You'll see the closed captioning in the chat box.
This is a brief outline of what will be going over today. Will talk about our MSN and EMP programs here at Penn Nursing application requirements and tips and then I will take your questions.
Here's a list of our MSN programs. We offer a variety of advanced practice programs across the life spectrum from neonatal all the way up through adult gerontology NP programs. We also offer 2 administrative programs that are non clinical in focus in leadership and Healthcare Administration.
All of our MSN programs can be completed on a full time or part time basis. About 2/3 of our students are doing the program part time. So it is a flexible option. All of our programs are also on campus located in Philadelphia. The nurse practitioner programs start off with our core curriculum pathophysiology pharmacology and physical assessment, you take your theory courses, you're in classroom courses.
And you also complete clinicals clinicals could be in the Philadelphia area they could also be in New Jersey and Delaware with for those of you who aren't in the NE are very close by so do keep that in mind that you may need additional licensure.
All of our programs can be completed as postgraduate APR APR in certificates for current nurse practitioners or midwives. What this means is let's say you are a psychiatric mental health NP and you'd like to now become a family NP.
You can submit an application and based on the classes that you took for your previous.
Nurse practitioner program will evaluate those and then let you know what remaining classes. You need to take to become a family and paid so all of these programs can be done as a postgraduate certificate.
Grace Wachuku

yes
We often get asked which program is right for me our programs are based on the API and consensus model, which means the focus of care is based on the patient needs not the clinical setting so if you become an adult. Gerontology acute care nurse practitioner. That means you're only certified to take care of adult patients in an acute care setting.
Kate Ingram
12:06:34 PM
Yes
If you are a pediatric primary care nurse practitioner, you're only certified to take care of pediatric patients and in primary care setting. This doesn't mean that you're restricted to an inpatient or outpatient, setting or a specific type of office or organization. This just is based on the population and the patient needs so do keep this in mind, if you're debating between programs.
There's a lot more information on the consensus website. This is just some brief information.
Um button just remember that, if you do feel that you need additional training or you. You know you'd like to become a different kind of nurse practitioner that we do offer postgraduate programs as well.
We have a variety of minors for our MSN programs keep in mind that are many of our MSN programs.
Do not have electives or they only have one elective so these might be additional coursework for your program or take additional time. Some of the miners are just for your knowledge. They do not lead to any sortof certification for example, global health.
Other minor such as adult oncology or transformative nurse education will allow you to sit for the national exam. So you can be certified. In those areas and we do have more information on our website where you can see a breakdown of the classes required for each program are minor excuse me. Most miners only require about 3 classes.
We also have several dual degree options for our MSN students where you can do a dual degree with Admaster Bioethics Program Master Public Health Master in law or the MBA program. All here at Penn. These are great opportunities to expand your knowledge allow you to become a more well, rounded practitioner. You can also take elective classes at these other schools as well so if you are not interested.
In a dual degree you still have the opportunity to take some classes elsewhere.
As I mentioned earlier are MSN programs can be completed full time or part time. If you are entering part time you can start in the spring semester, which starts in mid January somewhere, which typically starts in late may or fall which typically starts in late August or early September.
If you're interested in attending full-time for any of our programs. Do keep in mind that specific program start in specific terms, either the summer or fall.
All of our Q Care programs require specific work experience. You need to have a minimum of one year. RN experience in the area. You are applying to and are Niall Niall program requires a minimum of two years in a Nick you.
I'll work experience should be calculated after any orientation or probationary period. Our primary care programs do not require work experience. We do strongly recommend it. We find it makes you a competitive applicant. Ann you are better prepared for the program. But it is not required for our primary care programs.
These are the requirements for the MSN programs. I will go into them in a little more detail in the coming slides.
And these are the requirements for our postgraduate. AP RN certificate applications.
Our next program is the DNP in nurse anesthesia this program is full time only that it is not possible to complete it on a part time basis. It is 3 years long, and you only need a BSN to enter it does not require a Masters degree.
We are currently emitting about a year and a half in advance, so keep this in mind. If you are not planning on applying right away.
Fall 2019 applicants are applying for summer. Twenty twenty one R summer 2020 cohort is completely full.
There is a work experience requirement, you do need to have at least 2 years in ICU or critical care working with the most critically ill patients.
The curriculum is fully integrated between your didactic classes your clinical placements and Simulation, clap classes as well. There is the anesthesia component. I'm as well as the DNP component. It is a doctoral program.
The nurse anesthesia program is set up as a primary site model so you complete all of your required clinical rotations. In all the different areas that you need to, for the anesthesia program. There are specialty rotations as well. But you also have a primary site that you return to every year. So it allows students to be mentored and to have a home base when you're not rotating in the rest of your specialty areas.
It's a great way to take what you've learned from the rest of your rotations and apply it to a comfortable working environment alot of students wind up finding employment at their primary site model as well.
And these are the requirements for the nurse synaesthesia application.
I just want to highlight some advantages about coming to Penn nursing, especially for our clinical programs, 1st in Morse. Most importantly, we arrange your clinical placements for you. That's a burden taken off for our students. You do not have to find your own clinicals. As I mentioned they might be in New Jersey or Delaware so do keep that in mind, but we find them for you. You might be in some of our world class hospitals like the hospital University, Pennsylvania.
The Children's Hospital, Philadelphia, he could be in federally qualified health centers outpatient clinics doctors offices. We try and find a variety of places and we also try and focus on the medically underserved because we are community focused, especially in our community of West Philadelphia.
There are many national and international opportunities for students who offer short-term study abroad programs and some programs, even allow you to complete usually your last clinical elsewhere. Some of our programs have partnerships with hospitals around the country or you can even complete your last clinical abroad in another country.
Our students have the opportunity to participate in research. You don't have to be a PhD student to get involved in research. You can do research with a professor here or perhaps find a position in a local hospital. So there are many opportunities for that. Our professors strongly encourage at the content you produce in and outside the classroom. I'm could potentially be used for further research or instruction leader in your life. We are also strongly focused in policy, and legislation.
We really encourage our students to be advocates and every year. Our students go to the state capital for lobby day and lobby on behalf of pressing issues, either for our patients or fellow nurses or anything that might affect the nursing community.
The last program, I'll discuss today is our post. Masters DNP program. This is a part time program only, an can be done in 2 years. It is postmasters only as the name implies, so you do need a master in nursing. It could be clinical. But it can also be focused in education administration. So it does not need to be clinical Masters degree.
The Post Masters DNP program is non clinical. It is focused in leadership an innovation an it. The primary goal is to develop skills and translating research into practice in an area of your interest to improve care delivery and to change practice and to increase innovation. It is 100% online and it is asynchronous, which means you do not have to be on your computer at a specific time and it is designed.
To work with your schedule, but there is an on campus intensive, which happens in late August, which is really meant for you to get to know your fellow cohort to get to know your faculty members and to really start. This cohort building that will last throughout the 2 years.
This is the curriculum for the post. Masters DNP program. You have your core classes an you also have your DNP project classes as well.
And these are the requirements for the Post Masters DNP program.
Now I'll get into the components of the application. So my biggest piece of advice is to start your application early. Our applications are now available and we do have a deadline coming up on November 1st. We encourage you to start your application earlier.
It's really for your benefit it gives you plenty of time to submit the most competitive application possible and it's easier to fix errors.
We require a resume for all of our programs.
You are welcome to include a variety of things on your resume certainly all professional experience is any volunteer experience or extracurricular activities. Certainly highlight any honors or awards am leadership experience any research that you've completed or publications. If you weren't clinical instructor or preceptor. Any significant hobbies. We have a very holistic application process, which means we're looking at the entire application.
And your resume is one way to highlight that.
Each program requires essays just some basic points first make sure they're easy to read double spaced 12 point font. Make sure your proofreading one or 2 grammatical errors won't affect your essay or your chance of being admitted. But if it's very hard to read that will certainly count against you make sure to remove any track changes because whatever you upload into the application.
You See and again the harder. It is for us to read your application. It can certainly count against you.
In terms of content we're really looking at the why there are many different nursing programs. Why are you interested in this program and why specifically pen? What are your passions your goals your reasons for wanting to become an advanced practice nurse or nurse collar and for Post Masters. DNP applicants make sure to discuss your DNP project. And for all applicants. Make sure to do your research make sure this program will if it's an aligns with your goals.
If there's any specific areas that you're interested in because of pen or that you'd like to be involved with a pen make sure to include that in your essay as well.
We require 3 letters of recommendation for programs, but you can submit up to 5. We do like to seen academic academic reference. We understand the farther you are away from any type of school. You might not be in touch with an academic reference. That's OK in that case. Try and find a professional reference that can comment on any sort of academic abilities. Perhaps you did an evidence based project or a research project and then can comment on that.
We like to see your recommendation from your current supervisor and then someone else in another professional capacity of former supervisor.
Um a colleague from a different job someone who can comment on a different aspect of your professional abilities.
Overall, we are looking for quality, not name recognition or just because there are Penn Alumni. We would much rather see someone who knows you well an can write a really quality recommendation than someone who has a highly regarded title your recommendation should build on other aspects of your application and should not just be a recap of your resume. We really want to see how this person knows you Anne how they can comment on your different.
Aspects and abilities in the program your recommendations could also emphasize strengths in weaker parts of your application. So if you are concerned about your academic ability or your work experience make sure to have your recommenders comment on that area.
And we only accept academic or professional recommendations, we don't accept personal recommendations.
The GRE is required for our MSN an nurse anesthesia programs. However, it will be waived if your BSN GPA from the United States or Canada is has a 3.2 cumulative GPA or you have a Masters degree from the United States or Canada with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. We do not recalculate the GPA we do not take into account any other classes.
It must be a 3.2 for your BSN or 3.0 for your Masters degree. The waiver will be applied. After your application is processed by our office after you submit there is nothing you need to do.
If you do need to take the jirari competitive applicants typically score in the 50th percentile. Anna for on the writing section and then Jerry is not required for the post. Masters DNP or our post graduate certificates.
We require the Toefl or Ielts if you are a non native English speaker or if your undergraduate degree was not conducted in English, an here are the to fulan eilts requirements. We just need one we don't have a preference for either.
For transcripts, we require transcripts from your BSN program in all additional degrees or course for completed so if you have if your BSN program is your second degree will need the transcripts from your first degree any additional degrees of course work.
We need transcripts for that.
You can upload unofficial transcripts and they are strongly encouraged because it makes your application processing go faster. We only need transcript. Excuse me official transcripts if you are admitted.
If you attended school abroad outside of the United States your transcripts must be evaluated through S or CGF&S.
We do require an R NRA PRN license. If you are currently licensed upload whatever you're issued a skin of your physical copy screenshot of the online certificate. We will take whatever you are issued at a reminder that you will need a Pennsylvania license before you start the clinical sequence.
If you are currently licensed outside the United States and you don't have a Pennsylvania license. You'll need to complete the CG finesse certification program. We do require a statistics class for programs and that just needs to show up on your transcript. There's nothing further. You need to do and all of our programs have an interview component by invitation. Only we will reach out to you if we do choose to interview you.
I will briefly cover tuition and financial aid financial aid is different. For every person so I strongly encourage you to reach out to our fantastic financial aid office for specific questions. The tuition and fees for all of our programs are available on our website your program costs depend on how many course units. You take per semester. The average course at Penn is one course unit, which at another University would be about 4 semester hours.
So it doesn't matter if full time part time in state out-of-state the cost is the same.
If you are eligible for federal loans. You can fill out a FAFSA. We also have a variety of scholarships and grants here at the School of Nursing that are all available on our website. If you are a Penn Medison employee. We have an opportunity where you can take 4 classes in one calendar year.
So that's January through February and the 4th class will be free so that is for any Penn Medison employee. At one of the 6 hospitals in the Penn Medison umbrella and then Lastly. We strongly encourage you to explore external scholarships. There are many external scholarships out there. There are also loan forgiveness programs nursing core programs where you join an you have a work requirement for a certain amount of years and they'll.
Either pay for your school or pay for your loans so again. It is all very individualized. Ann you're encouraged to reach out directly to the financial aid office.
OK application deadlines.
We have a November 1st deadline coming up very quickly that is for if you're interested in our MSN programs and you want to attend full-time or starts part time this coming January. That deadline is November, 1st if you're interested in our MSN programs for starting part time in the summer or fall that deadline is not until April, 1st so you do have some time.
Are nurse anesthesia program is also coming up at the deadline is also coming up for November 1st and a reminder that we are admitting for twenty twenty one post. Masters DNP deadline also November, 1st and then Lastly for postgraduate APR and certificate programs. The spring start deadline is Jan Excuse me November, 1st summer or fall start is April 1st.
Now we'll get into some Q&A so if you have questions. Please type them into the chat box an I will answer them.

What are some characteristics that successful applicants often have great question they have compelling essays so they've clearly explained why they're interested in this specific program. They've also talked about why they want this program an what specifically about Penn interests them. They have strong recommendations that back up all the wonderful qualities that would make them a great nurse practitioner or nurse a nest assist.

Many in-patient jobs now are seeking acute care NP degrees to even be hired... how strict is the 1yr prerequisite of APRN experience for applying to the post-masters AC-AGNP? I am an FNP but seeking to transition to acute care.
We don't have a minimum GPA cutoff. We are generally looking for above a 3.0. So we are looking for a strong academic performance as well.
An if you are invited to an interview and they interview. We are looking for that. You truly understand the role of this skews me specific nurse practitioner program and again kind of repeating what you discussed in your application. So why you want. This program potential career goals on what makes you qualified for this program.
I applied for the accelerated BSN program does that mean I need to repeat the application process. After I get my BSN. No, it does not you do not need to reapply? How many applicants does the post Masters DNP generally receive we are in our 3rd or we will be accepting our 3rd cohort so our applications have steadily grows every year we're expecting around 40 to 50 applications.
Paulina Fernandez

As a returned peace core volunteer Molly 2010 wow. That sounds very interesting will I be eligible for the Peace Core Scholarship? Yes. So we do offer a scholarship for return peace. Core volunteers and that information is on the website. It's called the cover Dell Scholarship.

12:30:11 PM
How many students are in each PM-DNP cohort?
Should we submit updated unofficial transcripts if there have been changes since the application was submitted uhm? Yes, it might depend on where we are in reviewing your transcript. If we cannot excuse me, your application. If we can update it. But just send it along and will let you know.
Can one change from full time to part time or or part time to full time like most things it depends if it's during the application process.
Jonathan or Jon Henzel
12:30:28 PM

We could potentially change it if it's afterwards.
Because we arrange our clinical placements, sometimes we aren't able to accommodate changes. So it really depends on when your team when you want to change.

Many impatient jobs are now sinking acute care degrees to be hired yes. We certainly aware of that how strict is the one year prerequisite of APR and experience for applying to the postmasters, acute care program. It is strict. You do need to have at least 1 year of work experience if you have specific questions about the streamline program. Why don't you email us an we can send you specific information on that.

Is it okay to apply to the Nurse Midwifery program without direct experience working in L&D, maternity?
For the anesthesia program? How many applicants are interviewed an what is the cohort class size. The class size is about 30 people or so per year, an we interview around 50 to 60, depending on the competitiveness of the applicant.
Danielle Shepard
12:32:19 PM

Can I begin the midwifery program part time in the summer term or do only full-time midwifery. Students start in the summer term know you can start part time in the summer term and that goes for any MSN program as well.

General entry Masters degrees.

The research methods prerequisite for PM-DNP.: can that be completed after acceptance if my current Masters class does not meet requirement?
Is it OK to apply to the nurse midwifery program without direct experience working in labor and delivery maternity? Yes. It's OK. We actually get a lot of people who work in acute care who want to come to the nurse midwifery program again. You don't need relevant experience for our primary care programs, but we do strongly encourage RN experience.
Paulina Fernandez
12:33:51 PM
also for the MSN/BSN program, does everyone get interviewed to get accepted?
Are the on line streamline post Masters program? Cohort size capped at a specific number not necessarily we? Do try and keep them on a smaller size 2.
Ensure that the faculty member can have the correct attention and an information for everyone, but there's no one specific number that it's capped at.
Since you mentioned the essay for application would you consider that to be the biggest influence in getting accepted or not I wouldn't say it's the most important part. But it's really one of the few places that were you explain your reasoning for applying to this program so I would say that if you don't have a very compelling essay it can make a big difference. But because we have a holistic application process. It is not ranked any higher or lower than any other part of the application.
The research methods prerequisite for the Post Masters. DNP cannot be completed after acceptance of my current Masters class does not meet the requirement on your current Masters class probably does so you can email us. The course in the description and it will let you know if necessary, you could retake it after acceptance.
For the BSN MSN program does everyone who gets interviewed get accepted. No, not necessarily just because you were invited for an interview does not automatically mean you would be admitted.
OK, there any other questions?

Again, no you don't need work labor and delivery experience for the midwifery program.

Do we provide job placement upon finishing program. No, we do not? But we have a very strong network of alumni and faculty.

How many applicants do we get for the psych mental health program and how large are the cohorts are cohorts are around uh anywhere from 20 to 30 students coming in each year. An we did Psych mental health program is actually very popular. So you can expect that to be the application size to be maybe double or so how soon after the deadline our interview scheduled.
Paulina Fernandez
12:38:14 PM
are accelerated programs more competitive?
There is a wonderful chart on our website that shows come when you can expect to hear back up based on when you are applying so we do prioritize based on term. An enrollment you could hear back in 2 weeks. You could be here back in 2 months, so do keep that in mind.
Is it possible to work full time throughout your entire part time MSN program?
Uhm I would say up until your clinicals you could potentially work full time. Once you start your clinical sequence. It could get pretty difficult organizing clinicals and your work schedule.
