have them email it to the admissions email? No, so we don't accept anything additional after you've submitted your application unless it was missing from your application.
Rachel Sabin
12:36:47 PM
For the CRNA program- is CCRN exam suggested before you apply or is by program start ok?
How many see used as a part time student typically take up. That really depends on the student. I would say most part time students take two classes per semester. Summer going really part time and may only take one class per semester.
Roughly how many students apply to the anesthesia program and how many are accepted. We get about, um, 100 and 22130 applications a year for an entering class of 30 students.

12:37:16 PM
Can I use my preceptor from my master program as an academic recommendation?
For the DMP programs or applications accepted prior to the deadline, if an application is submitted early, so answer for all programs, not just DNP. No, we only start reviewing applications after the deadline.
For this statistics course requirement, does the grade matter in the course? Yes, we do like to see a B or higher and would a geography statistics course qualify? Whatever if it's an introductory statistics course, we will accept it.
Emily Karsch
12:37:54 PM
For CRNA students - is it possible that the student's primary site can be a pediatric site, or are the primary sites always adult hospitals?
If doing the MSN program part time, can we schedule our classes on one or two days during the week so we can still work? Yes, classes are usually just one day a week for a few hours, so most of the time people can schedule their classes so they're only on campus one or two days a week. We certainly can't guarantee it.
But most it, most students do wind up doing that.
Do you accept prereq courses taken online? Yes, we do accept classes taken through any accredited institution, whether it is in person or online.
What is the average class size? It's around 20, maybe 30 students. At the most. There are some larger classes which are your pathophysiology, pharmacology, classes that everyone takes. But most classes are around 20 people, maybe less.
Is a program 100% on site or partial or hybrid? and I also see a question with ongoing Cove in our class is still traditional so our MSN in nursing estesia DMP programs are on campus. You are expected to be in person on campus.
This fall semester classes for the nursing school will be 100% online with the exception of the simulation labs and clinical rotation. Those will be in person. We are evaluating things as they progress, so we most likely won't make a decision about summer, spring or summer classes until we're closer to that.
George Metz
12:39:51 PM
I already have an MSN and teach BSN program and was a research assistant previously. Does Penn offer stipends for DNP students?
I have been advising people to apply as if you're going to attend an in person program since it is a year from now, maybe 2 if you're applying to the si RNA program. A lot of things can happen in that time frame, so you should apply expecting to potentially be in seats for next year.

what classes aren't required but help bulk up your transcript for admittance into the anesthesia program?
For the si RNA program is the CCRI excuse me CC RN exam suggested before you apply or is by program start OK that is not required so it is up to you. It certainly looks good, but we do have students who enter who have not taken the CCRN exam.

Will they try to schedule your clinicals closer to where you live if you request it (for instance, if I live in NJ, would they avoid doing clinicals in Delaware)?

Is there an age limit for the prereqs? Such as being taken from within the last 10 years
Can I use my preceptor for my Masters program as an academic recommendation? Yes, if they can uhm comment on your academic ability, we understand that you may not be in touch with faculty members anymore. So if they are able to talk about that, they could be a good academic recommendation.
For si RNA students, is it possible that the students primary site can be pediatric site or their primary sites always adult hospitals know they can be a pediatric site.
Does Penn offer stipends for the DMP students? Uhm.
You might be able to get a very small part time job, but again, we typically don't have part time opportunities for the DMP students.

How many clinical hours are obtained in the MSN program? and typically how many days/ week?
What classes aren't required, but help bulk up your transcript for mittens to the anesthesia program? There are no specific courses. This is really up to you. If you'd like to take classes of the non degree student, you certainly can. You can look into pathophysiology or pharmacology or any kind of basic core course, but there's no specific class that.
Would help or or hurt your chances.

does penn accept advanced patho or pharm as transfer credit toward the crna dnp degree?
Will they try to schedule your clinicals closer to where you live if you request it? For instance, if I live in New Jersey, would they avoid doing clinicals in Delaware? Unfortunately, we can't guarantee that there is a lot of competition between all the nursing schools and medical schools and PA schools in the area, so we will do our absolute best to make clinicals convenient for you. But we can't guarantee.

for CRNA- will being in a critical care fellowship be considered as ICU experience
That you wouldn't be traveling for a clinical.
Is there an age limit for the prereqs, such as being taken within the last 10 years?
Are if you're applying for the accelerated BSN program, yes. If you're applying for the MSN program or anesthesia program, no. And again the only prereq for those is the statistics class.

Does the interview process entail testing or written essays on day of the interview?
How many clinical hours are obtained in the MSN program? It does vary by program. Most, I believe all of them are over 500 hours and typically how many days per week, usually 28 hour shifts per week.
Does Penn, except advanced path or farm as a transfer credit? I'll answer for all programs, it depends. Transfer credits can be evaluated only after you're offered admission. Transfer credit is not guaranteed, so you would have to submit your transcript and also the syllabus from a class that you took.
For the si, RNA will being in a critical care fellowship be considered as I see you experience? It depends how long the fellowship is and if you have any other experience.

How many applicants are there for the women's health and gender-related NP/ Nurse-midwifery MSN program? And how many are accepted?
Does the interview process entail testing a written essays on the day of the interview? No, it is the faculty interviewing you about. Specifics of the program.
If you're currently in the a BSN program, is their tuition assistance or other scholarships available through Penn? No, you're eligible for the same scholarships. There is nothing specific for current Penn students at the moment.
Asking about how many applicants for the Women's Health program, so I'll answer for all programs. Typically we get around anywhere from 20 to 40 applications for each program an we typically admit around 30 to 40% for each MSN program.
