Great, thank you everyone.
Great to see all of your names and locations. I hope you are all doing well. My name is Jamie Bergstein Yedlin. I'm the Associate Director of graduate admissions and marketing here at Penn Nursing.
Just a few housekeeping tips before we begin the rest of the web. And are we recommend using a laptop or desktop computer with Chrome or fire Fox to fully participate in the session?
Some features an audio won't be available on mobile devices or other browsers we can't troubleshoot during the presentation, so if you have any sound issues, try Ek sitting the browser and then coming back in. That usually fixes it.

This is what we're going over today. We will be discussing our graduate programs, so our MSN programs, an RDN P and nurse anesthesia will also go over the application requirements and some tips regarding the application will briefly touch on financial aid and then we'll get to your questions.

12:07:21 PM
Will we be receiving a link to a recording of this if we will have to leave early for class?
First, we'll discuss our MSN programs, which are on the screen. We have a variety of nurse practitioner programs that goes across the entire lifespan and we also have two administration program which are non clinical. They do not lead to a nurse practitioner or advanced practice license.
All of our MSN programs can be completed full time or part time full time. Most can be done within 12 to 14 months. Our family NP program an R nurse midwifery program are a little longer at a year and a half full time.
Part time really depends on your schedule an your desire to complete the program in a certain amount of time. Most students complete the program part time within 2 to 3 years.
For our clinical specialties, we often get asked which program is right for me.
Some some of you might know exactly what program you're interested in you might know you've always wanted to be a pediatric primary care NP or an adult acute NP some of you might be still deciding our programs are now based off the APR and consensus model, which was created a little over 10 years ago to align the APR enrolls with population so the focus of care is based on patient needs not the clinical setting.
So just because you are a primary care prepared NP does not mean. You can't work in a hospital. It's not limiting you to in person excuse me inpatient versus outpatient settings. It just means that you are restricted on the acuity level. An population focus so as an adult gerontology, acute care.
Nurse practitioner you can only practice at you can only see adult patients in the acute care setting if you are a pediatric primary care nurse practitioner, you can only see pediatric patients in the primary care setting.
This is a very basic outline of the clinical MSN curriculum, so if you are interested in our nurse practitioner programs. You can see more a more detailed curriculum for each program on our website.
All of the programs start out with the 3 peas, the core curriculum, which are pathophysiology pharmacology and physical assessment.
Who are required to take a research class then you have your theory courses and then your clinical placements?
The school organizes your clinical placements for you so that is one less thing you need to worry about.
Are clinicals take place in Pennsylvania? New Jersey and Delaware for those of you unfamiliar with the area. New Jersey and Delaware are very close to Pennsylvania, New Jersey depending on where you are can only be 15 or 20 minutes and Delaware is about a half hour to the border from Philadelphia.
So we organize all of your clinical placements for you and that is one less thing that you need to worry about as a student here.
For those of you interested in our administration programs, either the health leadership or nursing and Healthcare Administration. There are a few differences between the 2 programs. Basically, the health leadership program is a little more flexible. They have more elective options. The nursing and Healthcare administration program is a little more structured and does have a 250 hour required practicum.
We have several minors that you can choose from as well. That can be incorporated into your program. Minors often work best if you were doing. The program part time just because of the very fast curriculum of the full time program as well as limited electives often don't have time for a minor or you might need to add extra time.
Some of these miners do lead to certification exams or eligibility to take certification exams. Others are just designed to increase your knowledge of these particular areas all over minors are only around 3, maybe 4 classes.
As I mentioned earlier all of our MSN programs can be completed on a full time or part time basis. If you're interested in part time enrollment you can start in any semester, so that's the spring, which is mid January somewhere late may or fall which is late August or early September.
If you're interested in starting full time just pay attention to the program. You're interested in each program has a set start term depending on when you want to start for full time.
Our Q Care programs require RN work experience all work experience should be calculated after any orientation or probationary period as you can see all of our acute care programs require at least one year of RN work experience in that area. The neonatal program requires a minimum of 2 years of work experience in in a queue.
If you're interested in our primary care programs work experience is not required. However, it is strongly recommended many of our faculty emphasize that you really need to understand what it's like to be a nurse first before you become a nurse practitioner and we find the most competitive applicants for our primary care programs usually have at least one year of work experience by the time of application.
Next I'll discuss the DNP and nurse anesthesia. This is a full time only program and it is 3 years or 36 months long. You can enter with a BSN you don't need an Masters degree.
Because of the demand, we are inventing about a year and a half in advance, so if you are applying this fall. You're applying for summer 2022.
2021 is already full so you'll need to be applying for summer 2022.
There is a work experience requirement, you need to have at least 2 years again. Post orientation in an ICU or critical care environment working with the most critically ill patients.
There are certain areas. We don't accept which are the neonatal ICU emergency room recovery room step down units. An Interventional radiology again to emphasize work experience is incredibly valuable, he'll hear excuse me. So are most competitive applicants typically have at least 2 years closer to.
3 at time of application.
The nurse anesthesia curriculum is fully integrated between your didactic clinical and simulation classes. So you don't take a year and a half of didactic courses and then you go year and a half into your clinical courses. They are fully integrated throughout the entire curriculum really allowing for well rounded explore ative curriculum.
We have a variety of clinical options for the nurse anesthesia program. We operate on a primary site model, which means you have a home base. You have a clinical site that you return to when you're not rotating through your specialty clinicals. We again have clinical placements in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware for this program as well as a clinical offered at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
These are the application requirements for the MSN in nursing, aesthesia programs. I will get into this in a little bit. I just wanted to show you the requirements right now, so you can get an idea of what we're looking for.
Now let's talk about the pen advantage why come to Penn Nursing as I mentioned we organize your clinical placements for you. That is a huge weight off your shoulders. It is one less thing that you have to worry about. We focus our clinicals on the medically underserved and that blends right into community focus were located in West Philadelphia, which is a very diverse vibrant exciting neighborhood and we really feel a commitment to serving.
The West, Philadelphia, an greater Philadelphia community so a lot of your clinicals will have a community focus. We do a lot of programming. A lot of partnerships with West Philadelphia, so for example, the past few years. This school has organized West. Philadelphia women 's Day, where students and faculty and staff and students from some other Penn schools, such as the Meta Medical School in dental school.
Come together for a day and offer free services to the women of West Philadelphia and there is usually a focus on each day. But so that they are able to receive some necessary services. It's a wonderful way to give back to the community and home your skills as well.
There are many national and international opportunities. Of course, our travel is on pause right now, but our students have the opportunity to sometimes do depending on the program. Do clinicals in other states such as California, Utah, Hawaii. Other far distant places from Philadelphia and even do clinicals internationally or do short term abroad.
Renee Irving
12:18:29 PM
Hi from California
Programs service trips things like that during winter break, or spring break. So hopefully very soon. Those will start resuming there are many research opportunities for our students. You do not have to be a doctoral student to engage in research. As I mentioned all of our MSN students take a research course. There are research opportunities available with our faculty.
As well as our hospital partners.
We really want you to leave with the foundation of research. We want you to engage in scholarly activity. So there are opportunities to build upon what you've done in class to submit publications for journals. Manuscripts presents your poster presentations at conferences around the country or even the world and you can take those and build upon those in your professional life.
And then Lastly we are not just training you to be advanced practice nurses. We're also training you to be leaders in your hospitals and your organizations and your communities are alumni go on to do wonderful things, an art. The leaders and our leaders and are at the forefront of their communities. We encourage you to be politically active as well every year our students in faculty.
Have a lobby dayan will go to Harris Burg which is the capital of Pennsylvania and lobby for bills and laws that are important to practice you know full practice authority that help our patients that help fellow nurses. So we are encouraging you to be active in all facets of being an advanced practice nurse.
And, of course, there are many more wonderful parts to the school. We just don't have time to answer to go through them. All we'd be here for quite awhile.
Next I want to move on to some application and admissions tips.
The first is to start your application early. The application is available. Now it's been open since July first starting the application. Early allows you the most time to submit a competitive application. Even if you don't plan on submitting yet just open it, see what we're asking for there's a lot of questions in there.
It'll give you a better idea of the time you'll need to really sit down and complete the application. It's also easier to fix errors. If you start your application early. I understand a lot of people wait until the last minute. I know that will never change. But if you start your application earlier. You have more time to work on it, and hopefully you'll be able to submit earlier and catch any errors any missing information or uploads that you need to do.
We require a resume for every program. We don't have any preference for format. Just make sure that it is easy to read. There's no page length requirement. Most people submit between one or 2 page resume and there's really no limit to what you can include what's on the screen are some you know.
Think popular items that people usually include so all of your professional experience and if you if nursing is your second karere and you had even if it's not related job. If you were in something totally different from medicine. You can feel free to include that as well.
Corinne Michaud
12:22:11 PM
Hi from Atlanta!
Volunteer experience an extracurricular activity any honors or or wards. Certainly highlighting leadership experience in the research if you're a clinical instructor preceptor significant hobbies and again this is just kind of the most popular things that people put on so feel free to include anything else, you think that might help the Admissions Committee.
Each program requires a few essays, so first. The basics should be easy to read double spaced 12 point fonts. I know that kind of seems silly, but I read almost every graduate application. As so that means. I'm reading many, many applications a day and I personally. Appreciate it at my eyes. Appreciate it if the essay is easy to read if the font is easy to read.
Proofread and proofread and just one more time make sure you proofread again. You might be thinking well. Of course I'll do that, but be surprised? How many people skip this step.
One or 2 grammatical errors isn't going to make her break her application. But believe me. The many people don't proofread and it's hard to read their essays and that does make a difference in your application.
Remove any trap changes and make sure to preview once uploaded whatever you see in the application when you upload. It is what we see so if it's good to go on your end then it's good to go on our end.
So, in terms of essay content.
We really want to know why there are many different nursing programs. Why are you interested in this program and why Penn nursing? What specifically interests you about becoming an APR N? Why are you interested in this population? Why are you interested in the security level?
Passions, goals, reasons for applying to this program, we don't need your five year plan. You don't need to tell us exactly what you're going to do after graduation, but you should have an idea and we want to know. Do you know what are your goals in your ideas? What? What do you hope to achieve from this?
We require 3 letters of recommendation. You can submit up to five. You do not have to submit 5 letters. This is really more for maybe you're deciding between 3:00 and 4:00. This way you don't have to decide. You do not get extra points for submitting more than three. This is really up to your discretion. We do like to see one academic reference. We understand the farther away you get from school.
You might not keep in touch with any faculty or advisors. That's fine, we really want the strongest recommendations possible, so that's OK if you don't have a strong academic reference. On the flip side, we can't. We do accept older recommendations, so if you've been out of school 5 or 10 years, but you still keep in touch with faculty, you can certainly have those recommendations. We like to see a recommendation from your current employer or supervisor.
And then professional can be someone else from your professional history of a former supervisor or coworker someone else who knows you in a different professional capacity.
So overall we are looking for quality, not name recognition or Penn Alumni. Of course it's great if you have a strong reference from a Dean or CNO, or someone who went to Penn, but that's not the only thing we're looking for. We'd much rather see or really strong recommendation from someone whose name we've never seen before.
Your recommendation should build upon other aspects of your application and shouldn't just be a recap of your resume. Your recommendations can emphasize strengths in weaker parts of your application, so if you are concerned about your academics, you can get an academic reference from someone from a professor whose class you did very well in. If you have limited experience, you can find a professional recommendation to talk about your passion for this.
Area and you should only have academic or professional recommendations. I'm sure your mom or dad or grandma or sister sister could write a really wonderful recommendation for you, but that's not what we're looking for.
We do require the Jirari, But it will be waived for many of you. If your BSN GPA from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada is a GPA of 3.2 or higher on a four point 4.0 scale, or you have a Masters degree from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada with a cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, we do not recalculate.
Roundup or consider additional coursework. A 3.19999 is not a 3.2. The waiver will be applied after you submit your application and it's processed by our office. There's nothing additional you need to do unless your application is missing materials. So for example, if for some reason your transcript doesn't save your cumulative GPA, we can't waive the Jirari until we have that for you.
If you do need to take the jirari, competitive applicants typically score in the 50th percentile, Anna 4 on the analytical writing section.
The Toefl or Ielts is required if you are non native English speaker or if your undergraduate degree was not conducted in English and the requirements are on the screen weeks of the to full or the Ielts. We don't have a preference.
For transcripts, we require transcripts from your BSN program and all degrees or coursework completed. You can submit unofficial transcripts and we strongly encourage you to do so during the application process. We are working remotely right now and we are going into the office every once in awhile to get any paper transcripts that come in, but that is we're not going infrequently. So please if you can upload your unofficial transcripts.
Official transcripts are only required if you are admitted and if you attended school outside the United States, your transcripts must be evaluated by Wes or CGF&S.
Just some other application items we require your RN or APR and license upload whatever you are issued. If you have a scan of your physical copies, screenshot of the online certificate, you don't need to request a mailing copy. You won't need a Pennsylvania license before you start the clinical sequence. So just keep that in mind. An international applicants if you don't have a.
Pennsylvania or other United States license. But you are licensed to practice in another country. You must complete complete this CGF&S certification program.
We do require a statistics class that just needs his show up on your transcript. There's nothing Additionally need to do and then we do have an interview process for competitive applicants. That's by invitation only. We will contact you.
Now I'm going to briefly touch on tuition and financial aid.
So I am not a financially counselor. We have fantastic financially counselors available. This is just some very basic information. I struggle encourage you to reach out directly to the financial aid office. Emails on the screen, should you have any specific questions.
So basically the program cost depends on how many course units you take per semester. The average course at Penn is 1 course unit an that's equal to four semester hours.
So these are the tuition. An fees for this year they were not.
They were reverted back to last year's prices, so they did not increase from last year. The full time cost includes estimates for personal living expenses that breakdown is available on our website. That includes housing that includes a computer, health insurance, things like that, so that might not apply to you so that full time number might be more or less depending on your personal needs.
We have a few School of Nursing scholarships. We offered need an merit based awards for our full time students. We participate in veteran and GI benefits. We have a scholarship for returned peace core volunteers. I also want to highlight our Penn Nursing Penn Medicine and Chop Scholarship program so if anyone here is an employee at Penn Medicine or chopped and that's any Penn Medicine hospital so that includes Princeton and.
Chester County, Lancaster General after completing three course units at Penn Nursing in a calendar year.
You can receive a scholarship for the cost of tuition for the 4th. See you in that same calendar year and that's on top of any tuition benefits you receive at Penn Penn Medicine or chop.
Many of our students do have to take out loans of listed some educational loan options here that have been provided by the financial aid office. It is really up to you whether you do federal or private loans. There are pluses and minuses to both of those and it really depends on your personal situation. So I strongly encourage you to just research all of your available options on there. A lot of different loan options here.
And then there are also federal loan repayment programs, so you may have heard of the public service loan forgiveness program. There's also specific ones related to nursing and National Health Service core, where if you agree to work in a certain area or city for certain amount of time, they will reimburse your loan payment. So again, a lot of different options. It's just exploring the one that works best for you.
Now we have a variety of application deadlines that are based on your enrollment term. So coming up in just over a month as our first deadline, which is October 15th and that is if you are applying for part time, spring enrollment for our MSN programs.
If you're interested in full time enrollment for the MSN, that deadline is November 2nd.
If you're interested in enrolling in part time, summer or fall for the MSN program, that deadline isn't until March 15th of next year, and then if you're interested in the nursing anesthesia program, the deadline is November 2nd. And remember, we are admitting for 2022 the nurse anesthesia program follows a fairly traditional admission cycle, so everyone will be notified of their admissions decision around the same time, which we aim for late.
Pro for MSN programs. We have a rolling decision process, so we have one deadline for your enrollment term, but the decisions are rolling so the last column is the latest around the latest time, no hear from so you and your friends might be applying, or your colleagues might be applying at the same time you might hear back in two weeks. Calling might not hear back for a month, so don't panic. We're getting through all of them. We just do them on a rolling basis.
We also have more webinars coming up. We have program specific webinars if you're if the program you're interested in isn't on this list, it means we already had the web and R. But don't worry, we have recordings of all of them on the red on this registration pages where you can where you can find the recordings will also receive a link to all of our recordings as well. In a few days, so I encourage you to sign up and learn more about.
Your specific program from the faculty who teach in the program.
Now I know that was a lot of information, but I wanted to get through it so we could go to the Q&A because that's the most important part, so I'm going to take a break for a minute and allow you to type in your questions into the chat box.
Ketty Wang

12:37:39 PM
do I still need to give TOFEL AND GRE?
After getting accepted, do we have to wait a year before taking classes? You can request to enroll early inch depending on space. For didactic classes such as pathophysiology or pharmacology, that's a conversation you can have after you are admitted.
If we attend Penn Nursing, can we take the NP licensing exam for another state? Yes, you can. You're eligible to practice in any state.
For the midwifery program, does the one year experiencing to be labor and delivery, so to emphasize our primary care programs, which include men with free, don't require work experience, it's just recommended it does not need to be in labor and delivery. So for the primary care work experience, it doesn't have to be in that area. It can certainly be helpful, but it's not required.
Amber Tran

If nursing was your second degree and you're applying to an MSN program, does your GPA for first degree calculate until your cumulative GPA for the Jerry requirement, or is it? Or is it just your BSN nursing degree GPA? It is just your BSN nursing degree so whatever the GPA that appears on your BSN transcript is what we go by.
Ketty Wang
12:39:03 PM

Since admissions are 1.5 years in advance for the DNP-NA program, do we apply during or after our 2 years of work experience? For example, could you apply after only half a year of experience since by the time the program begins you will have the full 2 years?
Why not be considered if I'm working in the ICU but have not accumulated two years of experience yet?
If I rack up two years by the time the program starts, will I be in the clear? I assume you're asking for the nurse anesthesia program.
Yes, we accept two years of experience by the start of the program.
I have an associate degree in nursing and I'm in an RN BSN program. Will use both degrees to calculate my GPA. No against only the BSN program.

Do you know when interviews will be held for the nurse anesthesia program? They usually start in February and go throughout March.
Since admissions are a year and a half in advance for the nursing, a seizure program, do we apply during or after two years of work experience? For example, could you apply after only half a year of experience? By the time the program you have the full two years? Yes, you could. However, I strongly recommend you getting some more work experience or most competitive applicants have at least two years of experience at the time of application.
Do you offer an F1 visa for international students who apply for the MSN program? That's all handled through our international students office, so I recommend reaching out to them for specific questions about visas.

Can we work as rn while pursuing our dnp program ?
Do you know if MSN students tend to work part time or full time while taking courses part time? So yes, are it's very popular to work full time or part time. If you're doing the program part time, many of our students do maintain working full time while they're in the didactic portion. Once learn the clinical portion, they do usually drop down to part time just because.
The clinical portion can be quite demanding at sometimes.
When will we know if we are accepted to the program? So again, I'll go back to this slide the right hand column is the around the latest time you'll hear back from us. It is a rolling process, so you might hear back a little bit earlier. You might hear back around this time.
So a question about the anesthesia program after getting accepted for summer 2022.
You'll hear background April 2021. Does that mean we wait one year until summer 2022 before taking classes? Yes, that's correct.
Do international students get scholarships due to restrictions? It's mostly federal funding that's reserved for domestic students. International students are typically sponsored by there.
Employer or by their country.

I placed out of my undergraduate statistics course with an AP credit that I received during high school. Does this still count towards the requisite statistics class, or does it need to be taken as an undergrad?
If you questions about working during the nurse Anesthesia Program, I mean.
Technically, we can't force you not to work. However, it is an incredibly intensive three year full time program and you really won't have time to work, so it's really up to you. Sometimes students find very, very part time jobs, maybe like a tutoring job for a few hours a week, but otherwise students completely stopped working, even they don't even do per diem shifts during the program.
