Hi, Yes I can hear you!
Alright will go ahead and get started that way we have enough time to do Q&A. Just wanted to introduce myself, my name is Philomena Church Ellie. I'm in the admissions office here at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. I oversee our accelerated nursing program here at Penn and through the admissions office and today's weather now are really just going to talk about the program itself. We talk about the different options that you can take advantage of.
Brandon Hall
12:03:44 PM
@Stefania what browser are you using?
In terms of program options start date life program. Some of the opportunities. You can take advantage of being appender seed student and we'll talk a little bit about the admissions process application and timeline, but we will also have plenty of time for Q&A. So we're going to go ahead and get started and just want to thank everyone for joining us so today for the program options were going to talk a little bit about the actual nursing program will go over some of the prerequisite courses are admissions timeline.
Stefania Patinella
12:03:45 PM
Problem solved. I can hear you!
Stefania Patinella
12:03:50 PM
Thank you.
Admissions requirements as well as I will go over some other graduate specialties.
Brandon Hall
12:04:01 PM
good!
The best I started to interrupt the best browser uses the Chrome Google Chrome. So hopefully that'll work if you're on a phone. If you're using your phone. Then you might have a little bit of.
A problem seeing the whole screen or hearing me completely but you should be able to get the gist of it and fingers crossed. This is recording. I'm will be sharing it with everyone as well.
We're going to talk about the gradual specialties that you can be part up here at Penn as well as some of the opportunities. You can take advantage of research study abroad global opportunities. There's just so many things that are community outreach. There's a lot of wonderful things, you can do while you're also completing their degrees will talk about some of the clinical sites. We go to all of the campus resources and then of course will open it up to QA.
So for the accelerated program so our accelerated option a program offers 3 options. Students can apply to the BSM second degree program, which is for students who know I want to be honest. I want to go into the nursing field.
It says you know what I want to do with my career and it's a second bachelors or possible second degree. For many of you so you do have to have a bachelors degree in another field, you can decide to do the second degree. If you know you want to do the BS time, but you're not positive specialty. Maybe you're trying to decide what advanced practice nurse, she wanted the immediate between you know nurse midwifery.
In a family health nurse practitioner make your thinking of nursing a Sesia you're still trying to figure it out. You can apply to the second degree program. And once you're at Penn. You can then kind of determine your trajectory in terms of your career. The other option. We have is actually the BSN MSN to type out just ideas that I sent and that is for you, that, if you know your private specialty. I know I want to be a midwife. I know I'm going to go into pediatric acute care and concentrate on oncology whatever it is primary care, acute care oncology.
Family practice midwifery those are all of the different opportunities that you can apply to directly and you can apply the time of your applications. But the BSN MSN and then the hell maybe a second PhD if you're interested in completing your BSN in going directly to a PhD program in nursing, so this is really for the student who knows. They want to get a PhD whether it's because they want to do research and go into academia. Or maybe they want to work and research and maybe run research major healthcare system or in different research centers.
And just kind of go down that path they have a question. They really want to answer and this is the best place to come and get it. So this allows you to do your BSN followed by your PhD in nursing and the PhD is fully funded at Penn. So you're fully funded for 4 years of your PH D and there's a scholarship of about.
$80,000 thirty of which or 30 or 35 with just shorts for BSN and then the rest is towards the PhD program.
Sabrina Emms
12:06:59 PM
In the BS/MSN, are you fixed in the MSN program from the outset of the BSN?
Alright program start dates or program starting June, up every year.
Starts in June every year, the length of the BSM is 18 months. So it doesn't matter if you coming, second degree. You come in BSN MSN if you coming through the Hillman program, the length of the BSM is 18 months and all of you are together as one cohort for the full 18 months of the program so the VSM starts in June of 2020. You finish your BSN December of twenty twenty one that program that that time on campus. You're together as 1 full group.
Here at Penn so whether you're a second degree. BSN MSN her PhD you all do the BFM together. You're one cohort together and then the length of the graduate specialty really depends on the special tape that you chose them so nurse practitioner specialties are between 12 and 16 months full time are nurse midwifery and administration specialties or 18 months and the nursing procedure program is 3 years full time. Please note currently applicants cannot apply to the BSN.
Directly into the nursing program at time of application, but you can come in as a second degree student and once you're here, you can apply until matriculate into any one of our graduate specialties, including nursing esthesia so the cohort who started last summer. We had at least 3:00 to 5:00. I don't know the exact number of Pi Square anesthesia program for summer tribulation and all of them were admitted into the nursing station specialty course. It's not guaranteed and we'll talk more about some matriculation. But I just wanted to mention that you can apply at time of application, said that specialty.
All of our other graduate specialties, including the PhD you can apply to.
The beauty of the accelerated program is that we're a national program. We have students from all over the country international students as well. Our goal is to admit a class of about 85 to 90 students to matriculate a classic 85 to 90 students. We have an administrator between 25 and 30%. We have over 600 apps every year and we're a national program so our students come to us from over 17 states and we also have.
I mentioned before have international students and that can change some years that I like 3 or 4. Some years of slower at 1:00 or 2:00 but we definitely have representation across the US sometimes abroad underrepresented minorities were over 20%. That number can definitely be improved on, but everyone comes into the accelerated program with a different perspective different experiences. You know that's the beauty of this program is that you learn from each other.
Much as you learn from the faculty of students who wear you know graduates at the peace who completed the peace core an are returning peace. Core volunteers in the program. They have Masters degree. Students who were in liberal arts majors went out and did. Maybe not not worked in non for profits for years and decided on nursing. We have our biology or psychology. Majors have gone in thinking research, making site and realizing nursing was it could fit for that art major stance majors. You name it there going into nursing and it just adds to the diversity of the.
He coloured once you're here.
The timeline so this is we pretty much stick to this timeline for the most part we very rarely.
Iona Brown
12:10:43 PM
Random Question but is there a specialty for Cardiology at all? Or something close to it?
You know detour so the first thing is the application deadline is October 15th of this year. Hopefully many of you were able to start the application application deadline. October 15th and know that we're not rolling admissions or early decision or anything like that. We don't really look at the applications until after October 15th so feel free to start it now. Get your recommenders their information. But then in the system. You know there's a video interview, which will talk about that. You definitely want to just maybe practice beforehand.
Let's start out the application, but just know there's no need to apply early. We don't look at it till after the deadline. We go to committee at the end of January and we notify all of our applicants in early February of 2020 in our program begins in mid June.
Prerequisite courses I'm not gonna spend a lot of time on this 'cause I know many of you may have very specific questions and you can always chat at the end, will take those questions at the end, but the 1st and foremost keep the prerequisite courses. Simple intro courses into me Physiology. Part one and Part 2 or one semester of intro to Human Anatomy, one semester country, human Physiology. We don't want an animal anatomy or Physiology course. We don't want a comparative anatomy, Physiology course we wanted to be focused exclusively on human.
And human based Internet can you only one semester one semester 1/4 of chemistry one semester of intro to bio uh lab is not required, but we do require biology a semester of microbiology with lab a semester of intro, nutrition, a semester intro to staff as well. So if you keep it simple and introductory you will accept the credits usually without any problems. We will accept on line courses including lab Sciences, so if you have to take them on line 'cause you're working or?
Your schedule doesn't permit you to take a class you know like you can do that as well.
Jessica Porter
12:12:29 PM
How long are the courses good for? Like if I took the class 5+ years ago, is it still good?
We you can take the courses at a local Community College as well, or 4 year institution. Whatever works for you, just make sure that that University or college is accredited that's the most important.
Application requirements, so we talked a little bit about the application. The great thing about our application is everything is done. We used this plate application system. You apply on Line 90% of your information is submitted.
So personal statement there's a statement on there. We really want to know why nursing why pan? What are your goals? How spending to help you reach those goals to really what we're looking for it? It's really important.
There's a lot of wonderful health care careers out there. There's a lot of career options where you can have clinical experience and work, but you can also have 101 patient care. You can go into research. There's so many different things. You can do. Why is the nursing the right fit for you want to make sure you take the time to explain that that personal statement. I know you hear this all the time. It is a huge part of your application. It's really where we get the gist of everything and the wire wire here my replying.
So definitely make take the time to write an essay that really answers. Those questions and the question prompt is on the application.
2 recommendations are required for the accelerated program. We recommend a minimum of one academic recommendation so.
Erin McMullen
12:14:06 PM
Can you explain the funding opportunity for the BSN/PhD option again?
That's what we recommend if you've been out of college for 5:00 to 10 years and you don't have an academic rack that spine. I personally to have a competitive application. You should either have an academic rap or supervisor rap. So, your two recommendations should either be academic based or supervisors. You can submit up to 3 recommendations and that's where your 3rd rack could be a mentor maybe your volunteer supervisor.
Someone that you've shadowed for over a year and they can talk a little bit about your character in your in your interest in the field. But it's really important that to be competitive. You have at least in academic and or supervisor rack combination of the 2:00 only academic only supervisor depending on where you are in your life trajectory, but those are the 2:00 that I think at the most.
Had the most impact your application.
All of your college transcript so this has changed a little bit so Please note. You do not have to submit official transcripts to pen you have to upload unofficial copies to your application and that will move the application through all of its stages. If you are accepted into the program and you decide to attend 10. We will that need all official transcripts from you so just it'll save you some money save you some time get copies from all of your colleges get them home scan them into your computer and then you can upload them to the application as well.
Resume this is really important, and I know just to know this is not a work resume. It doesn't have to be a page long. It can be 2 pages. It can be up to 3 pages. I mean, there's solid content in there. The most important thing. There's a couple of things to the resume them. One of the most important is that you want to highlight your exposure to health care and on the next slide. We're going to talk about what we're looking for an admissions committee in the resume can help kind of streamline that piece of it, so really highlight your healthcare exposure whether it's on tier.
Work research horse work up a personal health care experience, helping a family member being a caregiver caretaker even if it's a fur family member. You really get to see the ends and outs of what it means to be a patient with chronic illness that care that they're receiving whether it's good or bad and the differences between the channels so I think that's really important.
The other thing on your resume is don't forget to include all the other wonderful stuff. You do it does not have to be a healthcare focus resume, meaning you could only include healthcare related or nursing related information. You should highlight that piece highlight healthcare highlight nursing, but include all the other stuff avid biker marathon runner speak 4 languages have traveled all over the visited over 10 countries. In 4 different continents. Whatever it is that you want to tell us.
You want to know your hobbies you know you're an avid reader you're interested in sci-fi. I know it. Sounds crazy, but we really want to try to get to know the applicant as much as possible to include some of that? Great stuff that you've done if you you know, we're part of Performing Arts group put that on your resume. We want to see that you know if you are a musician. You love playing the Violet. Please put them in application. We want to see all of those things you know if you've been playing the panel since you were 7.
Put it on there. Let us know that you've got all these other interests that are only going to.
Enhance the experience in the classroom, but also enhance your careers. You go out there into the field so definitely don't forget to include part time jobs volunteer whether it's related or not related. Club organizations honors awards. Everything on your breast events, so it can be 2 or 3 pages.
The Jerry if you were planning to our home in different a PhD the juries are required. There's absolutely no way around it. You want to aim for the 60th percentile. If you're applying to our home in BSN to PhD program.
Applicants to the BSN MSN are actually eligible for a gra waiver if their bachelors degree is 3.5. Three point two or higher.
Now, for the bachelors degree if you're currently in your undergraduate education and you will be finishing your bachelors degree. This December or next may as long as your GPA on your transcript is a 3.2 or higher, at time of application that Jerry is waived if you completed a graduate degree maybe an MPH Masters in counseling education. But Microbiology Biology. Whatever it is your weight from taking the graduate from taking the Jerry no matter what your GPA is.
OK, so just know that we have that Jerry waiver for those of you interested in the vehicle that was sent program interview.
So the video we just incorporated a video interview to the application. You know the video interview is really an opportunity for us to get to know you a little bit better.
Katherine Shepherd
12:19:18 PM
Does the GRE waiver also apply to the accelerated BSN program?
You're gonna have question prompts which is basically you know why we chose in nursing, where your goal. What are your goals? What are you excited about a pen and how are you going to contribute to our kind of community whether it's the canvas. The nursing school. The city of Philadelphia. What do you hope to do while you're here and what are you bringing to the school the video interview is?
Tanya Monahemi
12:19:24 PM
Do you take in to account the GPA of your prerequisites if you have been out of college for a long time?
You have I think up to maybe I'm gonna say like 5 minutes or so to answer those questions. You could do a practice run just make sure that you all your equipment is working. You definitely have to do it on a laptop or desktop computer. It won't work on any cell phones, etc. After you've done your practice test it all. The systems definitely do a dry run of the video then you have 2 options. You can record. The video once and if you don't like it, you can do it again and recorded the second time.
OK so just practice prior to recording the last 2 times, so that you've got a good idea what you'd like to say. And definitely talk about yourself and give us a good sense of why you're here. It's kind of it's going to supplement that personal statement and that resume.
Iona Brown
12:20:20 PM
Do you consider coursea that have been retaken at least once?
So that's the video interview and then there are financial aid forms that you have to be filled out in our deadlines. After this shopper, so will send that information out as well.
What is the admissions committee looking for so this is really where pens approach to the admissions process?
It's better that we definitely have a holistic approach to the admissions process here at Penn and there's numerous reasons for that.
Everyone is coming from a different point in their life.
It's from a coming straight from undergrad. Some of it out for 10 years. We have been in the workforce and they're coming back to nursing. Some have only been out for a few years. Others have completely different degrees for like 1520 years and are coming into Interstate so we'd only do a holistic approach. But I will say there's 2 sides that we're always looking at for each applicant so the one side is really the academic qual quantitative side of your application. So the undergraduate GPA. We strongly recommend the average GPA of the middle class is roughly 3.5.
But please Please note. We do admit students under a 3.0 and we also deny high. GPA's as well. We've denied for PO noise owes 3.9 three point 8 all the time.
'Cause the GPA is one aspect of your application. I will say the further away. You are from underground. The less important your GPA becomes right so if you went to undergrad 5 years ago. You were in English major that GPA is less important than your current courses that you're taking and all the stuff. You've done in between. Those flag years, so just kind of keep a note of that the GDP is one aspect, but it's not everything for us.
The other piece that's really, really important by your side streets strongly recommend that you do well on your anatomy and Physiology courses in anything. You've recently completed for so for those students who took chemistry. Freshman year 6 years ago. About a see that's not going to be that devastating to your application.
You took chemistry last semester and didn't do as well. That's harder to overcome because you're starting a program within less than a year so anything you're taking over the next year. Anything you've taken over the last 2 years and specifically anatomy and Physiology. You want to make sure that you have strong great symbols.
And, please, now we do look at your GPA if you are a science major Biochem neuroscience. We know that your undergraduate GPA will be a little bit lower could be a little bit lower than someone else who didn't take as many Sciences or have an intensive so we look at each individual applicant. Holistic Lee and we look at. When did you graduate from undergrad or you still there? What was your major? What classes did you take that's right thing and your recommendations can definitely help so if your GPA is on the lower end.
You want to have more academic wrecked to really talk about your academic abilities to talk about your leadership in the classroom. The fact that you're inquisitive that you ask great questions that you're involved in the class and involved in their learning and those are things that we look for as we're trying to figure out the application.
The other thing uh so we have science rates so that's the quantitative side. That's all your math all the numbers piece. The other piece, honestly can actually help a student was a lower undergraduate it can also hurt someone with a really high GPA and that isn't exposure to health care. We want students have taken the time to make sure that nurses for them. We want to know that they have. Maybe shadowed a nurse practitioner. Maybe they volunteer at a hospital. Maybe they voluntarily clinic but nursing Home Planned Parenthood.
If you've taken care of a family member whose been ill and you've seen them you take them to appointments and you understand the dynamics of the health care system and you could express that that's what we're looking for whether it's through research experience or clinical experience or personal experience. We want to see that you have exposure to health care and that you have a good understanding of the role of nursing and why nursing is a good fit for you and that exposure just gives confidence to the fact that you've definitely taken the time to review this in our comfortable with this information.
So, please make sure that you highlight all those things if you don't have a lot of them You know reach out to different organizations. You could be a caregiver. You could be companion for an elderly person. There's a lot of stuff out there and in those experiences. You'll come into contact with other healthcare professionals and it'll give you could.
Briana Mitchell
12:25:11 PM
Is shadowing experience something that we should include on our resume? If so, what format should we put that information in? What would that look like?
View on White Horse, it's a good fit for you so she is important to us so you definitely want to talk about that and then talk to you as an applicant to really highlight that highlighted in your personal statement on your resume. Maybe your professors could talk about it. Maybe your supervisor can talk about it talk about how involved you are all the activities from things that you've taken into account.
So that's kind of what we're looking for that just in a nutshell like I said holistic approach to the review. We look at each applicant individually. You know, so we do admission to have a 3.0. Two point nine 2.8, but have amazing exposure and really strong recent science courses and then vice versa, so.
Alison Giannone
12:26:01 PM
my screen is frozen on a previous slide, does anyone know how to fix this?
Katherine Shepherd
12:26:04 PM
Is there a minimum number of hours of experience you would recommend before applying?
Graduate specialties so graduate specialty archives, so we have 11 graduate program that you can choose from at the time of application. Currently, you can choose all of these specialties as a BSN MSN. Today, except for nurse anesthesia because it is currently a DMP programmer. We're not offering that option for applicants at time of application.
OK, um, so these are the this gradual specialties. We have a whole bunch of them now.
Being a BSN MSN student or coming in second degree and applying through some matriculation I will say.

thank you!
You have all of these benefits so whether you come in DS and MSN or you come in BSN second degree in applied for MSN and EMP and become a direct entry student once you're here all of these points apply to you so 10 programs can be completed part time or full time nurse anaesthesia in nurse midwifery are full time only programs and certain programs require work experience so let's say you know you want to go to adult in general.
Acute care within oncology special, um my arm.
You can apply BSN MSN 2 are adult and Gerald program for an apology and no that if admitted to both the BSN in the MSN you are wait. You are required to work as an RN in oncology for at least a year. Prior to coming back for your MSN which means you finish your 18 month BSN program. You become a licensed RN and you work as an RN in that field so that's what the work requirement is an we require one year of work experience in Pete's critical care, acute chronic and oncology.
In adult acute care specialties is a minimum of one year that includes the oncology specialty as well.
Neonatal requires 2 years of Work Experience Aniku Trauma Level 3. I think and then nursing. Esthesia, technically on the books that requires one year. But you will be out of year, you will be working for almost 2 years prior to starting the nursing station program so those require work experience all of our primary care programs midwifery in all primary care, Dalton Jail family Pediatrics.
They do not require work experience so technically you can go straight through there is a break of about 5:00 to 6:00 months between the DSM in the MSN for those specialties because you have to be a licensed RN and then you also need reciprocity in the state of New Jersey and Delaware. Just so you know more will tell you there's a hundred million times before you get to that point. But just wanted to kind of let you know that if you decide to do acute care. You have to work as a nurse, but you can still apply the accepted in your spot be saved.
Um or you can apply primary care and you can go straight through with a little bit of a break.
Now, being a DSL Anderson still allows you to take 3 courses by count torture MSN or DMP while you're finishing your BSN. You also are not her locked into your specialty MSN level. Now, if you we definitely have students this year, actually had a student came in adult and Gerald primary care. BSN MSN just talked her today. She decided she wanted to be a nurse anesthetist and apply to the nursing. This T-shirt program. I was accepted into the nursing teacher program so she switched your specialty.
There is no guarantee in switching but you have the opportunity and you can request a switch for nursing. Esthesia 990% of the time they do ask you to submit some sort of application through some calculation.
The other Masters programs a lot of times you just meet with the program director. I talked to them about why you're going to go from FNP to Women's Health, while you're going to go for Women's Health. This like NP? Why maybe midwifery to family family to midwifery and you discuss those in a lot of times it's a personal statement in an interview when you can't change your mind.
So most students will change their mind mother in the DSM program because of all the clinical experiences that you have other students will decide.
That after they've been in the workforce. They want to switch I will say there's no guarantee in switching but the opportunity? Is there so we do have students were not accepted into their new program of choice for a variety of different reasons, but just know that it's an option.
We also give all of our students, 5 years to complete the MSN from the date of their BSN completion, so all of our BS and then uh some students whether you come in BSN. MSN weather, you coming, second degree in some matriculate into the Masters or DMP. You have up to 5 years to complete those degrees.
Katherine Shepherd
12:30:35 PM
Is it possible to apply for both the accelerated BSN program and the BSN/MSN program in the same year?
Very very important you have to let us know when you want to come back. So we hold your spot. You can defer your start date one time, but you have up to 5 years, so if you know you're going to work for 3 years. You Mark yourself. I'll be back in 3 years. We marked you in the book a year before the 3 years is up. You come back and say, I'm coming back. I'm ready to start your spot saved and you can start clinicals that following year. So lots of opportunities better and then we also allow a lot of our students will decide to work full time as an RN.
And go to school part time and the other side program and as I mentioned some programs can be done part time. But sometimes so definitely lots of flexibility. Once you finish those first 18 months, but you can't those 18 months cannot be short. And they can be extended if needed, but it can't be short and it's a very structured program or the Masters program. We definitely allow students a little bit more flexibility part time full time time off work variety of different options.
So this is a sample plan of study for our accelerated program as I mentioned it starts June of 2020 it ends December of 2021.
And within this 18 months, you're going to learn about your going to have experiences to all populations.
Pediatrics adult Gerald Women's half as well as a neonatal burfi end of life care and settings alot of your experiences will be inpatient hospital based settings, but we do have a community and some other outpatient experiences for students as well. So you're really going to get a good sense of settings and populations, which can really help students hone in on what they want to do and if they can't decide what they want to do that.
We start with Luminate what they know they don't want to do, which happens all the time. Students will be like, I'm deciding between these 2 things I know I don't want to do Pediatrics in general. They're not for me. I'm going to work with adults. I just have to figure out if I went inpatient or outpatient. So you can kind of figure it out that way. RV FM program has sudden clinical experiences, which will talk a little bit about in a second and then within the clinical experience every clinical has electric component alot component.
And a clinical component in Clinicals or 12 to 16 hours a week of clinical depending on the experience. The last semester. It's going to be 24 hours. So to 12 hour shift a week for that capstone clinical which we'll talk about. In addition to that there's also 5 non clinical courses. Everyone has to take pathophysiology pharmacology course research course health policy course and our research residency course as well as.
A case study if in the case study is themed so it could be aggressive behavior oncology birthday in breastfeeding community outreach community partnerships things like that.
Critical placement so the one thing about pen that's really wonderful. We're located right on Penn's campus.
The beauty of being a pen nursing student is that your first and foremost the University of Pennsylvania students have access to the entire University and we're really lucky where urban campus. But the campus is truly, truly condensed within 20 blocks. So all 12 graduate schools, all for undergraduate schools are within those 12 blocks 20, only split the only pen facility. That's not there is our large Animal Hospital without the suckers.
Being authentic campus. We are also really, really fortunate to be right next to the hospital University, Pennsylvania, which is also on campus. One of the top 10 hospitals in the country Pennsylvania Hospital is downtown Philadelphia. It's only a
Iona Brown
12:34:42 PM
I dont have much direcr health experience. For mt resume, what should I put do help me best stand out?
The $20 from us give are take Presbyterian Medical Center is 6 blocks North of campus. Those 3 hospitals. Those first three listed. There are part of the University of Pennsylvania health system that part of the pen health system of this seven clinicals your met surgeon general rotations are always at hub or Presbyterian Medical Center Children's Hospital, Philadelphia. It's not affiliated dependent independent but we're so lucky. It's right next to Penn's campus, you can actually see it from the nursing building.
And the number to Children's Hospital in the country. An all of our clinical pediatric clinical czar through Children's Hospital, Philadelphia.
We also have the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, which is 3 blocks North of us. I'm sorry 3 blocks West of us, so within walking distance. So the majority of the hospital. I just mentioned are within walking distance of the nursing school and three of your stomach clinicals will definitely be a one of those hospitals that I mentioned.
Then we also have some suburban hospitals like in a hospital, which is out in the suburbs. They only hospitals. Also on suburbs. You know, we do use. Those 2 hospitals for Rob clinic also only can be at Pennsylvania hospital like and I'll pay only in some other community hospitals out nearly as well as the hospital University of Pennsylvania.
Then we also have our community location, so community. Health is throughout the city of Philadelphia. I mean, you could be in a Hospice center in Hospice Hospital, which is only a few blocks away from us, but you could also be doing home health. So you'll be committing to different peoples homes. We have person sites. We have clinics behavior health centers. Schools anything that's outpatient and those community called clinicals can be anywhere in the Metro.
This year, they've actually started and hopefully it continues for next summer. But this summer. Our students have the opportunity to do either one week or two week camp working at it overnight camp camp for sick children. So it's a summer camp and they worked in the.
They worked with the nurses on staff there and they were there for the full week or 2 full weeks.
And so it's like a mental health. Psych is also throughout the city of Philadelphia. We have a psych hospital in North Philly, Pennsylvania Hospital, which is downtown has an inpatient hospital floor. We also have the Methadone Clinic, which is right next door. Behavior health centers. You name it. So I would say for community insight chances are that you may have to commute.
You do not need a car for the BSN portion of the program. But you may need access to a car So what we do is we create an account of Philly car share Zipcar green car kind of system and we rent. The car and the students as long as I have a valid drivers license can have access to it. So you do not need a car for the BSN portion depending on your Masters program. You may need access to a car, which we will not provide at the Masters level. That's just to kind of give you an overview of the clinical experience.
You know the majority of our students look either in Center City. Philadelphia W Philly. You don't need a car. It's hard to park a car in Philadelphia cost a lot of money so definitely.
Just know that 'cause you're kind of considering op Ed.
So some of the opportunities that are available here pen, so some of the opportunities that are available. There's the simulation lab state of the art simulation lab, which everyone has access to there's a picture there. It is it can replicate a clinic setting. It can replicate in or Med. Surg critical care. You name it. It's a great place to learn. It's a great place to kind of figure out and get comfortable using and doing some of these skills.
But you need to do pen is a huge, huge research institution. If you have any interest whatsoever, even just a little bit of interest of doing research.

I know that we only need intro Chemistry as a prerequisite, but my advisor strongly advised me to take up to Organic Chemistry. Would taking Ochem help my application (or help me fulfill requirements further down the program), or should I focus my time on other experiences/classes?
It's a great place to beat a wonderful place to be the faculty are excited to have students work with them on research. You don't have to work on research just with faculty in the nursing school. I have students that are working at the hospital. University of Pennsylvania, doing research to Children's Hospital Asylum Department of biomedical building. You name and if there's something else that you want to do while you're here or if you've been a biology major for years and you're really, really interested in bio and you want to just do that research while you're here, you can go to the file Department do some bad science.
Whatever you're interested in you can do it while you're a pound so definitely consider getting involved.
Even though it's an accelerated program. You can have some exposure and some opportunities to get involved in research. You don't want to over commit so you want to do 5 to 8 hours a week. If you're going to be working for them.
A lot sooner organizations we have a lot of wonderful opportunities to get involved on campus.
And there's lots of information on our website about that. You could also email me, but we've got.
Interdisciplinary student run clinics that students can volunteer at we have student organizations dedicated to working interdisciplinary with other health care programs on campus.
Ethan Skinner
12:40:12 PM
are there research opportunities for oncology?
There's so many and then there's like fun ones where you can play like Club volleyball or ultimate Frisbee or have access to all of those organizations have a global health soon organizations choice, we have.
Brandon Hall
12:40:17 PM
@Iona have you volunteered at an outpatient facility, or community center? Or cared for family/friends? If any of that really made an impact on you that can be great resume stuff
Thank you. There's more there's just not coming to me. We also have combined program so if you're interested in a Masters of public health a Masters in bioethics or Masters in Business Administration. You can apply to those degrees while you're finishing your bachelors degree and complete them at the same time as your MSN or you can complete one and then the other. Maybe work full time for a couple of years finisher, Peach come back to your MSN full time you have a lot of different opportunities and flexibility there, so matriculation, so this is for a second degree students.
If you're still trying to figure out what specialty what area I know I'm not really sure what I want to do. Yet definitely come in second degree and once you're here, you can apply to any one of our graduate specialties.
Iona Brown
12:41:03 PM
@Brandon, sadly no. I was never able to volunteer during my undergrad years. I worked briefly
As long as you maintain a 3.2 BSN GPA you can apply to some matriculate into our Masters or DNP program students have the opportunity to take up to 3 graduate courses while they're finishing their BS dragon. Once they're admitted we have over 60 to 70% that applied for summit regulation and we have over 90% acceptance rate.
Study abroad these are just some of the abroad programs. They're not all of them are always adding new ones. I think we have a student who is in Peru. Right now, she was reading the website. She's on there and I'm pretty sure to tolerate it.
Up and she's in Peru, we have Penn Global, which is the University School.
Iona Brown
12:41:58 PM
@sorry Brandon. I worked briefly at a hospital through two temp agencies for a little while.
Iona Brown
12:42:05 PM
Would that help?
Resource on campus and some programs really fit nicely with accelerated students 'cause. It's a 2 or 4 week program and it. You can do it while you're on break. But these are specifically for nursing. So we've got Botswana, which this year. They didn't go too, so that might change. They're looking at maybe going to turn it out in the future. So we'll see what happens that trip is the only one is the only one that offers clinical experience abroad for accelerated students.
Thailand um Hong Kong, Latin America, Indian, Spain or short-term study abroad programs. Observationally, based programs where you can go abroad for 2 weeks at a time. Please note you just apply to them meet with the faculty directory and then be expected. Latin America is currently the only one that requires a language that has a language requirement and that does require Spanish.
Rashemiah Yates
12:42:52 PM
@Iona it should help
Penders being resources as I mentioned before your first and foremost the University of Pennsylvania student the nursing school itself were really small school more only about 1300 students from the VS into the PhD so everyone has access to the office of student services so you can get advising everyone is assigned a faculty impaired visor here in the nursing school so really wonderful small kind of.
Brandon Hall
12:42:59 PM
@Iona Absolutely! I'm not an expert ofc. And even if you start volunteering a few hours a week now could go a long way
Oluyinka Adelegan
12:43:19 PM
I am a veteran and want to ask, Do you offer the yellow Ribbon program especially towards the BSN-PhD?
Environment that's very, very, very supportive. We also all the resources of a large University. It's literally the best of both worlds. Great career services center a counseling center? Why Heart Learning Center of a tutoring center, which is part of the Learning Center. The Fit Health and fitness center, and that's just a snapshot. There's just so many resources on campus. We could never put them all on it, so just one thing as I wrap up. I know we've got some really awesome questions. So we're going to go back and do those as well. But.

Being a pen nursing student if there's anything you take away from today's women are is that there's a lot of great opportunities to supplement nursing education whether it's your research whether it's working in the city of Philadelphia and doing different volunteer experience is helping on campus running different student Orgs and student run clinics on campus. You have the resources of a large University access to the faculty to speakers that are coming here to come as well so definitely.
Kind of put that up that way in the back of your head 'cause the great thing about nursing up hang is that Europe N nursing student. We have access to all of those great resources.

Alex Himel

@ Brandon thank you!!
The chat section and can see the questions that are posted so in Sabrina email texted or chatted the following question in the BSN MSN? Are you fixed to an MSN program from the outset of ESN so you have to pick a specialty at the time of your application so right now. If you apply BSN MSN you must apply to a specific specialty. Once you're at Penn. You can request to switch specialties. It depends on the program director depends what you're switching into there's no guarantee.

I majored in the humanities in undergrad. Would it be acceptable to have my academic recommendation be from my major advisor, or would it be preferred to have a recommendation from a science professor?
But you can switch and you're not locked in if there's something that you find better a better fit for you not a better program.

If you meet the 3.2 GPA requirement, do you need to do anything in particular to apply for the GRE waiver or is that something that pops up automatically in the application?
Jessica Smith
12:45:34 PM
Are there any options to pay for a second bachelors degree besides financial aid, if you used out all of your available student loans during undergraduate when obtaining your first bachelors degree?
So for Cardiology I would say if you wanna be kind of in the ICU working with patients with heart transplants or sense or heart heart disease. You would probably want to do adult injera, acute care because that would allow you to work in the hospital environment working with acutely ill patients in Cardiology. You could also do adult and Gerald primary care and work with patients who maybe have chronic heart issues, but are stable patients, all outpatient.
Aaron Yagoda
12:45:42 PM
If you are eligible for a GRE waiver, is there still benefit to sending your GRE scores? Will those be used for admission?
Stefania Patinella
12:45:46 PM
Can you talk about the differences between pursuing an MSN track and a DSN track. What is the difference in opportunities at the end?
Education working with them, keeping unhealthy versus the hospital. So if you wanna work with it with acutely ill patients, which you can work acutely ill and not be in the hospital. But if you want to work with acute Bill Keightley, ill patients trauma patients. You want to do one of the acute care programs. If you kind of want to work with stable patients.
Um that's kind of how they defined that you want to do primary care.

How do our clinicals work? will we be on rotation?
How long will the course is good for uhm so it depends so anatomy and Physiology should definitely definitely be within the last 5 or 6 years we very rarely go over 6 years. All of the other courses can buy a nutrition. Stats Bill go over 10. Maybe 10 to 15. Micro we like to see within like at least 10 years. Just because there's always new viruses that are popping up and new information that it can can be part of that course.
Aaron Yagoda
12:46:37 PM
Is it possible for students to work as RNs part time/ per diem while in the MSN portion of the program?
So that's kind of where we are with those classes.
Elizabeth Moriarty
12:46:58 PM
If you took a summer course not for credit (external to your undergrad institution) do you need to submit those transcripts as well?
So the funding opportunity from the VSN the PhD so you're eligible for regular financial aid for the BSN portion. Betaza Hellman Scholar. There's an $80,000 scholarship. That's attached to it, so about 30 or 35,000 of it goes towards the BS. I'm education and towards the BSN funding the rest of it goes towards your PhD and then pending nursing will fund the other. I think it's 3, 1/2 years of the PhD full funding for the PhD.
Room and board tuition and fees for the first three years after 3 years. You have to pay for room and board, it's not funded.

I already have a BSN from another university is there any special requirements to apply for the MSN in psych??

I am in process of finishing up my pre-requisites for the program. I am enrolled for this upcoming fall to take AP1, Chem 1, and statistics. Should I wait until next October to apply or should I go ahead and apply for this October? I will be completed all pre-reqs by May!!!
The Jerry so the accelerated BSN program does not require the jury so you don't have to worry about taking that Jerry if you're applying to be accelerated. BSN second degree program. The Jerry waiver is if you're applying to the VSMSM track if you know the MSN specialty will apply to.
Jazmin Cornish
12:47:37 PM
Are their merit based financial aid options/opportunities for students accepted into the BSN Second Degree Program
And next question is, do you take into account the GPA of your prerequisites if you ever been out of college for a long time? Yes, of course, definitely so I will say the undergraduate GPA that we look at the when we say GPA we look at your undergraduate degree GPA so the GPA where your degree with convert an any courses. You took prior to your degree being convert. We will include into that GPA.
Delys Luma
12:48:07 PM
The Accelerated program attracts students with non nursing degrees. But then the admissions committee pays attention to health care exposure. So is there any advice you can give to students who do not have a ton of health care experience?
Katherine Shepherd
12:48:35 PM
Would AP test scores fulfill any of the prerequisites?
Ashley Sochanchak
12:48:36 PM
I also heard that statistics would have to be completed within 5 years for 2020 admission instead of 10 years. I took it 8 years ago. Should I plan to retake it?
Anything after that, we look at specifically but it does not get incorporated into your GPA but we specifically look at the prerequisite courses. If you look at the application. We specifically ask students, like have you taken anatomy yes? What's your grade? When did you take it. So we want to see how you did, in those classes, so if you've taken everything after undergrad. The science courses will definitely be looked at we don't do a science GPA perspective because everyone's finishing these prereqs at different times.
Somehow, along completed when they apply some have half completed when they apply so it's really hard to have an accurate science, GPA just because not everyone has all the forces completed.
Prayosha Villa
12:49:00 PM
I got a B- in Microbiology. Do you recommend retaking this course?
Do you consider courses that I'm going to be taken at least once? Yes, we will we definitely well so if you took anatomy Physiology. Let's say 4 years ago, you're not crazy about the grade retaking it does not hurt you at Penn.
Um is shadowing experience something that we should include on a resume still what format should we put that information. So I if you've shadowed I would definitely definitely definitely put it on your resume. I think sometimes what might be helpful is like, at the beginning of the resume maybe after your education is just like healthcare related experiences and you can kind of list them. So you can list the shadowing you could even less personal caretaker research experience, even if you had a job in clinical. You could list. It there and then under work experience is you can go into a little bit.
Less detail or more detailed depending so let's say you worked as a CNA at the hospital. You should listen under the health care related experiences.
Aaron Yagoda
12:49:58 PM
Do students need to find their own clinical placements for the MSN portion of the program?
Elaborate on it, there and maybe just not mention or not elaborate as much under the work experience. If you've been out of college. We definitely want to see your work history, what you been doing since you graduated from undergrad.
Massa Sammah
12:50:11 PM
For the video interview, do you suggest we create a brief response that addresses all the questions? Or should we record the answer to each question separately?
Question is there a minimum number of hours of experience. You would recommend we don't, they don't actually really look at the hours to us and just overall exposure. Sometimes, like I mentioned before we have students who are doing research so you know it's a full time job there in a 40 hours a week and then sometimes we have a student who is taking care of a family member and there's no way to quantify that so we really don't look at ours. We don't require and a lot of programs will say you must have 1000 hours of the health care experience.
We don't do that, so as long as you have the experience that is that you can discuss about the the best thing is that the experience. You have can address why nursing and you can kind of pull them into your personal statement. I think that would be great.
Is it possible to apply for both the accelerated BSN MSN program in the BSN program at the same time at this time, no, but if you apply. Let's say you apply you can only pick one or the other, but let's say you apply BSN MSN. It is possible to be denied to the Masters, but accepted to the bachelors, so just to note that it is very much possible that the faculty will decide that it's not a good fit for you for family. That's a really, really, really popular program. But we really feel like you'd be a great fit for the BSN.
Aaron Yagoda
12:51:31 PM
Are you able to share any admissions statistics for the BSN/MSN program? Roughly how many applications you receive and the acceptance rate?
Nursing get here get some more exposure specific to family and then you can re apply to family. So plan BS and MSN kind of allows you both 'cause. We will admit you into second degree, even if you're not committed to Masters.
It's very rare but it can happen, there's probably 3:00 to 5:00 students. A year that would be denied to the master specialty, but we will admit them to bachelors component.
Alrighty next question is, I don't have much direct healthcare experience? What should I put to help me best stand out.
Alex Himel
12:52:08 PM
Does UPenn have any education or opportunities with telehealth?
Tanya Monahemi
12:52:12 PM
If you started an application as BSN can you switch it to BSN/MSN?
I think I will just put whatever you have hopefully you have some health care experience you know it's not.
It's really up to the student to kind of express' why nursing so I we have students have done.
A lot of maybe nonprofit work. Maybe volunteered like I just do volunteer at the food bank for almost a year 2 years. So when you looked at her resume didn't look like she had a lot of healthcare related experiences. But then you go to the personal statement. And she talks about how she saw community members who are diabetic community members have hypertension who were struggling with obesity things like that. But they didn't have access to healthy foods. They didn't understand. You know there how to manage their chronic.
Illness and it was her experience in the food bank that led her to nursing so sometimes it's not as easy. It's not as direct test. I volunteered at the hospital. I shadowed in RN or NP. Sometimes it's kind of round about working with the community working with a group of people and realizing.
The way you're helping them You feel like you could do more by going into the healthcare field. So also really think about all of your experiences even if it doesn't.
Aaron Yagoda
12:53:28 PM
What is the program's pass rate for the NCLEX after the BSN program and the ANCC/AANP certifications post MSN?
Fall into direct healthcare you can still really address. You know if you do, I have a student did a lot of work with?
Rosmery Rodriguez

Hi Filomena ... 1. Can we have an idea of what our day to day is going to look like? Would our days be only lecture and have specific days for clinicals or can we expect them to possibly be both in one day? 2. I participated in two abroad programs yet my college did not consider the grade so my UG GPA reflects 6 semesters instead of 8. Would Penn consider the abroad grades as part of the UG GPA? 3. Would there be an open house sometime during the fall to visit the university? 4. Would you recommend working part-time during the ABSN portion or is it recommended for students to not work at all? Thank you!!
The needle exchange program in Boston. She was dedicated to the homeless population. So you know her work. Indirectly was related to health care in the sense of a lot of these patients were having health issues an overdosing and things like that.
And it was through that experience that led her to Healthcare, which led her to nursing so there are ways to be involved in healthcare that all paper doesn't seem like it's directly related but as an application. You can make those connect those dots for us.
I know that we only need Intrada Camassa Prereq, My Advisor strongly advise me to take up to organic Cam for nursing. Organic chemistry will not is not required at all. If you're thinking of going into nursing esthesia you may want to consider taking it to not requirement. That's definitely good to have that background. But we do not look. We do not require again. It cab obviously if you take it will look at it will see how well you did or etc. But it's not required so it will not technically help you.
But if you need it for your degree etc. You can't take it.
Ethan Skinner
12:54:59 PM
Thank you!!
Are there research opportunities for ecology? Yes, definitely we actually have the Perlman center here and there's a lot of wonderful research going on in college and give the breast Cancer Center here doing a lot of research and oncology. We also faculty that do research in nursing with oncology and a lot of the pediatric research with oncology that looks at family dynamics be effects on the family to have a patient with oncology in the hospital and how it affects family. Dynamic so there's a lot of different angles, but definitely a lot of research going on.
At the University overall from college.
Aaron Yagoda
12:55:32 PM
Roughly what does tuition look like for the BSN/MSN program?
I'm a veteran OK I'm I'm a veteran. Thank you for yourself. I want to ask, do you offer the yellow ribbon program, especially towards BSN to PhD? We do offer the Yellow Ribbon Program, I will say I'm not sure how much we match. I think there's like a matcher number that we give I don't know that if you want to email me directly my email. This page back up email me directly. I will forward it to financially to just get some more information, I know we have it.
But I'm not sure how much covers for the BSN portion. You'll be covered for the PhD because we fully fund. Three of your 4 years with the room and board living stipend, etc. And then the 4th year, you do have to find funding for room and board and letting expects us but we find your tuition and fees if you're here for 4 years.
Oh so the giri so if you're taking the Jerry's for the BSN MSN program option. You should be around the 50th percentile for the math and verbal so 150 and 50th percentile. 'cause sometimes you can be 50th percentile will be 140 something to be competitive. I would say 1:50 and 50th percentile for the BF MSN if you're applying tournament program. I strongly recommend being Amy towards the 60th percentile.
Alright so I majored in Humanities, an undergrad, but would it be acceptable to have my academic recommendation before my major advisor or would it be preferred to have a recommendation from a science professor great great question. It should be from someone that knows you really, really well so I would do your major advisor, sometimes having a science professor if you've only had them once you don't really know that there was a big classroom that recommendation is not going to be the same.
Simran Sharma
12:57:39 PM
Do you have an ADN to BSN program?
In patent someone who's maybe had your 2 or 382 or 3 classes. Maybe is your advisor. So definitely pick the professor that knows you best set a timer so you might have only had a science professor for one semester, but they asked you to be a TA that's different story right good relationship they can talk about your leadership skills your ability in the field that sort of thing, but I would go for whoever Mills me back. It will write the bus recommendation so it does not have to be assigned.
Does it hurt you this her application if you're a senior in undergrad having completed amp at this is from Jasmine. It really depends when you're completing any P if you're completing anatomy, Physiology, both in the spring. It's not great. If you're completing part one of the part 2 series in the fall. It's fine because you can email us your final grade at the end of December before we go to committee. It also depends what your major is if you write intensive science major.
There are science bio Chem bio can you name it, you know that's going to be it's going to be less important not having anatomy Physiology, but if you're an English major and you don't have a P and you don't have a lot of scientists completed that's harder to overcome in the application.
So the next question is, do all the prereqs have to be taken for a letter Grade I took nutrition as a pass fail alright, so great questions so this is from an Barber so if you completed a course.
Pass fail if your transcript says that the pass is equivalent to a seer higher and it's on the transcript like on the backside with all of the codes and notes and stuff, then you're fine. You do not have to take that class if a pass is equivalent to a deer higher. We may need you to take that class, but a lot of times the greatest actually saved somewhere, even though it's pass fail clubs, so sometimes we can get a letter from the registrar from your professor.
Anne Marie Barber
12:59:43 PM
Thank you!
That says you have a seer higher in that class, we can put the grade so it really depends on where you got where you took the class what the past. No pass means on your transcript. And if you can get an actual letter grade for maybe the registrar.
Next, question, if you're applying for a Gene Twenty Twenty. One is the latest have to complete your pre. Recs perfect so if all the requisite courses must be completed.
By May 31st of 2020, so you can apply why you're completing your prereqs, but you cannot start unless they've been completed.
So we always have I say 50% if not more of our accelerated Co? Where are taking something that spring just make sure it ends by may 31st?
Um if you meet the 3.2 GPA requirements. You need to do anything in particular, to apply for the waiver. You don't have anything particular. I think you can check off Gerry Weber on the actual application and then we reconfirm your GPA and we officially leave the Jerry but there's nothing you have to do.
Except that the transcript so easy your final GPA.
Um are there any options to pay for a second bachelors degree before expending jalade if you use all of your available student loans or undergrad when updating your first bachelors degree so Jessica. It's hard. I'm sorry. I didn't talk about financial aid here so.
Financially, that pen is a combination of Grants Scholarship and loans.
The grant is completely based on financial need, and the grants can be anywhere from 0 to $40,000 a year in grant funding.
Nicole Holland
01:01:13 PM
How much is the tuition for this program?
Ethan Skinner
01:01:27 PM
in the application, there is a section that says "Office Verification Code" Is this something that we should fill out with a code?
Scholarship is completely based on your application in different criteria and parameters and we've different little scholarships that might be like, you know Pennsylvania resident that stomach someone who is in English major who son meant and those are all internal you don't apply for them and they're given out and it's anywhere from 0 to $20,000 in scholarship. The rest of it is loans. Most of our students are eligible for the federal direct loans. If you've maxed out of your undergraduate direct loans. You would have to take out alternative loans.
To pay for the difference?
I'm not going to sugarcoat it, I will say.
Iona Brown
01:01:50 PM
For people like me who is retaking certain courses: do you take the average of all the grades of the repeated courses, or do you only consider the best grade of the class that I repeated?
Portion of the program is lone heavy.
OK so just want to put that out there.
Just so everyone knows even with the best financial aid package. There's definitely a large loan component to the program.
Tanya Monahemi
01:02:12 PM
Did this just abruptly end?
Jazmyn Nemid Mustafa
01:02:25 PM
What is the funding like for the MSN portion?
Ethan Skinner
01:02:30 PM
@Tanya - still going
Brandon Hall
01:02:37 PM
@ Tanya no, try refreshing
Emily Krause
01:02:39 PM
Can you cover taking pre-reqs online?
If you're eligible for a jeering waiver is there still benefit descending your Jerry Scores. Yes, definitely this is a question from Aaron Aaron. Yes, you can definitely send your jeries course what I would do is if you've already taken your Jerry's 4th. Please just put them on the application and don't request a waiver because then we'll see your Jerry scores if you request a waiver. We won't pull in your jeries forceful will never see them. So definitely just put in your jury scores. You don't have to wave them and then have the scores officially effects will pull.
But make sure you include them on the actual application, so that we know look for them. Otherwise, it will look and say, Oh, GPA 3.2 checked off jury waiver. We're not going to look for the juries and we're not going to upload them to your app. So you just want to make sure that you just put in your scores in the actual application.
Um Stephanie asked of Sophia asked, can you talk about the difference between pursuing an MSN and a DSM track?
Alex Himel
01:03:13 PM
1. If you get in the BSN/MSN program and decide you want to apply for a DNP is it possibe to do that and is there a possibility of recieving aid for the DNP?
So it depends it depends how you're asking that question so at Penn.
There's the DNP the Doctor of nursing practice. DNP doctored in nursing practice, which is a terminal degree for clinical. Nurses percent at Penn. We have both the MSN and the DMP. Currently, the MSN program allows you to finish the clinical advanced practice program in nurse practitioner as a nurse practitioner or as a.
Nurse midwife clinically and you would get an MSN degree at the end are MSN programs are a lot shorter than our deep than DMP programs are out in the country in the rebel the US are MSN programs are 12 to 18 months full-time where DMP programs can be up to 3 years. Full time so you can start working as a nurse practitioner as a Masters prepared nurse.
Alex Himel
01:04:28 PM
2. if you scored in the 60th percentile on the GRE, but got a 3.5 on the writing is it better to waive the GRE?
Within 12 to 18 months of finishing your MSN program and then you can always do a post Masters DNP, which will be completely online. It could take a year full time or 2 years. Part time and our program will be online as a fall 2020.
So students can come in BSN. MSN finished a nurse practitioner certification get their Masters degree go into the workforce and then do the DMP later.
If your nurse anesthesia the certifying board that certifies nurse anesthetist, said that by twenty twenty five. We are requiring a DMP so our nursing a seizure program changed to a DNP program at this time.
Lilly Lin
01:05:12 PM
I also am applying to study abroad programs like the Fulbright. If, miraculously, I get accepted to both your program and another study abroad program at the same time, would I have to reapply for your program if I decide to study abroad first?
For the nurse practitioner tracked and the nurse midwifery those certification boards are not requiring a DNP at this time, so you can sit for the exam via an MSN or a DMP degree so pen at this time has not changed. Those tracks to DMP but you will be able to actually talking about Italy soon fingers crossed up doing some matriculation into the DMP once you're in the asset so you'll still have the opportunity to do the DMP. It's just that pens offering an MSN track.
Um for their nurse practitioner nursing with free because the certification board isn't requiring a DNP and it really depends where you are in the United States. I mean, most hospitals. Most employers are looking for the certification versus the degree. But that can change depending on the region of the country that you're right.
I hope that answers your question it's a very.
It can that question can go on the answer can go on in the conversations have gone for a lot longer.
Jessica Smith
01:06:03 PM
How much are the programs?
Um can you take online prerequisite courses? Yes, you can take courses online Community College 4 year institution you name it as long as it is from accredited college or University.
Ethan Skinner
01:06:30 PM
When I talked to the admin at penn the program was roughly 120K for BSN only
I'm happy your clinical work will be on rotation. Yes, so this is a question from Alex. I'm dressed so yes, with away from the clinicals workout pen is that we've got 7 clinicals you only do one clinical at a time, which is really great, so you start the program this summer, is mostly dedicated to pathophysiology pharmacology social diversity cores into nursing course end your physical assessment lab or you learn how to tell assessment and the foundations of nursing and then in August.
Nicole Holland
01:07:18 PM
120k for BSN? holy hell
You will start your OB clinical and you'll do 5 weeks of Obi about 12 to 16 hours a week depends on the clinical followed by 5 weeks of sick mental health and then followed by 6 weeks of Pediatrics. After the winter break, you come back will do 7 weeks of Med Surg followed by 7 weeks of Gerontology, both hospital based as well.
Have a little break after spring semester ends and then you come back and you do your community health clinical that one is a variety of different options, but you basically do almost 200 hours of clinical over 2 weeks 6 weeks 9 weeks. We have a variety of different options for community and then the last semester of your BSN you actually get to request where you want to spend those last 14 weeks. It'll be 212 hour shifts and you'll be on one site for the full semester, so you really get to know that.
Or whether it's meant search Gero specific oncology labor and delivery ICU stepdown. ER you will be a list of options that you can choose from. Not all specialties. Not all fields will be available for that last semester, but it will be something available.
Is it possible for students to work as orange part time per diem? While in the MSN portion of the program?
Uhm yes for sure depends on the special team and with free in anesthesia. You could not work. But all the other specialties. You can work part time well actually there per DM you can do it in all of the Masters programs.
Yeah, so if you're going to be able to do you know once a week twice a week pick your schedule? I think you can definitely pull it ouf you can also work part time and go to school.
Full time for the most part depends on the specialty subspecialties. There's going to be a semester where you might go part time part time, but yes.
If you took a summer course non not for credit do you need to submit those transcripts as well? Yes. Yes, we do need all college transcript so if you took an art class in the Community College over the summer. You want to send that to us because I for some reason, it's on your undergraduate transcript. We're going to look for it. It's going to make your app incomplete and then you're going to have required request. It you I don't have a copy of it at home. You can just upload a copy so you definitely want to make sure you include all transcripts.
Even for classes that you took that have no bearing to health care nursing whatsoever. We still want to see those transcripts.
OK, so I already have a BSN from another universities are special requirement to apply for the MSN encyc co-ops, Leanne Green. Please note you can apply directly to our Masters program so the application is open right now. The deadline to apply's November, 1st if you wanna go full time. It's November, 1st if you want to start in this spring and summer. It's November, 1st and if you want to start next fall part time. I think you can apply in January but you can actually find.
Right now because you have your BSN.
You do not apply to the accelerated program because you have your BSN and you're probably a licensed RN so it doesn't make sense to flex the accelerated program. The MSN can be part time. Still, working as a part time. RN will be possible. Yes, definitely part time. RN part time school is definitely doable full time work.
Part time full is doable as well, but it depends on the specialty in the floor that you're working on and the flexibility that you're given so those are conversations. You have individually with your program director. You figure out a planet study. You work with your employer manager and just make sure it all works out, depending on the floor that you're on if they're not going to accommodate certain schedule requirements, it can be diff.
So Ashley asks I'm in the process of finishing on my prerequisites for the program. I enrolled for this upcoming fall for AP one Kim wanted stats.
Rosmery Rodriguez
01:11:26 PM
Could you give us an idea of the MSN part-time plan of study? Would it be possible to commute for MSN courses?
Uhm I wouldn't wait till next October to apply. I would go ahead and apply for this October. You're going to have 1/2 the Prereqs completed by the end of the fall. You just want to make sure the minute you have final grades. You email us and let us know. Specifically, me, but email me and then you're also going to email admissions at nursing, but you want to email us and let us know like. Hey, just finished the class is these are my grades 'cause we're going to need those.
Um so Jasmine S are there merit based financial aid options opportunities. Yes, we definitely have a merit based a pen even if you get the merit based scholarship. It's not full funding for the program so there are some lungs, but we will take any outside scholarships grants.
And finding that you receive outside of Penn as well to supplement.
Next question is the accelerated program attract students with non nursing degrees, but then the Admissions Committee pays attention to healthcare exposure. So is there any advice you can give to students who do not have a ton of healthcare experience? Well, you're going into a nursing field so we want to know that you've taken the time to explore that as a career option. We have students. All of our students come from dance backgrounds. English degrees engineering accounting business marketing site bio.
Annie Mukurazita
01:12:35 PM
Thank you for holding this session it's very informative. 1. Can you substitute Intro to Biology for a general science course?
Jessica Porter
01:12:36 PM
is there an admissions and/or financial aid advisor we can talk to to explore all financial aid options and be sure we've got eveyrthing we need to come into the program successfully.
All of the other Sciences out their psychology, you name. It there coming in, but you definitely need to show the admissions committee that this isn't just based off of a website research like that. You've taken the time you've met a nurse. You spoken to nurses. You understand the good. The bad and the ugly of being in this field and the intensity of working with really sick patient and then it's a good fit for you, because there's a lot of health care careers out there that you can go into why is nursing right?
Right why is it the right fit for you so that's why we want healthcare exposure so even students who are biology degree majors.
They're kind of within the healthcare field. They're kind of within the science world. But if they don't have a lot of exposure that doesn't help them.
Yeah, great question with AP test scores fulfill any of the prerequisite courses. Yes, so AP bio UH-5 and bio. A5 and stats will definitely meet the biology and statistics statistics requirement and I think of finding camel meat. The chemistry requirement, but please email me. If you if you're worried about Pam bio and stats at a 5 weeks, the requirement.
Um so Ashley asked about statistics if you took statistics within the last 10 years do not retakes that's perfectly fine.
Some schools do require a minimum of 5 years in our website up to look at it again to make sure it doesn't say 5 for stacks, but you're fine, I would take statistics.
Uhm I gotta be minus in microbiology do you recommend taking this course it's a hard question to answer because it really depends where you a full time student when you took this course. You know what's your major there's a variety of different things that that can play a part in retaking the class So what I would ask is just feel free to email. This is for Luxmi. Feel free to email me about the B minus in micro and we'll just have a little discussion just include you know when you complete it.
If you are a full time student the time and what your major was.
Lillian Smith
01:14:41 PM
If I plan to start taking the prerequisites this fall, will I still be able to apply to the program to start in 2020?
Oluyinka Adelegan
01:15:05 PM
Pardon me, I'm a bit confused, I am not a current student of Penn Nursing, does that mean I cannot apply for the BSN-PhD (Hillman Scholars) directly?
Um doing Aaron asked do students need to find their own clinical placements for the MSN portion of the program. No, we find every single clinical site location and placement for the BSN and the MSN which is a huge, huge, huge plus 'cause. It's really hard to find QuickBooks sites and we know because we have our time so I can't even imagine as a student how hard it would be Masa asks for the video interview do you suggest we create a brief response addresses?
Jazmin Cornish
01:15:13 PM
In regards to the statistics requirements, I have completed a Social Statistics course in undergrad, will that be sufficient.
All the questions or should we record. The answer to each question separately. No, you're going to record the answer. You're going to report your response that answers all the questions because you're only recording one time. Unfortunately, this video interview product that we're using doesn't allow you to to answer each question individually so you have to answer it as a as a whole.
Jessica Smith
01:15:51 PM
@Ethan thanks
Are you able to share the mission statistics for the BFN program? How many do you receive in our accepted? We don't do it by program so we have 600 overall applications to BSN second degree. BSN MSN BSN home in and of the 600 about 30% are accepted into our accelerated program.
So about 180 and it's usually a 5050 split.
Even application numbers pretty close. Sometimes it's 4555 but it's about a 5050 split and that it turns out to be about the same in the classroom. It turns out to be about the same as your invented as well, 50% RV SNMSN and the other 50% or second degree BSN home.
Does you can have any education opportunities of tela health that is a great question. I know that we're doing some interdisciplinary research with engineering looking at different apps for technology and how that could be incorporated into health care. I don't know if you've gotten to the tele health definitely talk about it a little bit in the program. But I don't think you're going to have.
Like Clinicals in that experience in that environment.
If you start an application of the X men can you switch to BSN MSN? Yes, definitely so time if you start the app you just go back to the program option and you can change your program.
As long as this is before you submit it once you submit you can't change it. But if you haven't submitted to just go back to the program page and pick the BSN MSN.
What is the program's password for N clex after the BSN OK so after that BS then? It's in the hind mid to high 90s for our accelerated second degree students. I would say.
Probably 94 to 5 if not higher pass with with the first example, taking it as a first time test taker's or anybody pass rate is higher accelerated students are extremely.
Ann McKeon
01:17:47 PM
I see you require biology how far back can you have taken that to be applicable?
Just hard dedicated hardware game and they're really prepared for that exam at the Masters level. We have some specialties where it's 100% pass rate so like FM pizza 100%. I think it's gotten Gerald primary care is 100%. I wanted to say we're in the high 90s, but I don't know them. For every single program so if you have like a specific.
Specialty that you're worried about feel free to email me. I'll find out for you. But in general were in the high 90s for the master students as well.
And the next question is asked questions.
OK So what is your day to day going to look like uhm? What classes only be lecture on specific days in Clinicals on other days.
This is the thing up the schedule changes every semester and sometimes within the semesters. You have to be flexible so in this summer. It's mostly Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 5:00, nine to 1095. Maybe 6:50 it can change, but it's everyday 40 hours a week lecture lab component.
In the summer after that, it's clinical so most of our lecture days are Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays and most of our clinical days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. But that's not guaranteed and it's not every semester and it's not for every clinical So what I usually tell students is you want to prepare for 12 to 16 hours a week of clinical 4:00 to 5:00 hours a week of simulation lab and.
Nico Copeland
01:19:19 PM
Earlier you mentioned that the A&P grades should be strong and that if they have not been complete yet, as long as they are completed by the end of this fall we can send in those grades. Is it acceptable if the A&P course that will be completed this fall is only A&P I and complete the A&P II course after Dec? Or do you prefer to see grades for both of those classes by the end of this fall?
6:00 to 9:00 hours a week of lecture for each clinical urine.
I'm sorry, 9 to 12 hours a week of lashes for each clinical urine and then you're usually in another lecture course, so it's about 15 hours if not more of lecture time and it can change it. It can vary in every 5 weeks. We can move so like in the fall semester. The first five weeks. It could be 2 six in Fridays for 6 hours a day. Then, for site. It could be on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 6 hours a day and then for pieds. It could be 112 hour shift on a Saturday so just you have to be flexible to accelerated program.
You'll have an idea but it's not the same every single week, every single so.
I I participated in to study abroad programs.
But it didn't consider ***** grades my undergraduate career reflects 6 Masters in May.
We actually would reflect we would actually would.
Include your study abroad grades if we have access to those final grades. Yes, and you may want to even just do it yourself. Calculate them put them in there and then just add an addendum to your resume that says the GPA on your transcript does not reflect the 2:00 semesters abroad and that that's why the GPA is different on the application versus your your GPS application.
Is there going to open house? Yes. There is definitely an open house? We are going to have an open house on Saturday, October 6th or 5th I apologize. I can't remember going to see if I can pull it up real quick on my calendar.
But it's going to be October 5th Saturday. October 5th from about 9:00 to one 9:00 to 12:00 and it's a great opportunity to learn about our Masters programs. 'cause you can actually sit in on any some of the faculty. We do not recommend you work, a real part time job while you're in the AB stand portion.
You can work 5:00 to 8:00 hours a week very, very minimal flexible job is what you need so whether it's working in research. Faculty, if you're able to do a premium schedule. Maybe your CNA and you can pick the days that you work, and you only work the days that you can babysitting nannying. Those types of jobs that where you can have flexibility. That's the kind of job. You need you are not going to be able to work 25, three hours a week.
Rosmery Rodriguez
01:21:52 PM
thank youuu!!!
All right, So what does the tuition look like for the BSN to MSN pro program so errands so the BSN portion of the program so the first 18 months is roughly 100 and $22,000 for the BSN the MSN can vary depending on the specialty that you've chosen a 12 month MSN program. I believe is about 57,000 tuition tuition and fees not remembered tuition and fees.
Um do you have an ADN to BSN program? We do have an ADN to BSN program you would actually apply to our accelerated. BSN second degree program. This is for anyone with an Associates Degree or diploma degree and is a registered nurse has a license as an RN you can apply to our BSN program for second degree.
OK, I answered the tuition, UM in the application, there is a section that says office verification code. You don't have to use the office verification code that is for anyone who needs to request a fee waiver for financial reasons. If you have financial constraints and the application fees hardship. You can email me directly and request a fee waiver and.
I can get it try to get it approved and that's when you would use that verification code.
We're also we also do fee waivers for our open house. Let me make sure that accelerated students are eligible for that because historically we have not been eligible for that, so let me find out.
OK so for people like me.
Who are we taking certain courses? Do you take the average of all the grades of the repeated courses or do you only consider the best grade of the class Ricky? We look at it there so we will look at you know when we're reading. Our notes will say applicant a completed anatomy and Physiology. Let's say for a C Class 5 years ago, retook the class has aids like we will note that the transition will note the improvement in the class all of those things and we do take the best grade.
What is the funding like for the MSN portion great questions so the MSN program you are considered a graduate student so you're eligible for graduate plus loan. There are some grant based there are some grants available. But the grant is more minimal at the MSN level anywhere from zero to 10,000 dollars for the Masters and then the rest is loan, but you're eligible for those federal loans graduate plus loans and then because students can take some courses in the BSN. They get to save a little bit of money.
So taking 3 graduate courses in the bachelors can save you up to $15,000 in tuition.
Uhm but it's more loan heavy as well at the Masters level. You're just eligible for graduate plus loan an because students can work full time part time in a combination of different things. They have a little bit more flexibility.
I want so I'm only asking you take the prerequisites online. You can take the Prereqs on line as long as it's from an accredited college or University.
Emily Krause
01:25:14 PM
Thank you so much!!
If you get into the BSN MSN and decide you want to apply for the DMP is it possible to do that. And this better possibility, receiving aid for the tamping great passion. So yes, we are working on it right now, I don't have the details right now.
If you're doing the postmasters DMP, which means I'm going to finish my Masters as a nurse practitioner and family and then I want to do the DMP. Currently, the postmasters. DMP does not happening financial aid available right now.
If you're talking about the DMP for nursing. This tije there is financial aid available and you can switch you would have to apply to the DMP through some matriculation to nurse synaesthesia and then that would dropping from the MSN component and Go PSMDMP for anesthesia only just for the NC show program.
If you scored on the 60th percentile in the jury and got a 3.5 on the writing is it better to wait for Jerry.
Jazmin Cornish
01:25:59 PM
I have a question regarding a retaking an anatomy and biology course, I recently retook anatomy and physiology I lecture only. During my freshman year of undergrad I took Anatomy and Physiology 1 and received a C- in the lecture portion, and either a B or B- in the lab portion. Is it necessary to retake the lab portion if the grade was a C or higher
Tanya Monahemi
01:26:07 PM
I, unfortunately, have to get back to work. I know you mentioned that you will be sending out a recording of this webinar. I am hoping it includes the Q&A portion as well. Thank you so much, Filomena for hosting this very informative webinar.
I would say I would say Samantha Jerrys Uhm.
I will teach them at the jury is just because it shows that you've taken the exam. We've done well. The writing is funky because we had students in the past, but they'll take the jerrys twice and we'll go from a 3.5 to like a 5.5. So we know that it can be kind of a fluke. So I would go ahead and submit the jury since you take him on.
Uh I'm applying to study a bra. I'm applying to study abroad programs like Fulbright congratulations. That's awesome. If you get accepted to the program and study abroad would you be able to so let's say you apply to our accelerator program now you want to start fall summer 2020 get it. You receive a Fulbright. You can request a deferment of one year. So you can have Admissions Department of one year. Or maybe there's 2 year full right. You could do 2 years and we've had students in the past do that, so we will we will approve.
In admissions to firm it up.
Anyone can request an admissions deferment of up to one year with very little paperwork proof. If you went out to 2 years. It has to be for military reasons medical reasons or that. You've received you know like a Fulbright wrote scholars things like that.
Um we talked about how much the programs are.
I know it sounds really, really high were trying really, really hard to find additional funding and scholarships. Please also look for outside scholarships were always looking to make it more reasonable and more manageable as well.
Or Rosemary asks can you give us an idea of the MSN part implant study really, really, really depends on the specialty you can definitely commute for the MSN courses now.
Depends where you're commuting from your comedian with the Philadelphia which falls general. You're fine. We pack students commuted from New York. DC Maryland, sometimes sometimes Virginia. That's a little far, but it really, really, really New Jersey, but it really, really depends on the specialty that you've chosen and if we can find the clinical site in those states, so I can find you a clinical site in that state then it's perfectly fine.
Ah let's see next question is, you guys have an awesome questions. Thank you.
Yeah, Jessica ask is there a way I skip the question.
Can you substitute into bio for a general science course? Yes. So so if you took?
If you took a genetics course cell bio course. Such an album molecular bio course you can have that count for your into bio requirement. We definitely have a financial aid advisor. You can talk to one students are admitted into the program. Almost every single applicant was admitted has a one on one with our financially to go through the process process the one thing about pen.
If you don't have to deposit. You don't have to decide to come dependent ill. You know the financial implications for you personally is it's different. For every single person that comes into the program and you'll have the time to discuss that with the financially person.
Um if you're take planning on taking prereqs this fall. I still be so if you're taking prerequisite courses this fall. You can still apply to start in June of 2020, assuming and complete all the prereqs by the start of the program, which is June of 2020, so make sure you map it out. And if you're able to complete all the prereqs by May 31st of 2020. You can apply right now for for next summer.
Um so occurrence, I'm not in current Penn Nursing does that mean I could not apply for the BSN. No, not at all, so you gotta ask the Hillman Scholars program is actually for both we offer one option for current Penn students to apply to the home involved are here in the BSN. But we also offer an opportunity for students to apply directly to the accelerated program directly into the BSN and PhD fewer. Hillman scholars and admitted you immediately start. PH D coursework in your BSN program so you can apply to the PhD program.

Does a bio from high school program count as pre req or does it need to be a college level
Um so for biology, we require biology bioline can, we go back pretty far so you can always email me, but I would say over 10 years. Sometimes, 15 to 20 depends when you took it great, about that whole thing biology will go pretty far back.
OK, so earlier, I mentioned that ATP grades should be strong and then if they're not if they haven't been completed. Yet just make sure that completed you wanted to treat all your prereqs are completed by the end of this may 31st 2020. Amp are really important courses for us.
So if you're able to complete them before the end of the fall. It does help your application 'cause. We're going to have your AP 1:00 and 2:00. If you only have part one and Part 2. That's perfectly fine like I said over 50% of our students have to take something in the fall and that includes anatomy and Physiology will just going to look at everything else as well so.
If the amp course that will be completed this fall is only in P1 and you're completing part 2. That's perfectly fine.
I would do I would complete the courses in?
I will complete them so that I would do the best in them, so if that means separating part. One and Part 2 and 2 semesters. That's what I would do it's not gonna hurt you as long as we have rates for one of them and like I said, You know if you have a lot of science courses. AP becomes less important if you don't have as many AP becomes more important.
Alright so I have a question about retaking anatomy course.
Anatomy biology course, OK, so you recently took anatomy and Physiology. One you took anatomy, Physiology want to receive AC minus.

Do you have any recommendations for where to apply for external graduate scholarships???
A great crashing so if you're retaking the course. You don't have to necessarily retake the lab if your lab grade is separate so it's on your transcript that says anatomy Physiology lecture 3 credits. Anatomy Physiology lab. One credit and you have a C or higher in the lab you do not have to retake the lab.
China you're welcome, yes, and hopefully I've been reading the questions so hopefully when you guys listen to this back, you'll be able to hear my responses.

How long does it take for admissions to notify potential students about acceptance/rejection?
Does a bio from high school program counters prereq or does it need to be caused the biology course must be college level. The only thing we will accept is an AP bio exam score of 5 for credit. We will not take high school credit now.
If you took biology at a Community College why you were in high school and you can get a Community College transcript to us. We will take the bio from Community College.
You know how sometimes you can be dual enrolled in high school with the local college so do you have any recommendations for women apply for external graduate scholarships and we actually have on our on our website we have under financially external scholarships, there's hundreds of them.
Hundreds of that, So what I would probably do is just spend a couple of minutes everyday maybe 5:00 to 10:00 that don't. You can't do this all at one time and maybe 5 to 10 minutes every day. Just going in and just seeing what you can find their scholarships for based on where you live city, County state.
Educational background there's just so many and but our website has a listing of a lot of them so definitely check that out.
How long does it take for admissions to notify potential students about acceptance and rejection everyone will be notified at the exact same time, 1st week of February. That's when all decisions will be posted. I'm gonna try really hard to move it up a little bit, but I don't think I'm going to be able to but right now first week of February. Decisions will be posted everyone gets notified at the same time decisions are posts, it the applicant portal page.
